Un regalo para mi mama espanola

Hola Familia

Reconnecting with my Spanish mom after 25 years has revealed hidden Mommy Issues

Just like what the title says.

I never had a close relationship with my own mother. I kind of just moved on and accepted that.

Recently, I just reconnected with my Spanish host mom after 25+ years and she fulfills that nurturing maternal figure I never had, and it has been a very emotional journey.

I just want to say to all host families that you guys may mean more than meets the eye to your host students.

And to all exchange students, you may literally gain a new chosen family depending on your own family situation.

Sometimes I think I was born into the wrong culture and country.

I am forever grateful. Viva Espana! ❤️🇪🇸

Maybe it is just me and the cultural inter-relational differences but sometimes I get thrown off when pet names or more, in my opinion, intimate adjectives are used by strangers.

Example 1: A waitress in Mexico said to me “puedo recoger tu plato, chula?”

Example 2: I recently reconnected with an older friend I had met over 2 decades ago and was thrown off with her “buenas noches, cielo”

Im not used to say, a retail worker, saying “have a great day, hunny bunny” or “take care, princess” or “you are very welcome, beautiful”. Nor have I encountered this in my personal friend group, which is 95% Spanish-speaking. 🤷🏻‍♀️
