It's so great to see people shed toxic versions of Christianity and put something better in its place. I still, 8 years into my Christian conversion, generally view Christianity skeptically or even negatively due to the fundamentalism that has gripped our faith.
The fundamentalist's time is over. Now is our time.
For me personally, I'm shifting away from orthodoxy, that is, from a belief-centered approach. Inspired by liberal theologians, instead of asking myself "is this literally true?" about any given passage anywhere in the bible, I instead put trust in Jesus, have love for Jesus, am loyal to Jesus. In the words of Marcus Borg, it's relational and transformative. I'm more concerned with what scripture is telling me rather than trying to jam it into history somewhere, or trying to decide what any given biblical figure actually said/did and what is legend.
That isn't to say orthodoxy is toxic. Inclusive orthodoxy is great. No issue there. I'm just personally moving in a different direction. One I'm being called to take.
I know you all cross paths with us bookkeepers quite a bit.
I want to know, from your point of view, what separates a "meh" bookkeeper from a great one.
Bookkeeping is where I landed, more or less by accident. But I'm here and I'm going to be the best I can be.
I intend to ask this over at r/Accounting to get their perspective.
I'm currently an in-house bookkeeper. I don't intend to just be good. I want to be master class in my profession.
So from the perspective of a bookkeeper, what makes one really great?
TEC is a pretty low control Church. There isn't anyone policing our beliefs and varying convictions are tolerated.
How do you personally discern what is true? I personally enjoy chewing on the various theological views, but I often find myself overwhelmed at the size and scope of it all. I sometimes am pulled toward two convicting things.
How do you do it?
For those of you asking: the answer is no.
One of my accounting instructors put it best: Bookkeepers will be systems managers. Tech does the heavy lifting, we manage the entire system. It's already like that in a lot of ways. Analytical skills will be more valuable than data entry.
What this means is we'll be waaayyyy more productive as tech advances, meaning less workers to do the job, leading to a contraction in employment growth in our sector. We're at like -5% over 10 years right now. The contraction will by no means will lead to an end to the profession.
For anyone wondering. This is all just from me looking into it myself.
So, Jesus's resurrection is a curious case for me. I don't take much of the bible literally, but clearly Jesus's disciples experienced Him as resurrected and were willing to die for Him.
I'm here wondering exactly what they saw and experienced if not the literal Gospel accounts.
Given how crucial and central our Lord's resurrection is, what kinds of things can we rule out in favor of this being a historical narrative?
I'm an Episcopalian. I consider myself "broad church," between orthodoxy and modernism but leaning modernist. I don't like the term "theologically liberal" because it so often gets confused with political liberalism, but that's what I mean when I say modernist and modernism. Make no mistake, I'm as politically liberal as they come. I just like to be clear on terms so I don't have to clarify.
I believe the historical-critical method is invaluable, also. That and I find it downright fascinating.
Believe it or not, I use a lot of Catholic practices in my worship and devotion, and incorporate many of their ideas into my theology, but I do so minus the magisterium. One could say I'm Anglo-Catholic.
I got here following my sense of reason in light of scripture and tradition. I got in where I fit it. I contemplated a lot, chewed on different ideas, explored, prayed, conversed, read. The Christian path isn't easy to make sense of, and this is how I did it and what I came up with.
I landed in the Episcopal Church by dumb luck. I used to go to AA meetings at an Episcopal Church so I figured there would be a good place to start. I stayed.

So I work for a 9 acre community garden. We grow tons of produce and flowers to donate and sell. I have thus far, despite my best efforts, been unable to cost these products. I come up with some pretty wild numbers when I try. Every expense is so spread out over everything, it's hard to accurately apply it to any given product.. I'm thinking about using the farm price method to cost my inventory.
I know the farm price method isn't GAAP but man would it make my life easier. What do you think of it and what impact would it have on my financial statements?

I do the books for a start-up non-profit. I kick ass but there is still so much to learn. We recently started with a regional powerhouse accounting firm and their help is god tier. I'm immensely grateful. I just have a few blind spots as a bookkeeper and they're filing it all in.
The non-profit is a family thing. My boss is my mom. She came to me concerned about the age of the CPAs she met with. "These are just kids, are you sure they have expertise?" Oh yea, ma. Yea they do. I explained the nature of public accounting. You do it outta college until your mid twenties, then jump ship to industry. Usually. In the meantime, it's exposure to everything an accountant can be exposed to, while being worked like a 19th century coal miner. They gave us a cash flow analysis that blew my freaking mind. I asked them to teach me their sorcery.
I'm excited for this professional relationship. Thanks you all you do, friends. I know those busy seasons hurt but you really help people and I appreciate you.
For me it's becoming quite central. I think it's probably the main thing I walked away with after my brief time in OCIA. I have a Catholic prayer book with tons of Marian prayers. I'll keep it near for sure.

I can barely function.
I was slow tapering for about 4 years, twice having to go back up because I tapered too much. After my most recent taper, which went fairly smooth, there were several symptoms that just didn't go away. Cognitive, sexual, appetite, digestive, sleep, anxiety. Everything is off. Nothing is quite "right." It's not super distressing - like it doesn't hurt, but it's interfering with life and functioning. It's been this way about 5 months now. Well, 5 months since initial withdrawal started. Usually symptoms clear up after 2-3 months.
What would you advise? Obviously I'm going to hold here for a bit on dose.
The drug I'm tapering is fluoxetine.
