NOAA Aircraft Operations Center Opportunities

I recently graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering. I am a co-op at NASA Johnson Space Center, currently on leave and looking to convert to full time at other agencies. I aim to work with aircraft.

Is there a dedicated POC for hiring at the aircraft operations center?

I am very fortunate to have two current offers:

1) KSC Contractor

I would be working to support ground support equipment for Artemis.

I am interested because it:

  1. is with space
  2. is at KSC
  3. involves operations, which is a both a good stepping stone to more technical, design-oriented roles and something that is not typically available in purely analytical roles
  4. is in a location I would be happy living long-term based on my family's needs

2) Boeing Commercial Airplanes

BCA in South Carolina as a Liaison Engineer supporting the 787 program. This role supports production issues with a focus on structural repairs. It has a 1 year training period, rotating through different production teams/phases. After that period, you are placed into final group with Material Review Board authority.

I am interested because it:

  1. has an excellent training program
  2. offers a lot of flexibility in where you ultimately wind up
  3. offers a good foundation to take on other roles in the company (other technical areas or other programs)
  4. offers a chance to improve in a desired area (materials and structures)

My concerns are the following:

  1. Working in space and as a civil servant

I would like to work in space, eventually as a civil servant. The contractor role would keep me in space and at KSC. Working at KSC is, of course, a great opportunity and a good position to be in for civil servant openings. Boeing South Carolina is not directly space related and pulls me away from a NASA center.

  1. Job stability

The KSC contractor job is tied to a specific program and, to my knowledge, does not offer many alternate avenues if the contract is scaled back. This is common and something I am concerned about, as I would not have much marketable experience for another 2 years. I believe Boeing offers more stability, as there are different programs to go to in the event the 787 program faces challenges.

  1. Learning

Both roles offer a chance to learn a lot. With Boeing, I can learn a lot through the rotation program and proximity to production. In speaking to managers and other liaison engineers, it seems there are a lot of different options for focus areas, especially with a program as young as the 787. The contractor role seems more narrow, focusing on a specific system within GSE.

  1. Location and compensation

Boeing offers a better overall compensation package (both salary and benefits are considerably more competitive than the KSC contractor's). I would, however, prefer to live in Titusville or near Orlando as it has more of what I am looking for in a place to settle. South Carolina is doable, but I don't think it is a place I would want to live long-term based on family needs.

Any advice on making the decision would be much appreciated!

I was offered an entry level position with a contractor at KSC for Artemis. The salary they offered is 71k. That seems somewhat low, so I am curious what other contractors are making.

I am basing the "low" argument on the typical GS promotion cycle and relatively weak benefits compared to civil servants and manufacturers like Boeing. Civil servant pay seems to start at roughly the same amount, but quickly beats the contractor pay. That, combined with their benefits, means that they do have an overall better compensation package.

I am looking for kosher meat in South Carolina. Costcos in Florida and in other nearby states carry that in bulk. Unfortunately, the Charleston, SC location does not carry any (at least not that I've seen). Can Costco do any kind of "special order" delivery of these items between stores if I bought in bulk?

I will be attending an Amentum career fair tomorrow for KSC. I am looking for entry level roles. Most of my experience is in materials and processes (M&P) and structures. I am wondering what interviews typically look like. What types of questions can I expect (STAR, behavioral, technical...)?

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

I have a financial tracking spreadsheet (.ODS) with column headers: DATE, AMOUNT, BALANCE (example attached below). I have a separate sheet within the same spreadsheet where I analyze the information. Included in that analysis is the remaining balance at the end of each month.

Goal: Pull and display the remaining balance at the end of each month

Problem:

  1. There are multiple transactions a day (only the date is listed, not time)
  2. Sometimes there is no transaction on the actual final day of the month.

Attempted methods:

  1. I have tried XLOOKUP with the following formula XLOOKUP(MONTH END DATE,DATE RANGE,BALANCE RANGE,,-1,-2). I have tried the different options for match mode and search mode but cannot get a consistently good result. This generally fails when there is no transaction on the last day of the month
  2. I have tried a longer approach of finding the vertical indices of the date range → take the last/first index corresponding to the last transaction → take balance from that vertical index. I am running into trouble when I try to find the index in a table with a non-exact match (closest match).

Is there a cleaner approach to this?

I was recently offered an entry level position at BSC. The salary range is 70000-97000. I was offered 88000. I understand that is slightly above the median (approximately 33% higher). I want to negotiate a higher salary. My question is what is appropriate. I have seen some suggestions saying that 80% of the top out is reasonable, while others suggest a flat 5K increase. 80% of the top out is 94K.

I bring more combined internship and extracurricular activities than most entry-level hires. In addition to gaining a better idea of what is reasonable, how do I go about asking for more? An increase in salary? A sign-on? More PTO...? How do I justify beyond "I want more."
