Is this cause for concern?
I’ve put in a 74 gauge string on my 7 string Ibanez with a lo pro edge. When locking the nut, this is about as far as it goes and it looks like it isn’t sitting on the string properly
I recently got an Ibanez RG2027XL which I set up in A# Standard but I’ve been struggling with how bass-y the guitar sounds. I’m playing it through the Neural DSP Misha Mansoor and Gojira plugins but I’m struggling to get a useable tone out of it especially in the lower register.
I have a PRS S2 and Vola 7 string PDM which sound much brighter and pretty good with NDSPs default presets (I.e., minimal tweaks needed), whereas on the Ibanez I need to have a VERY aggressive low cut (120-150Hz) via an eq plugin before the plugin, and another aggressive low cut in the plugin’s global EQ to get a useable tone - this strikes me as very odd.
In the lower register the tones are super boomy. For leads it comes across as “thick” but I’m mainly trying to use it for low tuned death metal stuff so the muddy lower register is my primary concern.
I used to have similar issues with my PRS in the past and the fixed that worked for me was to block the bridge and lower it completely till it sits flat on the body (full contact) - kind of like a decked trem but I have blocks on both sides of the trem sustain block so it doesn’t move at all.
I want to do something similar to the Ibanez (at least deck the trem so it sits flush on the body with maximum contact), but given the recessed routing on the Ibanez this seems a little challenging, and I want to get some advice before I attempt it.
Has anyone dealt with something like this before ? Any advice would be really appreciated
Recent got a 2027RXL, my first locking trem. I swapped out the 9-54 B standard set for a 10-59 set in A# standard. I followed the Ben Eller floyd setup video and after a bit of effort I was ultimately able to get the trem balanced and the guitar in tune. Here are my questions:
The guitar sounds VERY bass-y (I noticed it a bit before but it’s really obvious now) - like neural gojira presets need a VERY sharp low cut to sound usable, especially on the low strings. It’s fine for leads because they sound thick and shreddy but it’s near impossible to get like Plini “Every Piece Matters” lead tone out of it. My Vola with BKPs sounds way more bright (and less boomy). Is this a set up issue or pickup issue? Any fixes that don’t need soldering or replacing pickups
The low string is a 59 A# right now, if I wanted to drop it to G or G# with a 74, would that fit the bridge saddle and tuning peg without too many issues?
Would installing a tremol-no help in doing setups / tunings up? I’m using the Ben eller method of blocking the bridge, getting the strings in turn with each other, unblocking the bridge, getting all strings in tune collectively in tune by adjusting the trem claw, locking the nut, adjusting fine tuners. I’m thinking the tremol-no would be a more reliable way of blocking the bridge than sticking an Allen wrench in there
3 years with the Helix LT, another 7 with a POD HD300 before that. I used to spend hours on tutorials to dial in tones and looking up IRs (OwnHammer; York, GGD etc.).
The artist presets on the NDSP plugins (Misha, Plini, Gojira, Asato) are MILES ahead of anything I’ve ever been able to dial in.
Tone chasing over now we build some chops!
I play mostly metal (Monuments, Bleed From Within, Novelists, Polaris, Gatecreeper, PeelingFlesh, Havok to name a few), and I’m looking to get into some of the ambient noodly stuff like Rabea, Mateus Asato, Ruben Wan etc.
I have a 6 string in D Standard, 7 string in Drop B / Drop B DADGAD, and a new 7 that will end up in either A standard or Drop G#.
Here are my options (need to pick 2, or 3 if REALLY like something when I try it). I need some help in narrowing down the options and would love to hear peoples experiences with these.
Metal Tones - Nameless X (good for really low tunings?) / Gojira (BfW rave about this) / Nolly (I think heard tha Spiritbox used this)
Ambient - Rabea, Asato, Morgan Amps, John Mayer (lots of features/flexibility), Misha (maybe relevant?)
In both cases I’m looking for a better plug and play sort of experience, meaning good inbuilt presets and less time spent dialling in tones or tweaking.
