This tree by the bus station was heavy with these pods. Can anyone please identify the tree and fruits, please?

My dad bought this as a souvenir from his travels in the 70s and wove stories around how he sailed on something similar. The stories are treasured memories and so is this ship. Thus I need advice and help on how to clean the shells, redo the roping and making it clean again.
