Steering dead, wandering in the lane

2005 BMW 530 i M54 217,000 miles : I have to drive at moderate speed as the car drifts and wanders. I have to drive with 2 hands just to keep it in the lane. When I hit a bump it feels like the car is going to leave the lane. I don’t have a the active steering light on. What could it be.
