Spent $100K of my own money to build a working clean-energy prototype. Now I’m stuck in the classic TRL 4-5 hardware wall. How would you break the loop?

I’m a technical founder in Canada with a background in fuel cells. Over the last while, I’ve been developing a quiet, clean, zero-maintenance liquid-fuel power unit (<5kW) meant to replace traditional gas and diesel generators for remote backup and off-grid power.

I’ve bootstrapped $100K of my own money into this so far. That got us to a TRL 4–5 prototype, a working lab prototype, solid bench test data, and foundational IP.

Here’s the setup:

  • How it works: It’s a clean CHP system running on liquid methanol/water mix. It produces electricity and captures high-efficiency waste heat with no mechanical moving parts and no toxic emissions (just water vapor and CO2).
  • Where I’m stuck: The lab prototype proves the physics, but it’s still a bench unit. Risk-averse B2B buyers (like remote telecom or industrial sites) want to see a rugged, field-tested machine before signing off. On the flip side, going after C-end consumers would mean completely redefining the product.
  • What’s needed for TRL 6: I’ve finalized the system architecture and lined up key suppliers for a field-ready engineering unit. But to actually build it and test it in the wild, I need about $100K–$200K in additional capital, access to test setups, and a tiny team of 2–3 engineers.

I’d love your raw advice or outside-the-box ideas:

Honestly, I’m looking for any creative workarounds to bridge this gap. If you were in my shoes with a proven lab unit and a solid supply chain lined up, how would you break the "chicken-and-egg" loop with early B2B pilots? Are there unexpected early markets I should be looking at instead of long-cycle industrial accounts? And how would you creatively piece together that missing $100K–$200K, test rigs, and engineering support without getting bogged down in slow, traditional grant cycles?
