Do you understand roshambo/ the magic wheel in W101. Also, what's your highest level character?

It's just something I'm curious about. IDK how to make a poll in reddit :/

Edit: I was afraid this would happen when asking the people on wiz socials

Edit 2: more people understand it than expected, but most people who respond have multiple max level characters. Multiple people are also fairly experienced and don't understand it. There's way too much sample bias to draw conclusions tbh

Ice's identity should change from defense -> counter puncher

I see suggestions on how to fix Ice which range from giving them a blade earlier, to higher damage, to better taunts, to less piercable shields, etc. The fundamental problem is that W101 is designed for everyone to play like a storm wizard. Most fights are 2 vs. 1 and over in 1-3 rounds. Instead of making ice more similar to storm, they should be given a different playstyle that makes them want to take damage.

The overall game would need to change so that there aren't nearly so many low health 2 vs. 1 mob fights. As for ice specifically, they should be given a type of shield that rewards them for tanking damage. Some ideas:

  • A shield that applies the non-mitigated damage of the attack onto the enemy
  • A shield that applies a strong trap on the enemy who broke it
  • A star spell that applies a +30% tower shield on everyone every time you take a hit
  • A shield that breaks and gives you a really high damage sun spell
  • A shield that breaks into three weaknesses on the enemy

The general point is that "resisting damage" isn't a rewarding identity, nor is it needed the way W101 is balanced. Being a counter puncher could be a fun, different way to play.

Edit: idk how to make this not oppressive in PvP. Maybe it only triggers on spells over 3 pips or something?

Vintage Story: why I think that there should be more processing-focused crafting systems

When I think of a crafting system, I think of collecting a number of reagents and throwing them into a grid. Usually the bottleneck is collecting many assorted items that I honestly don't keep track of. Then, the payoff is clicking "craft" in a menu and receiving my item.

Then I discovered Vintage Story, which is like Minecraft if it slowed down and fleshed out all of its mechanics. The two strongest metals in the game are iron and steel. Both of these come from the same ore [iron], which is why I was shocked that the game gave me a massive vein of it that took three trips to empty.

As it turns out, getting iron is easy, but processing it is hard. The first thing is that your standard crucible can't get hot enough to smelt it, so you need to make bloomeries and coal. Those both have their own processes, but the point is that your smelted iron has slag on it. You need to hit it with a hammer to knock off the slag and shape your ingots. There are more advanced recipes that let you use iron ingots, but it's much better to preprocess them into iron plates. You can semi-automate both of these things with a windmill or waterwheel attached to a helve hammer, which still needs help from you. Steel requires processing the iron ingots using a particular setup and lots of attention/fuel over multiple in-game days. It takes a lot of time, but it's a nice project during the in-game winter where you can forge while it snows outside.

My point is, literally getting the materials for these items is easy, but it takes a lot of work to process it. I rarely see this in games and it was a refreshing perspective that really made me feel like I was crafting something. I don't think it can work for every game, but in my opinion, more of them should spend more time crafting and less time gathering resources/ clicking through menus.

I am in the iron age and have a functional setup, but it's ugly as sin. I'm using a windmill so I put it really high up so it works better. I also figured that I'd make my setup next to the windmill so that I don't need to make a ton of axels. The problem is that I now have a large cobblestone/packed dirt box floating in the sky with a weird ladder-shaft connecting it to the ground.

Anyways, does anyone have pics of their forge setup that I could use for inspiration? Bonus points if it's high in the air, though I guess I can transfer the power to the ground if it really comes down to it. The trailers have pretty setups, but I feel like I'll be mauled by monsters and the elements if I have a nice open design like that.

I also didn't know what flare to use, sorry.
