Visiting Cradle Mountain for a Boys Trip from Melbourne - Advice Needed

Hello all! Im heading to Cradle Mountain with 2 mates in a few months time for 3 nights, and so far we were thinking about staying at Discovery Resorts in Cradle Mountain and do a couple of hikes. But it looks like there's not much grocery shops and what not in the area - what are the considerations we should think through before booking accommodation?

Anything else to consider about a trip to Cradle Mountain?

This is the hike we are thinking of doing:
Marions Lookout via Crater Lake and Wombat Pool circuit

Sri Lankan and other bready bakery recommendations

I've got the munchies big time and want some yummy carbs. What are the best Sri Lankan and other bakeries in Melbourne that serve bready foods (not particularly interested in mainly pastry based stuff like croisstants etc) - want the good old sri lankan fish buns, turkish boreks from vic market etc.

Best Cheap Eats Melbourne

On one of my recent posts asking about the best Laksa someone mentioned Sarawak Laksa at Jalan Alor. Was shook to find out MOST of their meals are $10 during lunch!! Plus they had free chicken soup (granted no chicken in the soup haha). These were comparable to a cheap meal 10 - 15 years ago. What other gems exist around the $10 mark?
PS yes Heart of Carlton ofc we all know about this one.

Best Laksa in Melbourne? (Didn't rate Laksa King Flemington)

Hello all! Where can I find some epic Laksa for this cold winter?

Im out west but open to anywhere inner city, west our north.

My all time favourite is Laksa King in Glen Waverley, but last went there 3 years ago and live too far away now.

Went to LK Flemington recently and eh found it to be very heavy and no flavour. I did hear from friends a couple of years ago that they had somewhat westernised the recipe to appeal to more people and reduced the spice levels and this is exactly what I felt when I tried it.

Where else would you recommend?

Large Melbourne Cafes That Aren't Very Busy

Looking for a large inner city cafe (north, south or west) to partner with for an on-going weekly function. Ideally it's a business that seems to be somewhat quiet so it's a win-win situation to host our function and bring more people in as a result. Has anyone seen any like this recently?

Public Liability Insurance for Dating Events Business

Edit: Based in Australia

Starting a dating events business that has things like walks, run clubs, pickleball etc.

For things like pickleball I'd expect the proper provider to have the public liability insurance.

Does anyone have any advise on how to go about getting Public Liability Insurance for something like this?

Ive tried Bizcover and they have advised they won't be able to support this.

Undercover public spaces for light rain?

Hey everyone,

Bit of a random one, but does anyone know any good undercover public spaces around Melbourne that are still nice to hang around in if there’s light rain?

Thinking somewhere that could fit around 20 people standing and chatting for an hour or so, without being too cramped or feeling like we’re blocking a walkway.

Doesn’t need to be fully indoors, just covered enough that people wouldn’t get soaked if it drizzles.

Bonus points if it’s near decent coffee.

Thanks!

Edit: Ideally cbd or slightly south of the river

Do people see investment income as the same as wages or differently?

I was thinking about all of the rage with these CGT changes - and can confirm I am someone who is really, really, really annoyed. This got me thinking as to why?

Then I realised the reason being fundamentally I believe that investment returns should not be taxed at the same rate as wages as there's a significant risk involved with making an investment whether that's buying shares, buying a house, starting a business (and done by money that has already paid tax). Whereas wages is a no risk agreement (editing to say monetary risk as people have validly pointed out health risk at work).

The issue with property investment is that there's a double dip with negative gearing and a CGT discount. I know some people do this with shares as well, once again is something I believe needs to be closed off.

Keen to hear some views from people on this topic - whichever way you lean.

Edit: making really clear as annoyed as I am on this topic this is for a genuine discussion without an agenda 😊

Edit 2: loving the perspectives and discussion everyone 😊😊

Edit 3: Thank you so much to everyone who contributed! Definitely a lot of valid arguments both ways to consider. A part of me is reflecting on whether I have just invested/managed my money smartly to become a privileged person now, or if it is right to tax those who have invested/managed their money smartly to become rich. Is this what we need to tax more or is it the hand-me-down money where people didn't really do anything to actually create that wealth, which we need to tax harsher? Honestly I have no idea how to feel about this whole thing - but definitely don't feel as annoyed having heard views from the other side.

Is the govt trying to delay FI / force us to work longer and rely more on super?

Someone on AusFinance made the quote "It's not a tax on the already wealthy. It's a tax on emerging wealth."

This got me thinking about a few things:

  1. The govt. Could have easily means tested a lot of these reforms, esp with 30% on CGT on shares. (edit: similar to superannuation tax, not centrelink payments)
  2. The lowest taxed items remain to be PPOR (just stamp duty) and Super. Obvious sign these are the two places they want wealth heading.
  3. Trusts I agree with what they have done, if anything arguably should be completely removed.

Does this mean what the govt. is trying to do is take away the option of retiring early as comfortably as we could in the past, and force us to work longer, rely on superannuation, all while large corps and slashing jobs based on "AI" for fun?

What are other people's take on this?

Being upfront: I'm in the early stages of putting together a dating events business and I'd rather ask people than guess. No pitch, no link, no signup - just trying to understand the landscape before I build something nobody asked for.

Here's what I keep running into. Thursday and similar events seem to do well on ticket sales, but the feedback I hear from people who've actually gone is pretty consistent didn't click with anyone, wouldn't go back. Meanwhile, half the people I know are completely cooked on the apps but still won't go to an event.

I'm trying to figure out whether that's fixable or whether in-person dating events are just inherently a bit naff.

So if you've been to one - what actually went wrong? And was there any moment, however small, that worked? If you haven't been but have thought about it - what's stopped you? Awkwardness, the format, the price, the people who tend to show up, something else entirely?

If anyone wants to go deeper than a comment, my DMs are open.

Cheers 🙏

Im thinking of applying for the big brother big sister (as a mentor) program locally but wondering if anyone has had any experiences and how it was?

Also any other similar programs youve participated in that you've enjoyed?
