Tommy John won 164 games AFTER his eponymous surgery.

We all know the name Tommy John, and probably know that he came back to pitch after having the famous surgery on his UCL.

But if he had come back and only pitched for a season or two with mixed results, we might not know the name because other pitchers would have likely not opted to have the procedure done if they didn't think it would actually help them (side note: the next two pitchers that had TJ surgery never returned to the majors).

But Tommy John didn't just come back and extend his career, he had a whole other career after the fact. Here are the highlights of pre and post surgery:

Player Ages Games WAR Wins ERA SO IP
Pre-TJ 20-31 355 31.1 124 2.97 1,273 2,165
Post-TJ 33-46 405 31 164 3.66 972 2,544

He also added two Cy Young runner ups post-surgery.

For reference on his 164 wins in his 30's and 40's, (I can't stress this enough that this is after having the first Tommy John surgery in history), here are the only active pitchers with more than 160 wins in their career:

Justin Verlander

Max Scherzer

Just a reminder, Otto Graham was the original dual-threat QB. He's still 4th all-time in QB rushing TDs.

Tim Kurkjian "There are four urinals. John Smoltz to my right. Tom Glavin on my left. At the 4th urinal was Greg Maddux."

From the Tony Kornheiser Show yesterday, Tim Kurkjian tells a story that happened while he was in Cooperstown last weekend for the HOF ceremonies:

Tim- "I go to the bathroom and I'm the first one in there. There are four urinals. I pull in and right behind me, a guy says "Hey, they'll let anyone in here."

It was John Smoltz. He was to my right.

I look to my left. Tom Glavine on my left.

Then I looked at the fourth urinal, which was behind me, and it was Greg Maddux"

Tony- "You're right in the starting rotation!"

KD went 561 days in between NBA games due to an Achilles tear. He's has nearly identical production both before and after.

Kevin Durant tore his Achilles on June 10, 2019 and didn't play another NBA game until December 22, 2020.

This is what his production looked like the the 6 seasons both before and after the injury:

Seasons Games PPG RPG APG TS%
2014-19 388 27.5 7.3 5.3 63.7
2021-26 352 27.4 6.4 5.1 64.4

Slight dip in rebounding, and a slight increase in efficiency.

It's pretty remarkable that despite sustaining what is often a career ending (or at least career altering) injury, KD is essentially the exact same player and is maintaining the same level of productivity into his late 30's that he had in his prime.

Kyle Juszczyk doesn't really want to be compared to TEs

Juszczyk was absolutely unique among FBs last year. According to PFF, there were only 14 FBs in the league, and Juszczyk had 50% more snaps than the 2nd FB (Alec Ingold).

Unfortunately for Juszczyk though, his productivity doesn't even sniff the same level as somewhat comparable TEs.

For example, Juszczyk had 253 receiving snaps, 21 pass block snaps, and 291 run block snaps.

Here are the TEs last year with at least 250 receiving and run block snaps with fewer than 30 pass block snaps:

Kyle Pitts

Dawson Knox

Dallas Goedert

Colston Loveland

Harold Fannin Jr.

Trey McBride

Travis Kelce

Even the least productive pass catcher out of this group (Knox), blows Juszczyk out of the water:

Player Rec. Yards Rec. Snaps Run Block Grade Run Block Snaps
Kyle Juszczyk 213 253 56 291
Dawson Knox 417 375 63.2 341

Juszczyk is a 1-of-1 FB, but an even remotely comparable TE is simply far more productive and valuable.

DeMar DeRozan is 1 of 13 players in NBA history with 25k points, 5k rebounds, and 5k assists.

Here is every player in league history with at least 25,000 points, 5,000 rebounds, and 5,000 assists:

Player Points Rebounds Assists
LeBron James 43,440 12,095 12,016
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar 38,387 17,440 5,660
Karl Malone 36,928 14,968 5,248
Kobe Bryant 33,643 7,047 6,306
Kevin Durant 32,597 8,254 5,280
Michael Jordan 32,292 6,672 5,633
James Harden 29,339 6,809 8,873
Russell Westbrook 27,176 9,025 10,351
DeMar DeRozan 26,711 5,434 5,185
Oscar Robertson 26,710 7,804 9,887
John Havlicek 26,395 8,007 6,114
Kevin Garnett 26,071 14,662 5,445
Jerry West 25,192 5,366 6,238

Kinda wild to see DeRozan on a list that is almost exclusively inner-circle HOFers. His current HOF probability has him at 48% right behind Joe Johnson and LaMarcus Aldridge. Should he be a no-doubt 1st ballot HOFer though?
