First Batch of modern replacement blades finished

Cryogenically treated plate quenched A2 hardened to 62 HRC, hand sharpened. 1/8 inch thick and 2 inch's wide . A bit over 7 and 1/32 inchs in length.

Tested fitted on number 4 and 5 lie Nielsen and wood river planes . I bet these would fit other brands, if anyone knows which I'd appreciate it. https://www.robertsfinetools.com

Worlds First MagnaMax woodworking tools. Just finished my first hand plane Iron batch!

Been working towards making MagnaMax tools for the past couple months . This metal came to market in May of this year. Made by the same metallurgist Dr. Larrin Thomas that made Magnacut. Similar qualities as Magnacut except it has been tested to have 40% longer edge retention , and has slightly less toughness. I think magnamaxs properties are better suited to woodworking tools than magnacut is. These irons are made to 64 HRC because that's the maximum hardness MagnaMax can have while still maintaining high toughness . I wrote a little article explaining my choices in more detail with references to Dr. Larrin Thomas's page . https://www.robertsfinetools.com/steel
Also wrote about the benefits of small batch heat treating and plate quenching over industrial gas quenches . Excited to finish these. 😁

Hand Plane Batch Finished

Just finished making a hand plane blade batch.

Steps I took to make them is

  1. Milling slot with milling machine and cleaning it up with files.

  2. Grinded the bevel and shape with belt grinder in annealed state

  3. Removed final burrs after machining and rough grinding with a file.

  4. Heat treated the blades in kiln with a 30 minute soak at 1750F.

  5. Quenched between thick aluminum plates

  6. Submerged in liquid nitrogen overnight

  7. Tempered the steel at 400F for two hours twice to increase toughness

  8. Used laser engraver to brand them

  9. Final sharpening done by hand on diamond stones and strolp.

  10. Tested the blades in an antique Stanley number 4 and 5.

HRC 61-63 cryogenically treated A2 steel

Rescued from Restore for 2 dollars and surprisingly been one of my most used tools lately.

Was rusty, dull and covered in flaking red paint when I got them . Been using them a lot so figured it could use a facelift.

Lucky Find Today

Found a number 5 for 14.50 at my local restore. The timing is actually really good for me because I'm currently prototyping replacement blades so it's nice having more planes to test the blades in . I don't necessarily need a number 5 as a user but knowing myself I'll probably get her nice and pretty and end up using it anyways lol.

A-2 Marking knives .

Recently added liquid nitrogen cryogenic treatment to my heat-treat process and have been pleased with the results so far. It was more annoying to get the liquid nitrogen than getting dry ice but in actual use it was probably a bit easier .

Finished Restoring Some Woodworking Tools this Week

Finished restoring a few antique tools over this past week and figured some people here might appreciate them.

The Dunlap carpenter’s hatchet was cleaned up, sharpened, and kept on its original handle.

Antique “Warranted Superior” 9 TPI crosscut saw with a Diston-style handle. The plate was cleaned and straightened, teeth were sharpened and set, and it’s cutting well now while still keeping a lot of its age and patina.

Also restored an old hand forged carving/hewing hatchet with a new offset hard maple handle. I offset the handle slightly to improve hand clearance during carving and hewing work. I tried to preserve the forged texture and pitting rather than over-cleaning it.

Also finished up a vintage Collins hatchet restoration recently.

Trying to focus on making these functional user tools while still preserving their age and character instead of polishing everything to death.

I posted them on antique tool brokers if anyone is interested in them . https://www.reddit.com/r/AntiqueToolBroker/s/EvvbkL4O3e

Finished restoring a few vintage carving and hewing hatchets

Finished restoring a few vintage hatchets recently and figured some people here might appreciate them.

First is an old hand forged carving/hewing hatchet rehung on a new offset hard maple handle. I offset the handle slightly to improve hand clearance and control during carving and hewing work. The head was cleaned and sharpened while intentionally preserving the forged texture, pitting, and age character.

Also restored a vintage Dunlap carpenter’s hatchet. Kept the original handle on this one and sharpened it up into a solid user-grade woodworking hatchet.

Last one is a vintage Collins hatchet restoration with a shou sugi handle and cleaned/sharpened head.

Trying to preserve age and character on these instead of over-polishing everything into mirror finishes.

They are available in my Etsy shop - https://robertsfinetools.etsy.com
