Separation Anxiety in a Senior Dog
Hi everyone, Im an owner to a 11 year old dachshund chihuahua terrier mix. He has been with me since I was 13, am now 23 and moved out for graduate school. I first moved without Renn and he didnt experience separation anxiety back at my parents house. After about 6 months my parents asked me to move him in with me so I did but every time I leave the apartment even for 5 minutes my dog experiences a lot of stress :( he has been living with me for about 2 months now
Talked to the vet and they said its likely best for him to move back to my parents house where he spent all 11 years of his life and they have another dog that he plays with.
Im wondering if anyone has any last-attempt advice to ease his stress when I leave the apartment? Ive tried lick pads with calming treats/pb we go on lots of walks during the day and Ive tried crate training but he pushed his face into the crate where he got a big bump in his nose from it.
He howls and barks a bit while im gone and mostly lays in front of the door but doesnt destroy anything. Though i did come back to a little throw up once :(
The plan is to move him out and this is likely his last week with me, I just wish I could explain it to him. I know he will be sad and confused for a couple weeks but Ill try to visit him at least monthly at my parents. I know hes happier there with a yard and his dog “brother” (not really related)
