Cooking rice

so i was at a hut recently and some people there were eating hot instant rice - I’m generally a noodle guy, but this looked good. I didn’t see them cook it though. I found the same rice they were using in the supermarket but they only have microwave and put instructions. these guys cooked and ate it out of the bag. did they just put the whole bag in boiling water or something? please teach me their ways I’d like to try it in the trail - even though they are heavier than noodles.

Tramping in snow

I’m an experienced hiker but not in snow and I’d love to do it. Are there any hikes that go through snow that don’t involve mountain climbing, ropes etc. I’d just love to go on a 2 or 3 day hike that involves cold and snow recommendations anywhere in nz would be great. Thanks

Favourite games to hike with?

I always take a pack of cards and on more than one occasion this has resulted in games in the hut with random strangers - but generally it’s my partner and I. I was wondering if anyone here regularly hikes with any games beyond a standard card deck? What do you recommend?

Japanese joke question

I’m watching a show in Japanese with English subtitles (I don’t speak Japanese) - midnight diner.

There was a joke in one episode where a guy says he calls lottery tickets, pottery tickets, because the lottery is a crock.

This works in English because lottery and pottery rhyme and crock refers to a lie and some pottery. How does this work in Japanese?! Or did they just create a pun in there that is totally different to the Japanese version?

Americans, what's with the paper plates?

I belong to a number of food/eating/nutrition subs where people often post pictures of their homemade meals. I'm often struck by how many people use paper plates. I remember using paper plates for kids parties but that's about it. Is it common to use paper plates for home eating in the U.S.?

Avoiding the US estate tax - VWRA

Hi everyone,

I currently have some USD funds in IBKR. However, like many here recently I have only just become awarre of the estate taxapplicable if/when this is over 60kUSD.

So 2 quick questions - I'm a set and forget type of guy and like VT.

  1. Would VRWA an Irish domiciled fund be a fairly good replacement for a low cost diversified ETF similar to VT? It doesn't cover small caps but I'm not too worried about this as I have cover elsewhere.
  2. Anyone have another suggestion given my preferences that I could investigate?

EDIT: One other question - it is an accumulating fund which as I understand it reinvests dividends but in a way that does not increase the cost basis - therefore does not affect your FIF threshold?

USD investments and tax returns

Hoping there’s a patient person out there willing to assist. I’ve just got my tax letter from IRD. No tax to pay. However I do have some USD ETF funds that aren’t listed IN my letter through IBKR (I also have some in sharsies but sharsies is listed so I assume it is calculated as part of that?). All up it is under 50k spread between the two platforms.

What do I have to do here? How do I go about declaring it?

Thank you.
