What’s your food budget?

I’m curious what peoples food budgets are, and am specifically interested in all the single people’s budgets. What do you normally buy and eat, and from where?

Mine is all over the place, so I’m starting to meal prep better to get it under control.

Kerry Diamond case: a reply from the DA

I received this email today with more information regarding the ongoing situation.. And I broke up the paragraphs for easier reading.

I spoke with the assigned deputy district attorney yesterday about the case.  As predicted, the attorney for Mr. Diamond is asserting he is, again, unable to aid and assist.

The hope is that we can get Mr. Diamond placed at the Oregon State Hospital for restoration services.  However, that is only a temporary solution, as, based on the federal court order, he can only be there for up to six months.

We hope that is enough time to restore him to fitness and resume prosecution of the case.

Release decisions are made by Pretrial Services through delegated authority granted to them by the Lane County Circuit Court, not the District Attorney’s Office.

With the passage of Senate Bill 48 and a Chief Justice Order guiding release decisions, Oregon has created a clear legal presumption toward pretrial release.

While there is a limited potential to hold people for serious crimes where there is a clear threat to the public or victim, usually only for the most serious of crimes, the vast majority of cases are released on release agreements or with small amounts of bail being set.

This has led to the community, law enforcement, and prosecutors feeling quite frustrated that we have legally constructed a revolving door that has allowed repeat offenders to continually be released to reoffend.

The entire Criminal Justice System needs a rebalancing.

I am all for the protection of constitutional rights of the accused.  But a better balance must be struck between community safety, protecting victims of crime, and the rights of the accused than currently exists under Oregon law.

How bad are the mosquitoes at Waldo Lake?

I’m looking to have my maiden voyage on a kayak and go camping there in a couple weeks. Just wondering if anyone has experience up there with the lake or mosquitoes this time of year

Oregons mental health battle

I received this email today from Christopher J. Parosa Lane County’s District Attorney.

We are prosecuting Mr. Diamond as vigorously as possible.  The challenge here is that he has previously been found never able to aid and assist by the Lane County Circuit Court.  This determination creates significant challenges to our ability to (1) get him held for restoration services at the Oregon State Hospital, and (2) to hold him accountable for his criminal conduct, as a person by constitutional law cannot be made to stand trial if they do not have competency.

The proliferation of “med never able” psychological determinations coming from the State Hospital is a relatively new phenomenon.  Based on our experience, it seems those psychological findings are the product of the State Hospital recognizing that they have an insufficient amount of time to restore a person to fitness due to the existing federal court order and the legislatures recent codification of those restoration timelines.  The timelines established by the federal court order are completely untethered to any therapeutic considerations for the mentally ill individual.  Instead, they were simply crafted to help expedite a patients stay in the State Hospital in order to free additional beds for those that have more recently been deemed unable to aid and assist by the trial courts of Oregon.  Recognizing the federal court’s desire to move people out of the hospital, the State Hospital has taken to incorporating assessments, educated guesses, as to whether they will have sufficient time to restore a person before the artificial clock for restoration expires.  From my perspective, which I feel comfortable stating is the position of the vast majority of District Attorneys across Oregon, the State’s failure to provide adequate mental health beds in the state to address our expanding crisis has resulted in the citizens of the State of Oregon and the mentally ill individuals themselves being less safe.  That is true because there is little the criminal justice system can do with an underfunded local mental health systems that are not appropriately situated to deal with individuals that need hospital levels of care.  Thus, these individuals are sent back to their originating counties only to be placed into the community with minimal supervision under an ill-equipped community restoration program or their cases are simply dismissed.  I find this totally unacceptable for all interested parties – the community, victims and the mentally ill and their families.

Worse, once a “med never able” finding has been made by the court, in alignment with the psychologist’s conclusions, that finding is used to by the defense to justify dismissals of all future criminal cases brought against a person.  Which means the community is subject to additional victimization and the mentally ill individual is relegated to a life marked by anti-social interactions with those around them, the dangers of living on the streets, and facing the prospect that the damage caused to their brain by disorders like psychosis may become permanent.  This is, from my perspective, inhumane.  This problem is not unique to Lane County.  It is plaguing the entire state, which is why DAs Vasquez, Barton, and Wentworth held a joint press conference calling on the state to finally address the issue and Oregonians are exasperated by the failure to act.  As the District Attorney of Lane County, I feel helpless under these current conditions to protect the safety of the community and victims or to offer any meaningful help to those mentally ill individuals whose illness is causing them to live unenviable existences.

The State of Oregon needs to build greater capacity and tend to these vulnerable individuals in our society.  This is the responsibility of the policymakers in the Oregon State legislature and the Governor.  Everyone benefits from a substantially greater investment in addressing the problem.  So, please reach out to your state legislators and senators to demand action to address the broken mental health system in this state.  We need citizens to put some pressure on these people to reprioritize spending and build great State Hospital capacity.

To suggest that I am angry about the current state of the mental health system in the State of Oregon would be putting it mildly.  I’m livid.  Oregonians should be livid.  Families of the mentally ill should be livid.

Share your Camp Wilani stories?

I loved my time there. The counselors, the grounds, games in the Bald Meadow, themed dinners and evening program. Etc etc

It was always an adventure. It sure leaves a hole in my heart thinking about how special it was to go there.

Anyone else here want to share some Camp Fire love ❤️?

Also if anyone knows where I could get a songbook… I know the one they had was incomplete, but still, it would be an amazing to have one.

The other day… I met a bear…

What’s up with that abandoned grocery store on Mohawk?

It’s been empty for a few decades, I grew up close to it, and it’s been empty for decades. 🧐

Sub Shop shout out!

Raving review about the Sub Shop on W11th.

I’ve heard about them before, but saw no mention of them in recent food recommendations on this forum.

They closed I think for a period of time, and are reopen now.

I went in today and bought a footlong, the #1, for $12.85 and it’s huge!!

If you go, sure you tip the lady working there is great! 😊

Also leave a review on their Google page. They have a low rating surprisingly
