I recently chose to repair my steering rack instead of replacing it at an official Bosch-authorized service center. The Workshop mostly worked in Germany cars and seemed very experienced, so I was reasonably confident about the quality of the work. I had also visited this workshop before for an ABS sensor replacement and had a good experience.

Vehicle Details

• Car: Volkswagen Polo Highline Plus 1.0 TSI MT
• Model Year: 2021
• Current Odometer: 43,400 km
• Ownership: Second owner (purchased at 39,100 km in May 2025)

Background

The car had a slight play in the steering when I bought it. During a service center visit in June 2025, I was informed that the steering rack would likely need replacement within about a year. However, the replacement cost was quite high, so I decided to explore the repair route instead.

Repair Details

• Steering rack repair cost: ₹9,139
• Quoted replacement cost for the worn component: ₹5,600 extra. The workshop said a ball joint/bushing-type component inside the rack had wear. Instead of replacing it, they adjusted/torqued it to remove the play.
• According to them, this fix should last around 1 year or 10,000–20,000 km, after which the component may need replacement.
• After the repair, the steering feels solid and tight, with no noticeable play.

Now I'm wondering:

• Was it ultimately worth it compared to a full replacement?

Make sure you have a proper light source, like a monitor light bar or desk lamp. The forged carbon texture is only really visible when light reflects off the keycaps properly. Otherwise, they can look plain in normal lighting.
