How Muse were inspired by "The Prisoner" - a TV show from the 1960s

"Hullaballoo, the front cover, we were trying to do a mockup of "The Prisoner", it's like kind of, some geezer - I think he's a secret agent, who's retired, and obviously because he's got loads of information about the government - he just suddenly wakes up one day, and he's in a strange surreal town that he's stuck in and everyone refers to him as a number, and doesn't use his name, and he can't escape. Every time he tries to escape, large white balloons chase him down a beach." (Matthew)

"Stairway To Devon" intro

Twilight Zone music plays

"You are travelling through another dimension. A dimension not only of sight and sound, but of mind. A journey into a wondrous land, whose boundaries are that of imagination. That's the signpost up ahead. Your next stop; the mind-bending world of Muse"

"You are about to meet a man, mid twenties, black hair. He could almost pass for normal. But take a closer look, that's Matt Bellamy; singer, guitarist, pianist, and the principal character of our story.
He is not alone.
Witness fellow stargazers, Dominic Howard (drums), and that's Chris Wolstenholme, (the big fella, he plays bass guitar). Together they have written the soundtrack to the end of the world"

100 most influential drummers of all time - Dominic Howard

MUSIC RADAR - 3RD MAY 2011

Dominic Howard

b. 07.12.1977
Nationality: British
Genre: rock

Without Howard’s supermassive beats, Muse would be as inconsequential as a puff of space dust. The 31-year-old wizard is the rock ‘n’ roll substance to Matt Bellamy’s operatic whimsy; an out-of-this world technician who plays with a human passion, and a real beacon of pedigree amongst his hit ‘n’ hope peers.

Essential downloads:

Muse: Assassin; New Born; Apocalypse Please; Butterflies And Hurricanes; Stockholm Syndrome

100 most influential drummers of all time - Joey Jordison

Joey Jordison

b. 26.04.1975
Nationality: American
Genre: heavy metal

You wouldn’t want to find him hiding in your wardrobe, but the scariest thing about Jordison is the brutal double kick work that has elevated his band from pantomime villains to metal overlords since 1999’s Slipknot. He is the face, hands and feet of modern metal. No wonder he’s #1.

Essential downloads:

Slipknot: Surfacing; Opium Of The People; The Blister Exists; Duality; Danger - Keep Away

Joey the violinist

"I want to learn to play the violin— no joke. Because it seems very difficult, and I’ve never played a stringed instrument besides guitar. In the future, when I get a break, I really want to sit down with a teacher and learn how to play. My (non-Slipknot/ Murderdolls) solo stuff is not necessarily that heavy, and at one point I thought, Man, if I could study the violin, this could really be good."

(Joey Jordison, Interview with "Modern Drummer Magazine" 2011)

"The thing that makes Slipknot Slipknot is the three drummers"

"On the first record the drums were more raw-sounding," Joey explains. "On Iowa they're punchier, and there's more technical excellence. I had to use a lot more intricate patterns—and not just do the fast stuff. But if I played a fast part, I made it almost twice as fast and sometimes twice as long."
Then there's the way he interlocks with cohorts Chris and Shawn. On scathing statements like "Skin Ticket," "Gently," "Metabolic," and the expansive finale, "Iowa," it's painfully clear that this percussion team is no overnight creation. "You know how hard it is to play the same beat with another drummer?" Joey asks rhetorically. "It often sounds like flams. But we've played together so long, and we've had such long, brutal practices for all those dates of touring in two plus years. It just sank in. Now it's like clockwork. It just flies out of us, and we think as one brain. The thing that makes Slipknot Slipknot is the three drummers. People are like, 'Man, you guys are so heavy!' A lot of that doesn't necessarily come from the riffs we write, but from all the drums."

(ALL JAPAN) Dressing Room

Weekly Pro
11th February 1986 (Issue no.130)

...Jumbo Tsuruta's alma mater, Yamanashi Prefectural Hikawa High School, is one of the prefecture's top schools for academics and sports. Mariko Hayashi, the Naoki Prize-winning author who is currently making headlines, is also an alumna of the same school. Tsuruta was devastated by the group shoplifting incident involving some of the juniors. "Good things don't last forever, do they?" he said, his expression gloomy.

...The final stages of the Hokkaido series only have two matches, on the 4th in Otaru and the 5th in Sapporo, but the fact that they'll be staying in Sapporo for four nights starting on the 2nd is a major draw for the wrestlers. With the Sapporo Snow Festival just around the corner, they're practically humming, "The sake tastes great!" However, this comes with the caveat that they don't mind the cold. The main wrestlers, including Giant Baba, Jumbo Tsuruta, Tenryu, and Tiger Mask, have a Setsubun bean-throwing ceremony scheduled for the 3rd, and as usual, Mr. Oisoga's* day off isn't really a day off. In any case, he seems to be in a good mood in Sapporo for the winter tour.

...On January 20th, during the off-season, the Pro Sports Awards ceremony was held at the Ryogoku Kokugikan Grand Hall from 6 PM. The All Japan Pro Wrestling recipients were Great Kojika and Tiger Mask. This party, bringing together top stars from various fields, is an incredible gathering and attracts the attention of fans every year. Kojika happily commented, "When you've been doing this for so many years, all sorts of things happen. It's a great honor."

Notes
The Naoki Prize: Japan's highest-ranking literary award
Mr Oisoga: From what I can tell this was a grumpy bus driver (ironically, Noah have a "Mr Orange").

"Gothic Plague"

DOMINIC: I remember like being at school and definitely seeing some like jazz band come in and play at the school. I remember being really impressed and enthralled with the drummer, and just like staring at the drummer and thinking it was just like so cool, you know. I was like, 'Wow, maybe I should learn the drums'. But you know, it was also around the same kind of time that we started the band because none of us were really any kind of serious musicians before we actually got in the band. We were literally like four friends hanging around, and we were like 'Let's start a band. I'll play the drums. You play the guitar. You play the bass, and you can sing', so and then we literally just got in a room, no one knew how to play their instruments, and it was all like terrible, it sounded awful I imagine. So, we very much just learnt our instruments just by playing together and you know, I guess just wanting to be in a band and playing music.
Q: Was this the band already with Matthew? Or was it pre Matthew?
DOMINIC: This was pre Matthew. The first band I started was "Gothic Plague", which was with a bunch of other friends, but then our guitarist ended up leaving or I kicked him out I think, and I then got Matt in 'cos I knew he was good on the guitar. I didn't really know him at school too well. I knew of him, but I knew he was a good musician for his age.

Muse - New Born

"DIFFICULT second album? No such thing for Muse as this second cut from the forthcoming Origins of Symmetry keeps true to the thrashing rock sounds they're known for. Anyone who caught them trashing the stage on CD:UK at the weekend will agree."
