If the album carries on as it has, do you think it has a chance of being the best Muse album ever?

Let's say the remaining six songs go like this: one song as good as Cryogen, one as good as Hexagons, one as good as Be With You, and one as good as Unravelling, and the remaining two songs middle of the road (by old Muse standards). Do you think there would be a chance that this will end up being their best album?

I really think so. Cryogen for me is genuinely on the same level as their other similar songs from the past, i.e Plug in Baby and Bliss, and Hexagons is... just something else; genuinely up their as one the very best songs they've ever made. Unravelling is great and Be With You is fine. If the rest of the album is more of that, then 100% it will be jostling for my very favourite.

Question about Vinyl edition for The Wow! Signal

I set up my new record player to play the remastered Beatles Vinyls and have noticed significant richness in the sound and dynamic range of the stereo with different instruments coming from different speakers.

I bought the 2nd Law on vinyl 7 years ago and only just found it still sounded compressed like downloaded music.

My question is, given I’ve already ordered the vinyl edition, will The Wow! Signal be the same or will its production of sound be tangibly different from digital formats and more like the modern day productions of classic bands that many music stores sell now?

I want to know because I’d rather not be disappointed when I play it the first time.

Starting my Muse journey as a Gen Z fan

I’m a fan who is unfortunately too young to have witnessed the band’s rise firsthand, but I want to share with you how I experienced the Muse-universe so far.

I know about Muse since a few years now, it started of course with Twilight and SBMH. But the first time it really clicked was in January this year, when Apple Music suddenly played Compliance while I was at work (yes sue me that I fell for this one).

I started to listen to their entire discography and was blown away by Plug in Baby, Supremacy and Hysteria. From that on, I’ve entered the rabbit hole. It’s almost cringe to admit but I’ve primarily downloaded Reddit just because I wanted to be part of this community. I’ve binge watched YouTube videos of their live shows and interviews, spend hours scrolling through Musewiki, even frickin started to play electric guitar so that I can learn all the songs.

During my time in this subreddit, I also encountered all the negativity surrounding their recent albums. Personally I can understand some parts of the rant, but I think it’s just natural that people change over the years and so does their work. I’m really glad that they still produce music and that I’ll likely be able to even see them performing live, I can’t wait for them to announce the UK/EU tour.

Sadly almost none of my friends really know them, and I kinda blame my parents for their missed opportunity of following the band right from the beginning :’)

I really look forward to the new album, maybe I was a little bit influenced by all the hype around here as well (I love all of the new singles anyway), so I assume that TW!S will be absolutely epic. Muse is the first band of which I truly consider myself a genuine fan, so this whole album-release-thing is quite new for me.

Thanks for listening to my Ted talk.

This is why Hexagons is a landmark song by Muse

With Hexagons, Muse successfully bridges the gap between the band's two major periods, something that hadn't happened so naturally since The 2nd Law.

The difference with many post-2012 albums is that Hexagons doesn't sound like a collage of ideas: the track recaptures the melancholy and "cosmic" feel of early Muse while retaining the production power of modern Muse.

Where recent albums often abruptly separated styles, I find that Hexagons finally fuses them seamlessly.

For example, the progressive 6/4 time signature is typical of the creative ideas of OOS or Absolution,

And there are the big, heavily saturated synths reminiscent of Simulation Theory or 2nd Law.

For me, this is the first Muse track to perfectly reconcile fans of the first era (Showbiz to Resistance) and fans of the second (The 2nd Law to WOTP).

This is quite a historic moment because I feel that with The Wow! Signal, Muse has found its ultimate musical evolution. The original and the new formula together, improved.

Will we get a piano-heavy song on The Wow! Signal?

Obviously we’ve not heard the piano yet, although I’m still obsessed with the organ section in BWY! Do you think we’ll get one? I have a feeling Space Debris might be a Ruled by Secrecy type ending to the album…

Sickness -> Unravelling

Wouldn’t it be really cool if The Sickness In You & I ended with Unravelling’s live synth intro which then segues right into Unravelling? Idk how likely it is but it would be a clever way for them to take our criticism of not including the intro in the studio single. Thoughts?

What song does your music app choose after Hexagons?

After you listen to Hexagons, what song does your music app recommend next?

Spotify just played Showbiz - well fucking done, actually. Nailed it.

Album Recommendations for a EDM fan

I've always been a very passive enjoyer of Muse (Madness and Uprising are probably the only songs I could name, but I loved the work on Zedd's Telos and the recent singles from "The Wow! Signal")... I'm a big EDM-head and I feel like Muse's music often crosses into that territory... does anyone have a good starter album/project that I should listen to based on that? It doesn't even need to be electronic-leaning (like, good music is good music) but I had a feeling there might be something in that territory (so any kind of recommendation is welcomed!)

Hexagons should get a single art that’s just The Resistance + Wow! Signal

Unfortunately I have the artistic skills of a pre schooler and wouldn’t even dare attempting this but:

Imagine the Resistance album cover, but the Hexagons are transparent with red outlines and the little dude at the bottom is on his knees instead of standing up, looking ahead to the space croissant and red laser with Europa above instead of Earth. Maybe even the bridge/surface he’s on is cracking or collapsing.

Could have a tagline at the bottom “Our resistance is mass produced”. The idea being that it’s like a corrupted or distorted version of the Resistance art.

Sorry I know this is random. I just think it’d be cool.

A Few Questions For You...

  1. Can we now say this is most psyched and hyped the fan base has been since pre-Drones? Or is that recency bias? I am feeling things towards them I haven't in a long time personally...

  2. Do we think "Hexagons" will get a proper MV too? Be performed live soon? Following a similar pattern to the " Cryogen" rollout? They seemed to act on the positive reaction to that one...so if they're checking in here (Dom, HELLO! 😏) and elsewhere, they'll see peak reaction from the last decade for this... What would you like the MV to look like? Has to be spacey, surely? The treasure hunt etc tell me, this song is important to them.

  3. Every song on WOTP had either a MV/Visualiser/Live Performance Video. In recent years they've really recognised the importance of the visual aspect as YouTube's prominance has risen. Do you think we'll get a visual element for the whole album? Maybe even a film that lasts the length of the record? Would you like that? The video directors mentioned "a film"...

  4. It's tough to wait...can you? Do you want another single pre album? I think it's 50/50...Either another single week of album or on release day... I think, matter what, I'm gonna wait now...I agree, half the album ahead would take a little freshness away...however, we are in a singles dominate (for reaction and tone setting) market over albums these days ...so it's possible they will...

  5. What in June would you like to see the band doing to promote this LP? Zane Lowe? Jools Holland? Lots of press interviews in music mags/online publications and channels? Album launch live show like they used to do? Where should they go? Anything more unique like the treasure hunt? I'd love them to build on the atmospheric clip monologues pre BWY ...

  6. I really loved the acoustic version of Unravelling and hoped they might decide to do an alt version of other tracks (or all!) I really loved ST alternate reality tracks and hoped they'd bring that back for this since the tracks are loud and heavy and some would work well with stripped/Alt mixes...

Who's for that?

Favorite non-Muse-y Muse song of all time

With all the hype around all the new Muse songs being dropped, I’ve taken another deep dive through the entire discography. As we know, there are tracks that sound a lot Muse-y-er than others. That made me curious what everyone’s favorite Muse song is that doesn’t sound like traditional “Muse”?

Liquid State on The 2nd Law is my answer. Obviously having Chris on the mic decreases the Muse-ness inherently. But I also feel like the song writing really is a departure from the formula (also due to Chris primarily being the writer). Honestly I would absolutely soak up an entire album of music written and sung by Chris.

So what does everyone think? What’s your favorite?

"Looking like The Backstreet Boys"

"We kind of said lets get the suits in, and you know you turn up on the day and there's like these kind of circus Jester suits. I mean, hey, what can you do? It's too late. All the shops are shut. You know we turn up at 5.00, it's too late to turn back. What are you going to do? whinge or just put 'em on, looking like The Backstreet Boys?" (Matthew)

I bet Nick Mason would love Hexagons

I love LOVE Hexagons. And the first thing I thought when I heard it was HOLY PINK FLOYD, kids! I realized after several more listens that yes, Matt has a David Gilmore-esque tone in his guitar in the intro portion, but it’s really Dom’s drums that brought me to a Floyd place. I specifically heard Time from Dark Side of the Moon, appropriately. Dom’s fills are super similar to Nick’s, and the tones of the tom toms are also almost identical. I’ve been a huge Muse fan for well over 20 years, and a Floyd fan for 40, so I’m a very happy girl! I feel like I read something a few years back, maybe here, that they had discovered Pink Floyd rather recently, but I may be misremembering.
