Donation of Toys

Hi everyone!

I'm part of a student-led initiative called Neighborhood, where we're working to build a stronger community for families with young children. As we get started, we're looking to collect toys that are still in good condition and no longer being used.

If your child has outgrown some toys that are just sitting at home, we'd be incredibly grateful if you'd consider donating them. They can bring a lot of joy to another child while also giving the toys a second life.

If you're interested in donating or have any questions, please feel free to comment or send me a message.

Thank you so much for your kindness and support!

Parents of little ones, what do you actually wish someone had taught you?

Hi all,

I'm part of a small student-led initiative and right now we're trying to put together a series of workshops for parents of young kids (0-7ish), but before we lock in any topics, we want to actually hear from parents instead of guessing what you need.

So I'm here to ask, not to sell anything:

  • What's something about parenting a young child that you've struggled to find good guidance on?
  • Is there a topic you've Googled at 2am out of sheer confusion or worry?
  • Anything about your child's development, behaviour, screen time, sleep, food, milestones, etc. that you wish there was a proper session (not just random Instagram reels) on?
  • Or even something less "textbook" like managing your own patience, dealing with unsolicited advice from family, balancing work and parenting, etc.

Would genuinely appreciate even one-line answers. Trying to build something useful, not something that just looks good on paper.

Thank you in advance 🙏

would love some guidance

We're Neighbourhood, rethinking baby kits so toys don't get thrown away

Hi r/toys! I'm a student at SRCC working on a project I'd love your feedback on. We're building Aangan, a series of development-focused toy kits for babies 0–7 years, but with a core idea: every toy is redesigned so it keeps working as the child grows.

The problem we're solving:

Lovevery does incredible work on developmental research, but their toys are built for single-stage use. You buy a kit, baby outgrows it, the toys get donated or sit in a closet. It's not malicious — it's just how subscription toy models work.

We looked at our own homes and asked: what if nothing got thrown away?

How we're doing it differently:

Each toy has a removable connection point (velcro, snap, clip, cord hinge — never glued shut) and a planned second (and third) life. Examples:

  • Playgym: Adjustable-height crossbar with a reversible mat — when baby sits up, flip the mat to crawling-friendly patterns, lower the bar, it becomes a reading nook or curtain frame.
  • Grasp rings: Three graduated sizes that nest together. After the newborn stage, they become stacking rings, then bath toys, then a toss-and-catch set.
  • Flash cards: Double-sided. Newborn high-contrast pattern on one face, numbers/shapes on the other. Ring them as a toddler flip-book once you're done with the contrast cards.
  • Sensory mat: Reversible cover — high-contrast side flips to crawling patterns, then becomes a general floor mat.

We're also including something Lovevery doesn't: a dedicated handbook for parents, not just toy instructions. Because at 0–3 months especially, the toy is secondary to supporting whoever is holding the baby.

Why this matters to us specifically:

We're designing this in India, where "throw it away" isn't the cultural default — and where most parenting happens in multi-generational homes where toys get passed down. So we named each kit after spaces in an Indian home: Aanchal (fold of the sari), Godh (lap), Dahleez (threshold), Kadam (first step), and so on. It sounds small, but it changes how you think about the object.

What we're honestly not sure about yet:

  • Whether the redesign mechanism actually feels intuitive to parents or if it's too clever
  • Pricing — if we do this right, should it cost the same as Lovevery, less (because reuse), or more (because engineering)?
  • Whether we're overestimating how much parents actually want toys to stick around vs. just want them to work during one stage

What we'd love to hear:

Are we solving a real problem, or are we overthinking it? If you've used Lovevery, what would actually make you keep a toy past one stage? Would you actually reuse something designed to transform, or does redesign just add complexity?

Genuinely curious what this community thinks. We're early enough that real feedback changes the direction.
