Found a number 5 for 14.50 at my local restore. The timing is actually really good for me because I'm currently prototyping replacement blades so it's nice having more planes to test the blades in . I don't necessarily need a number 5 as a user but knowing myself I'll probably get her nice and pretty and end up using it anyways lol.
Recently added liquid nitrogen cryogenic treatment to my heat-treat process and have been pleased with the results so far. It was more annoying to get the liquid nitrogen than getting dry ice but in actual use it was probably a bit easier .

Finished restoring a few antique tools over this past week and figured some people here might appreciate them.
The Dunlap carpenter’s hatchet was cleaned up, sharpened, and kept on its original handle.
Antique “Warranted Superior” 9 TPI crosscut saw with a Diston-style handle. The plate was cleaned and straightened, teeth were sharpened and set, and it’s cutting well now while still keeping a lot of its age and patina.
Also restored an old hand forged carving/hewing hatchet with a new offset hard maple handle. I offset the handle slightly to improve hand clearance during carving and hewing work. I tried to preserve the forged texture and pitting rather than over-cleaning it.
Also finished up a vintage Collins hatchet restoration recently.
Trying to focus on making these functional user tools while still preserving their age and character instead of polishing everything to death.
I posted them on antique tool brokers if anyone is interested in them . https://www.reddit.com/r/AntiqueToolBroker/s/EvvbkL4O3e
Finished restoring a few vintage hatchets recently and figured some people here might appreciate them.
First is an old hand forged carving/hewing hatchet rehung on a new offset hard maple handle. I offset the handle slightly to improve hand clearance and control during carving and hewing work. The head was cleaned and sharpened while intentionally preserving the forged texture, pitting, and age character.
Also restored a vintage Dunlap carpenter’s hatchet. Kept the original handle on this one and sharpened it up into a solid user-grade woodworking hatchet.
Last one is a vintage Collins hatchet restoration with a shou sugi handle and cleaned/sharpened head.
Trying to preserve age and character on these instead of over-polishing everything into mirror finishes.
They are available in my Etsy shop - https://robertsfinetools.etsy.com

This went a lot more smoothly than the first time . This time I deburred everything before putting into kiln and was not stingy this time with the heat treat foil. I also used acetone for dry ice bath instead of alcohol this time . The alcohol I used last time was only 70% so had a lot of ice form the acetone all stayed liquid which was nice . 61-63 hrc . O also I made a program on my kiln for tempering A-2 on my kiln so now which was a nice quality of life improvement vs using a toaster oven last time to temper.
Near term goals are to get set up to use liquid nitrogen instead of dry ice. Make a batch of 6 more marking knives and to make a plane Iron out of A-2.
