Career switch at 40. What do I do?

Hello, people... Could use some guidance here.

For the last 15 years, I have worked for only ONE company. It was a low-skill language based editorial job, but...

-Really good pay, 15-20 lpa
-Remote work
-Full flexibility

Last year, I got terminated and I realized... I am pretty much unemployable. I have learned no other life skill. I have been freelancing for similar companies, making some money here and there, but I need to get into a serious career. I am a mechanical engineer by qualification - but can't get into that now. I need to spend a few months to learn a serious skill, something that will get me a somewhat stable career and some good money, a few lakhs a month in say 5-6 years. I am a hard-worker and quick learner, I am ready to put in the hours and learn something, but... what?

What can I invest my time and energy that will give me a fruitful rewarding long-term career? I am thinking AI.

Where do I start? I am really lost.

Work on a Plan B

Fellas, I strongly suggest: start working on a plan B. Instead of sitting and moping around, spend that same time learning a high-value skill. I know this job pays really well. I know how important it is to you. But some of us are in a situation where if we don't get this job, we will be relegated to average-paying jobs. Just imagine how nice it would be if we had several options to have jobs as high-paying as this! That would be great, wouldn't it? And the way I am achieving that is by learning a high-value skill. I am investing time to learn either cybersecurity or AI/ML - my mentors will advise me on this. I suggest you guys do the same instead of waiting around. If you get this job, well and good. If you don't, you will get an equally high-paying job anyway with your upgraded skill set. Best of luck!

My observations on what is happening with XAI hiring...

Correct me if I am wrong, but here's what I have noticed so far:

  1. A lot of video and image tutors have been dropped - seems that role has had it's quota met.

  2. Those who have had their offer rescinded - they never got the first background checks email from Cisive. If Cisive has contacted you, then you are safe. If not, then red flag - XAI is having 2nd thoughts about your application and you will be dropped soon.

  3. None of the language tutors have had their offer rescinced. Far as I know, there is heavy demand for language tutors at the moment - lots of projects.

Offer rescinded AFTER background verification?

Did anybody here have their offer rescinded AFTER they submitted their background verification details?

EDIT: No, my offer has not been rescinded. Whoever got their offer rescinded, I have noticed 2 common things:

  1. It's for either video or image tutor
  2. They haven't received the Cisive email for background verification checks

Offer rescinded :-(

At least 2 people here have confirmed that their offer has been rescinded :-(

"Our priorities have shifted" - said the email.

Both were Image Tutors. I have applied for language tutor, wonder what will happen with me. Worried sick.

CISIVE replied, but...

I submitted my details to Cisive on 7th May. On 15th May, they replied saying my address was incomplete. I submitted the missing details... I still haven't been onboarded, when will it happen? :'-(

If not XAI then where? Plan B

My status currently: Got offer letter, background checks in progress. but...

As the saying goes - many a slip between cup and the lip. Nothing is certain until I get onboarded and start working.

Now the question is: In case I don't make it through to XAI, what other good legit company can I apply to? Other than XAI, I find Turing to be legit.

Anyone had experiences with companies like:

-Outlier
-Appen
-Telus
-DataAnnotation.tech
-Mercor
-Alignerr
-Innodata
-Handshake

Any others I missed?

Edit: Outlier seems legit, but they pay a measly $5.5 per hour :-(

XAI - Have faith and optimism, you'll hear from them soon

Hello, everybody. I see quite a few of us are worried about not hearing back from XAI soon. My cousin had an interesting view on this:

Their on-boarding, background checks, all the 3rd party company services they are employing - it all costs them money and they don't go through all this trouble to make you sit around and do nothing. You are an investment and they wanty ROI. So you will hear from them soon, you will get to work.

Meanwhile, have faith, hustlers, just wanted to share something positive to motivate you. You should hear from them soon.

If any of you have any success stories - positive stories about you getting hired and starting work , do tell us

Was supposed to start 11th May, but no confirmation

Indian here. Offer letter received, yay! During on-boarding, I had picked 11th May as my joining date - the earliest. 7th May, I finished all the Cisive procedures, submitted documents and all. 11th May approacheth, but no communication from either Cisive or XAi.

Anyone from India who got hired recently and started working? If you'd share your experience, would be really helpful. I want to understand what's happening. I really wish this whole process had some way of keeping us in the loop as to what exactly is happening.

Will I get enough work hours?

I am based out of India and just got confirmed as an AI Tutor for Hindi.
Can someone please answer the following questions? Thanks in advance.

  1. Will I get enough work hours as a CONTRACTOR?

  2. Is it true that they need a minimum of 20 hours a week?

  3. Is it true that there is in fact an abundance of work and you can work 12+ hours a day if you wish?

  4. I'm from outside the US, so will my work hours will be capped at 40 per week?
