Longathroat lunchtime. Corn moimoi, rice, chicken and veggies.

Little bit of fried rice, corn moimoi (made with smoked Titus), grilled chicken, sautéed greens with fresh fish stew.

A Granny Smith apple (really one of the best apple varieties ever) for dessert- one bite for tax purposes while food was in the microwave.

Don’t come for me about the grilled chicken o. My husband is the griller and he burnt the chicken. But he’s handsome so it is even sweeter sef.

Best CME for psych?

Good online CME for psych? I was in a relatively resource rich area and most of my patients who had more than moderate depression and anxiety had psychiatric specialist care. Any great CME that has helped fill gaps for you?

Small wins

A few days ago, my non-verbal (has only a few single words, with receptive and expressive language delay) 5 year old took the vacuum cleaner by the handle, and “drove” it around the room. I think he made noises too. It was the first real example of function-related play, and the vacuum has become his favorite toy now. He’d usually just hold on to a car and inspect it rather than drive it around or make vroom noises, or hold a stuffed toy/put any loose parts in his mouth.

Yesterday we started potty training attempts again and he peed in the toilet for the first time.

Today he said “I want water” and “I want cereal” with prompts, after he first asked for “water” and “cereal”. He’d usually just make it to two-word phrases with heavy prompts.

I’m so glad.

Giselle and other people’s husbands

It’s a loudly spoken rule that the husbands should stay out of housewives business. The other way round is less talked about but housewives generally stay out of husbands business too. It always rubbed me the wrong way how Giselle finds a way to insult or offend someone else’s man.

Fresh mackerel stew

Served with hot rice. I didn’t post my plated portion because most of my rice was the semi-burnt bottom of the rice pot lol (which I loved btw).

Understanding

I have an almost 5 year old on the spectrum, nonverbal. He will say a few mostly single words like juice, hug, or water. I keep reading people say that nonverbal people with autism understand everything you say but they just don’t speak. That has not been our experience. My son has significant difficulty with receptive verbal communication too. He has started repeating the final words of sentences we say to him but understanding is obviously lacking. He performs very well when teaching can be done without verbal communication (show not tell) and generally loves to figure things out himself and problem solve. This has made potty training so hard for us.

Is it everyone’s experience that your kids understand everything but just don’t speak? He has had normal hearing tests and I know for sure he isn’t deaf.
