There was a queer board games event in the local library last month ...

... and I completely forgot about it till it was over. I'm kicking myself. I love board games, and I don't have any local queer friends. Maybe next year I'll get to it.

Does "a fully mobile managed device" mean that it won't work *without* a mobile app?

I'm trying to pick a printer and scanner to work with my Ubuntu Desktop, ideally working straightforwardly over CUPS without installing any proprietary drivers. I'm finding this wording on a few Brother devices, and it's making me wary. I just want a printer/scanner that comes without spyware or weird stuff.

I'd like a printer I can plug into the computer and it just works, without trying to do anything clever. I have only one computer: I don't need a network printer. There are too many options and I'm overwhelmed.

Since the union of the crowns, why have there been no monarchical names from Scottish history?

Alexander, David, Duncan, and Donald all seem like reasonable names one could imagine from a monarch of the UK, but only names from English history have been used since the union.

Who were the ten races of Hithlum?

I'm reading The Lays of Beleriand, and on line 1164 of "The Lay of the Children of Húrin" we're told that "Túrin was the tallest of the ten races that in Hithlum's hills their homes builded". Who are these ten?

I recall watching a quiz show/game show on Nebula a few years ago, but cannot find it now

It was multiple episodes, filmed in a house, and was (as I recall) mostly a game show but with trivia elements. If anyone else remembers this, and it wasn't a fever dream of mine, please give me its name (or post a link). Thanks.

If I have a backup of the ~/.mozilla directory, can I extract the list of open tabs?

This is on Ubuntu, in case that matters. I am reasonably au fait with PHP, javascript, and simple bash, so if it's in JSON or CSV format, I should be able to extract it. But I don't know which file to look at. There's a lot in there. Any clues would be helpful. Thanks.

An ugly woman on holiday in Venice

I read this novel something like twenty years ago. The main character is an older woman (English, I think). She speaks some Italian, and at one point overhears a couple of locals calling her ugly. She's not happy about it, but she doesn't disagree with them. In fact, she meditates for a long while about being an ugly person in a beautiful city. It's quite a literary novel.

There's some discussion of Venice's history of glassblowing on the island of Murano, and of the fact that the cemetery is also on an island, a bit away from the rest of the city.

At one point, she sees some graffiti from young lovers written on a historic building, and muses that to lovers nowhere is sacred because everywhere is sacred.

She's in Venice for a while, and becomes slightly obsessed with a local child (whose father is an immigrant, also English-speaking, and whose mother is local), at one point luring him away from his mother. The child is tracked down and rescued by an American woman in Venice on holiday. The American doesn't speak Italian, and has trouble with the local currency. (Which was lira. This book is definitely set in a pre-euro world.)

As I write this, I'm getting a vague memory: she travelled to Venice to die. Either she had a terminal disease, or she intended to commit suicide. I cannot recall which. And I don't think she went through with it in the end, but I cannot swear to that.

This is more a vague succession of images and impressions than a plot summary. Sorry about that. But it's what I have.

I decided to have vertical tabs in one profile and normal in the other, along with different colours, just to serve as an extra reminder of which profile I'm in. Twice now I've opened the vertical profile, been greeted with the "Sorry. We’re having trouble getting your pages back." page, and clicked on "Restore session". And then, just as I click, the sidebar comes in, the buttons move, and I click on "Start new session" instead.

On reflection, I should post this as a bug report, too.
