Air France refusing compensation

Hello, last week my flight was cancelled at the airport from London to Paris. I was given the option to take a flight late the following day, which I did not take as it arrived very late and via another city- I thought there was a risk of getting stranded enroute. I confirmed with the counter staff that if I booked a Eurostar to get home earlier, they would reimburse me. They also put me up at an airport hotel for the night.

I submitted all the receipts for my travel (Eurostar and taxis to and from the train stations) and they rejected the claim, stating “The losses that you refer to are not considered to be foreseeable and are therefore too remote to be recoverable from us according to law. You can contact your travel insurer should you wish to claim their reimbursement.”

How do I follow up to ensure I am reimbursed for the expenses I incurred trying to get home asap? They said I am only entitled to €250 compensation and a refund for the unused part of my flight. The Eurostar ticket alone was nearly £300 so this doesn’t cover it.
Thanks for your advice!
