Society is disabling, not Asperger's

Every other post in this subreddit is about how debilitating life with aspergers is and how everything is just doom and gloom, with the most frequent examples being bullying in school and in the workplace, often times in family settings too.

But what some of us fail to realize is that such difficulties stem from external factors and are not inherent to autism. Society debilitates autistic people. The responsibility and blame for the bullying don't fall on autistic people. If anyone states otherwise, they are victim-blaming.

The debilitating effects don't stop at social exclusion and bullying. Added to and caused by that, there is a disproportionate suicide rate amongst autistic people. Persistent anxiety has also proven to cause and exacerbate chronic gastrointestinal problems that severely impact the quality of life.

Neurotypical society is against life

Autists are actually going extinct, not heading towards a "global epidemic".

The Autism Epidemic rhetoric is not only false, but the complete opposite of what's happening in the world. The autistic share of the population is in fact expected to start shrinking.

Autists are one of the least fertile human populations recorded in history. A 2012 study from Sweden found that the fertility rate for autists born from 1950 to 1970 was ~0.5 for men and ~0.96 for women compared to the national average of ~2.1 for people born in the same time period (just hovering around the replacement level).

Since autism is a conjugation of genetic factors, its continued existence requires the autistic population to reproduce and pass on their genetic patrimony. This, as noted, is not happening. Our future looks grim, but don't lose hope. We can and will turn this around. We will prevail.

NTs don't think about you in the same way you think about them

I've been thinking about this a lot lately, and I came to the realisation that the autistic struggle against NT oppression is one that is one-sided. It's not that allists think of us like a unified antagonizing bloc like we tend to think of them. But rather they don't think of us at all. It became apparent that a greater deal of NTs than I before thought don't even know what autism is to begin with. Their experience with autistic people is limited to "my autistic cousin" or something along those lines. They don't even view us (lvl 1s) as "real autists".

I felt I needed to share this thought with the community because knowing yourself and your place in the world is as if not more important than knowing your enemy. So is knowing in what regard your opponent holds you. With this reflection I don't mean allists view us as their own, but rather that they don't view us at all. This is a reflex of our unimportance and lack of social status in their society.

Porcupine Strategy

As we all know (and came to learn the hard way), Autistic-Allistic relations are all but equal. The allistic majority, *consciously or not*, makes sure their dominance over the autistic neurorype doesn't waiver. They have a free pass to bully us and create conditions to hinder our personal development due to our low social status, which translates to no consequences for their actions whatsoever.

Faced with this desolating predicament, how should we respond? It's actually very intuitive. We have to make bullying/excluding/othering us as costly as possible to neurotypicals. I propose a porcupine-like strategy, which consists in punishing the perpetrator on an individual level within the range of your abilities.

Bolster your fighting skills and, when tested, go all-in on your bullies to set a precedent. If it is legal where you live, buy a firearm for self defense and carry it wherever possible. Buy pepper spray and/or a blade. Even if it isn't legal, no one gives a shit. I've seen countless colleagues of mine carrying knives inside the school perimeter. If you are caught, point out the double standards.

Remember, fellow aspies, we ARE in a position to fight back. We are in the minority, but are still hundreds of millions. Autistic Pride, Autistic Power!

It's funny how they want you to hate yourself but not hate others for exactly the same reasons.

When an autistic person says:

"I hate being autistic, people reject me for no reason, I was bullied and discriminated against, I can't find love, I got fired at work, etc."

People in the comments support this, share the feeling, say that autism sucks, talk about how disabling their symptoms are, etc.

But when an autistic person says:

"I hate NT's, they reject me for no reason, they bully and discriminate against me, they make it impossible to find love, they get me fired at work, etc"

People in the comments will tell OP that they're wrong, that not all NT's are evil, that their feelings are non-valid, that their autism is the actual problem and blah blah blah...

I just want you to imagine how this would go the other way around:

Imagine if an autistic person who vents about their disability gets the type of comments that people share when an autistic person complains about living with NT's.

"No, you can't say that you hate being autistic! Autism is not always something bad! NT's are the actual disability!"

You see the problem, right?

But why does this happen? Both problems are really similar, autism and NT's are a big barrier for the average autistic person's quality of life, so why autistic people are only allowed to hate one but not the other?

This, my friends, is what we call "gaslighting".

It is a typical tactic that oppressors use to make their victims hate themselves but not them, the ones who are in power don't care if the ones who are below them complain.

As long as it doesn't involve them.

This is what white "allies" do all the time, they will allow you to rant about the struggles of being black in a racist society but don't you EVER mention white people, NEVER.

What? You're saying that a lot of struggles of being black involve white people? Don't justify your bigotry!

NT's do exactly the same thing.

They will mention 100 statistics of how the symptoms of autism affects the quality of life of an autistic person if it's necessary to prove that autism sucks, but don't you even DARE to talk about how (for example), autistic women are more likely to experience physical and verbal abuse than allistic women, usually from NT men.

But hey! Don't worry! We NT's are for you guys everytime you need us! If a cure comes out we won't hesitate to give it to ya!

But, uh, if a cure for autism is never found and we are forced to address the obvious issues of power imbalance between NT's and ND's, then... We will... Uh...

Just don't think about it!

The point I'm trying to get across is:

Don't let people tell you what you are allowed to hate or not as long as it causes you suffering.
