Progress on Castle
After my watercolour pencil base layers were completed, I just added finishing touches using wax based pencils. I might just leave this painting alone because I am afraid of overworking it.

I love using Albrecht Durer watercolour pencils but I find sharpening them by hand is taking a lot of time with a Prismacolor handheld sharper because they are too big. Currently I own an X acto brand electric sharpener from Staples that fits Goldfaber Aqua, Staedtler Karat watercolour pencils and Polychromos and Holbein because they are the same size as standard graphite pencils. Would the Deli sharpener or Afmat sharpener be an appropriate choice?
I switched up my technique and used watercolour pencils for the initial layers of this artwork then for the fine details I switched back to regular colour pencils as the watercolour pencils were unable to hold a sharp point. The watercolour pencils used were a combination of Albrecht Durer, Goldfaber Aqua and Staedtler. The regular colour pencils were a combination of Arrtx, Prismacolor,Polychromos and Holbein. I like to mix and match brands because Holbein has excellent pastels, Prismacolor has the best white and Polychromos produce good dark colours for shadows.
I scribbled more re pencil to darken the clouds and water. Pencils used:
I’m about 70% finished. This challenge improved my technique on creating skies in watercolour pencil. My trick for skies is to apply light pressure and colour in small circular motions to minimize harsh pencil marks. Then I used the Caran de Ache red waterbrush which has a fibre tip similar to a marker to dissolve my pencil. This waterbrush is good for painting large areas. The colours I used for the sky were ultramarine blue, alizarin crimson and a gold type colour. For the rocks I used the Staedtler tinted watersoluble graphite pencil because graphite gives a nice technique for rocks and bricks.
I chose the photo with kids because I wanted to get better at mixing skintones.
I followed a tutorial from the book “ Paint the National Parks” by Emily Olson. I would add a layer of pencil, activate it with water to remove the pencil streaks and repeat until the final stages. This technique works best on cotton based watercolour pencils. I only used 4 watercolour pencils (ultramarine, burnt sienna, raw umber, and white).
I used a combination of the Goldfaber Aqua Watercolour pencils and the Albrecht Durer pencils on Canson Mixed Media paper using a Staedtler waterbrush. The best thing about watercolour pencil is that it requires less water than traditional watercolour paint and therefore I don’t need to use my expensive cotton based papers. I added lots of layers and blending with small amounts of water to avoid muddying the colours.
This painting is about 80% watercolour using a mix of Cotman and Holbein. Then for the fine details I used watercolour pencil and gouache. This took about a week to paint and I took the reference photo myself.
I bought some empty palettes from Amazon and mixed custom colours from the Winsor Newton Cotman watercolour 20 set of tubes and Holbein Shell Pink and Ivory. I like to do a lot of landscape painting which is why I made lots of different shades of green. I also made a few portrait colours and pinks for human skin. The different dark colours help with easily adding shadows to a variety of subjects. This setup allows me to buy less paint and save time on mixing colours on my palette.
It took me a few days to finish this. I deliberately omitted lots of details because I wanted to keep the colours light. This was also my first time using masking fluid and I can say that masking fluid gives excellent results for sunlight
I used the Faber Castell Goldfaber Aqua Black watercolour pencil for the initial layers. Then I added Black and Grey Polychromos pencils for definition. Paper is Canson XL Mixed Media sketchbook paper.
I got inspired from the Season 1 episode where Mr. Big takes Carrie to the Chinese restaurant and she is thinking about how he is secretly ashamed of her. I titled this piece “Feeding her False Hope” and posted the earlier drafts onto the coloured pencil subreddit. My intention was to deliberately make Mr. Big look sinister and place “hints” that something is off about their relationship ( another woman literally placed between them, Carrie’s side of the table holding more weight). I want to create more fanart of different characters of the show.
