Bushnell Prime 10x42 vs Vortex Triumph HD 10x42: seeking advice
I'm trying to buy a 10x42 binocular for hiking and birdwatching. I've narrowed it down to these two and I'm honestly stuck as they have the same price in Finland.
Both get solid individual reviews online, but I can't find anyone who's actually compared them side by side, so I'm hoping someone here has hands-on time with one or both.
Question 1: Which one gives better real-world brightness and image clarity?
On paper they're close — similar weight, similar field of view, both BAK4/roof prism, both around the same price. From what I've read, the Prime gets praised for punching above its price optically, with good low-light clarity and minimal astigmatism for the price bracket. The Triumph HD gets decent marks too but a few reviews mention softer edges and some chromatic aberration (purple fringing) against bright skies. But these are separate reviews from different reviewers testing different conditions, so I don't fully trust comparing across them. If anyone has looked through both, even briefly, I'd love to know which one actually looks better to your eyes side by side — especially in low light (dawn/dusk).
Question 2: Do either of these actually have attached/tethered objective lens covers?
This is a small thing but it's bugging me because I can't get a straight answer. Official product pages and retailer listings say both have tethered/attached lens caps:
- Bushnell Prime — B&H listing: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1646832-REG/bushnell_bp1042b_10x42_prime_binoculars_black.html ("Tethered objective lens caps protect the lens surface...")
- Bushnell Prime — official Bushnell page: https://www.bushnell.com/vault-x-binocular-deals/prime-10x42-blackout-camo-binoculars/BU-BP1042BC.html ("Features attached front lens caps... built-in lens caps that... won't ever fall off")
- Vortex Triumph HD — official Vortex page: https://vortexoptics.com/vortex-triumph-hd-10x42-binoculars.html ("Tethered Objective Lens Covers")
- Vortex Triumph HD — independent AllOutdoor review confirming this firsthand: https://www.alloutdoor.com/2023/06/01/alloutdoor-review-vortex-triumph-hd-10x42-binocular/ (reviewer specifically mentions the tethered covers being useful)
But then I found these two YouTube unboxing/review videos, and in both, the units shown do NOT appear to have attached covers on either binocular:
So now I don't know if this is a running change between production batches, a bundle-only accessory, regional packaging difference, or if the listings are just wrong/copied from an older spec sheet. If you own either one, could you confirm whether your unit actually came with caps attached to the body, or loose ones you have to keep track of separately?
Thanks for the feedback ❤️
