New article in this series about the Billboard hits that were either No. 1 in sales or radio, but not the actual Hot 100. There are several hip-hop songs (or even hip-hop inspired) that were best-sellers but didn't make it to No. 1 on the Hot 100 - including songs by Biggie Smalls, Method Man, and even Brandy & Monica.
Much like with Kayla, I think Sam is unfairly vilified. So he had a lot of anger... Well yeah, no kidding? I would have a lot of pent-up resentment too if I grew up destitute and found out I could have been privileged instead but was denied the chance to. Plus, I don't think he always intended to do what he did in the end, he was driven to it because Bree and Andrew refused to accept him. Honestly, whenever I rewatch this storyline, I sympathise more with Sam than I do with those two. What Bree does when she gives him the "trust fund" check, where she's trying to get rid of him without actually saying that (at first, anyway), is cowardly and disrespectful. Then he says, "I'm part of the family" and she says, "Not really"... Oh, I would have smacked the red out of her scalp, Sam is a better man than me.
Love Bree though, what a queen.

I went through all of Billboard's sales and airplay charts from 1993 and wrote about the year's overlooked chart-toppers. I'd love to hear what other Billboard fans think.
