Melatonin isn't touching my anxiety/depression insomnia. Is 6mg too much or should I try something else?

Hi everyone. I’m currently struggling with clinical depression and anxiety, and my sleep has completely fallen apart. Even when I’m exhausted, I can’t get my brain to shut off.

I’ve been taking 3mg melatonin tablets to try and force a reset, but it doesn’t seem to be working. It isn't helping me fall asleep, and I just wake up feeling more groggy and "heavy" the next day. I'm also starting to get very dark circles under my eyes.

I’m looking for some advice on a few things:

  1. Is 6mg of melatonin a "good" or effective dose for someone with high anxiety, or is it possible the dose is too high/low?

  2. For those with depression/anxiety, did melatonin fail you too? If so, what actually helped quiet your mind at night?

  3. Are there better alternatives to melatonin (like Magnesium or specific routines) that don't cause that next-day depression fog?

  4. Any tips for managing the physical "look" of exhaustion (dark circles) while I’m in the thick of this?

I’m feeling pretty desperate for a solid night's rest so I can actually have the energy to work on my mental health during the day. Thanks in advance.
