My July submission

I tried a few new things on this.

Firstly doing an ink sketch for nature/landscape.

I'm not to used to hatching, so this was a learning experience.

Also, you can see this in the process images, I did the reflection at the end to try and mirror the background, which isn't as nice as I'd like, I'm really happy with my improvement.

First timer

Looking for advice for better saturation without over working the paint/paper. Does that just come with time and practice?

Different problems...lol

Started the July challenge, but the paper is already dying (by the little boat). Landscape is new for me and I'm just playing around for fun...any good advice?

July Challenge #1 - Not Too Proud of This

Thank goodness we have other photos, because this one looks messy. And I can't paint rocks. 😭 Mixed media work.

How about a little bit of colour theory?

I have worked on this all day, guys. Is it clear how colours become muted, and what are the colour undertones? Should I add more explanation?

Do you think the boat should he bigger?

Work in progress, July Challenge. Sorry for the typo, I wanted to write "should BE bigger" 😂😂😂

July Challenge #1

Hi! My Husband show me your subreddit and I thought it would be nice to try watercolor pencils after long break. Interesting and surprising experience. Feels little surrelistic. It does not look like my old paintings at all :D What do you think?

u/middia — 5 days ago

I will draw this for the monthly challenge. There is a traceable image in the comment area. 👇

Tip: if you don't like to paint reflections, draw a field instead. 🙂

Monthly Theme, July 2026: "Trees and Foliage"

This month, our theme is “Trees and Foliage". The images are from Pixabay, everyone is free to copy them and create an artwork based on them. This month, we have chosen 4 photos, because they represent different challenges. Of course, you can use your own reference images of the same theme. We welcome artists of all experience levels. Feel free to bring your own ideas to life. Share your reference photos, sketches, works in progress, and finished pieces.

NEW! Everyone who completes a challenge gets a unique badge with a trophy in it. (See mine for reference.) If you submit 2 works, you get two trophies, and so on.

While watercolour pencils are our subreddit’s main medium, you are welcome to explore mixed media watercolours, inks, gouache, or other watercolour-like wet media that doesn't dry waterproof.

If you share reference photos, please make sure they are ones you are happy for others to use as inspiration. We love seeing how creativity spreads and evolves here, and we can’t wait to see what you come up with. Have fun, and please add your work below and/or post it directly in the subreddit. See more photos below. 👇 😉

How does the hot summer affect your motivation?

Honestly, I have been thinking of drawing and painting all day, but the weather is so warm that I kind of lose motivation. Do you paint as much as you used to?

I’m working small. How can I “protect” fine, tiny highlights?

Like the bumps on the frog’s back, the whites of his little eyes, and random reflective speckles in the debris pile?

Xior Lumiar, Lisbon - watercolor pencils test

Here I wanted to test a new kind (for me) of watercolor paper—smooth hot pressed Arches —and, most importantly, new watercolor pencils, which I bought specifically for working on crisp, graphic shadows.

In the end, I only liked the brownish gray pencil (which the buildings are painted in). The Payne's grey pencil I'd been so hopeful about turned out to be too blue (as for me) (the last photo shows swatches, in case anyone else finds it helpful), so I was forced to use Payne's grey watercolors from my usual Van Gogh palette.

In this complex of buildings, I like the rhythm and direction of the forms. I even tried to take a reference and paint with the same perspective distortion, which I think reflects this aspiration to the future (these are student dormitory buildings, and I hope the youth there are the future). And I think pencils convey the texture of the grey panels of the building more beautifully and generally add a graphic quality to the drawing. Also, I think a contrast between trees and buildings are more sharp in case of using pencils.

What do you think of this combination of materials? did I manage to convey the idea? Any comments on the work are welcome!

Poll for July’s Monthly Theme

Let’s decide together what we want to draw/paint in July together. If there is a tie, we will flip a coin. If you don't feel like completing the challenge, you can still vote, just choose what you would like to see. We have a full week to decide, and still complete June's challenge. ☺️
Please consider the challenges. For example, how would you draw reflections, clouds, the dress of the bride, or foliage? These subjects are not easy, and it’s an opportunity to discuss technical difficulties and get through them together.
Edit: Even if your favorite subject doesn’t win, please share your work in the subreddit. The sub is not exclusive to the challenges. 😉
