My trip to OKW

My last post here was asking for what to do at Old Key West. Tonight my wife and I came back. So it was amazing. First thing, I wasn't prepared for how beautiful the pastels would be in person. The grounds were being kept immaculately. The variety of plant life and bodies of water really emphasized how relaxing the resort can be. My wife and I had a 1 bedroom villa. It was spacious with a jetted tub and porch to relax with. Resting on the porch was a great way to start and end the day.

The fried chicken at Olivia's was better than I expected...and I had some high expectations. The gravy that accompanied the chicken was also top notch. I also tried the keylime dole whip at Goods. Simply put I was knocked back by how great of a combination it was. At the Gurgling Suitcase, my wife and I tried the fried pickles and the bacon jam burger. A+ food and service all around.

We did try the boat ride to Disney Springs. A wonderful way to get from point A to point B. However, due to rain my wife and I found the bus to be faster to get back to the resort. Speaking of which the bus stops were located at 4 points in the resort and for some people it could be a bit of a hike, but so is the price for a secluded and quiet get away.

The main pool area was fun. I went down the water slide and tried the warm pool. It was relaxing. The sauna took a while to warm up but I still was able to get a good sweat in their.

Overall, I'd say this is a resort to go to even if you don't plan on spending too much time in the parks. It is a nice respite from the noise at the monorail, skyliner, and value resorts.

I do regret not taking the walking path to Disney Springs and not renting a bike from Hanks but between catching buses, being a foodie, and getting to the parks I just didn't manage my time efficiently enough to do those activities.

10 out of 10 would stay again.

Staying at OKW for the first time

As the title says I am staying at Old Key West for the first time. I told my wife I'd like to visit various DVC properties. She surprised me with a resort change today. While I appreciate the Saratoga Springs property and how it offers a peek of what the property in NY used to look like I am really excited to check off OKW from my list.

What are some of your favorite things to do at OKW?

My Aulani Stay

Okay so my wife, in-laws, and I stayed at Aulani on the island of Oahu.

A couple of things to note for those considering going.

  1. It is not as saturated with characters as other Disney properties. Yes, there are some character meet and greets but not like in Magic Kingdom.

  2. There is a lot more respect for the Hawaiian people that went into the hotel than one might expect.

  3. There is no current dining plan at the resort. This threw me for a loop but it didn't stop me from enjoying the restaurants there and with Costco being close by groceries were no problem.

That being said this property was amazing. Treat yourself to a massage at the spa there. The lazy river had a slide you can go down in and the food was amazing. I recommend trying the burger at Ulu café. The ukulele lessons were fun and shout out to Charlie for helping me with the g chord. If you do the make your own Mickey ears just make sure to pack them well. Mine broke in transit on the airplane. The beach was nicely done. A bit modified but not overly done. However, there are shells and rocks on the sand leading into the water.

Like most resorts there were kids but most were well behaved.

I enjoyed the Majestic Island Circle Tour to learn about some of the history of the island and Hawaii as a total. Good sites and good food.

I live on the east coast of the USA. Unfortunately there was no direct flight the day I set out so we had to take a flight to California and then a flight to Hawaii. Total air time was approximately 12.5 hours.

Overall I'd say the resort was more peaceful than the other Disney places I've been. If you have the time and money go and enjoy it
