Pricing your art
One thing that I’m very passionate about as an artist and a plushie maker is pricing your work. I used to be so uncomfortable charging for the art I made. When I mathed out how much time it took and the cost of materials, the price that came up always felt waaaay too high. It wasn’t until I read a post by another artist that I was slowly able to change my mind and start charging a livable wage for my work. The post said that every time you undercharge for your work as an artist, you’re teaching the customer to undervalue not just your art, but the creations of every other artist around you. If you are a hobby maker and people are used to seeing your art priced at $2 an hour for your labour time, then the creators who turn their skills into their business and source of income to pay bills are competing with that expectation. We as makers need to realize that undervaluing ourselves is making life harder for our fellow artists as well. Once I realized that, I was able to start actually charging what my time is worth, which also helped me and how I relate to myself as an artist 🥰 Just thought I’d share! What do you think?
