National Wrestling League - Newcastle 9th August

So NWL (youtube) held their first event in Newcastle last night and it was pretty good fun. I won't discuss the matches because I believe the intent is for them to be published to the Youtube Channel as a show so I'm not sure how the spoiler rules apply.

What worked.

  • The 15 minute, multi-fall format was really interesting. With the time ticking down in both halves it gave a nice way to create tension.
  • High production values. Lots of little touches made the event feel much more than the sort of community centre gym local production wrestling I'm used to. I particularly enjoyed the inflatable entrance way.
  • They've clearly hit the parents and kids market. The number of 5-12 year old's in the building on a Sunday night took me by surprise. And the kids really seemed to be enjoying it.
  • The regional team format brought some instant heat to matches that otherwise wouldn't have had any.
  • Tim Strange. First time seeing him and would recommend.
  • Loved seeing the special guest Owner and the special guest wrestler.
  • Banging Entrance music for the teams.

What I'm less sure on

  • The flipside of the regional teams is that it can split the crowd loyalties from the action in the ring. Someone for the London team in Newcastle can work as babyface as they want but the crowd's not going to be behind them.
  • The other downside of the regional teams is the crowd is behind "The Hitmen" or "Yorkshire" rather than the wrestler's themselves. This was added to by the match graphics and audio being the Teams so the names of the wrestlers aren't displayed and often the ring announcement was difficult to hear over the entrance music.
  • At the Vertu Arena there were screens on three walls with the score and time but not on the West wall. As someone in the East Stand this was a little annoying to have to look away from the match to check the clock.
  • A really petty one. On the match display, between the scores was a ":" instead of a "-" and because the whole score was centred rather than the ":" being fixed to the centre at "1 : 0" or "2 : 1" then colon wasn't on the centre line because of the font width.

Overall I'm looking forward to the league taking off. I think it could be an interesting gimmick to run over a whole season. And there's room to throw in friendlies that don't follow the 15 minute time limit rules if that becomes too much of a limitation.

Battery Settings for Heat Pump tariff

Planning for Winter. We're an electric only household generating far more electricity than we use until we get an EV. Until about October we won't be importing any electricity.

However our midwinter daily usage is significantly more than battery + midwinter generation. Our heat pump tariff gives us "cheap" electricity 4AM to 7AM and 1PM to 4PM.

The easy thing to do would be set the battery to charge from grid in those two windows and run the heat pump and house off that as soon as we turn the heating on, or as soon as we get close to the battery not lasting overnight.

But given our import is 0.5p more than our export in the cheap periods I like to import as little electricity as possible. Is there a simple way to optimise my imports in winter? I don't think the 5-10p a day I'd save is worth manually setting the battery charge rates every week.

I'm on FoxESS KH10 and EP12.

Two FoxESS management questions

Set up

  • 28 JA Solar 500W panels, 4 strings of 7, 2 east facing, 2 west facing.
  • FoxESS KH10 inverter
  • FoxESS EP12+ Battery

First. Due to the large array and good weather, my battery hasn't been below 40% in about 3 weeks. Should I be occasionally draining it to 10% or is it best to just let it run constantly high over summer? If so, how/when should I do it?

Second, My inverter seems to balance load by drawing small amounts of power from the grid even when there's battery power, 10 to 20W or so, less than 1kWh per week. I know it's not a big deal but is there any way to get it to favour drawing from the full battery and solar rather than doing some unnecessary import.

Programming Dragonhide Belt into VTT

I have a player who is multiclassed Monk/Druid.

I want to give them a +1 dragonhide belt. Which would give a bonus to their Ki save DCs. Since both Ki and Druid Spell save DC's are detrmined by wisdom I'm not sure how to give them the bonus.

Do I need to add it to specific features (It only affects Arms of the Astral & Stunning Strike) rather than as an effect of the item in general?

Towel Rails on DHW Primary loop

I had an ASHP installed back at the start of April. Last night we turned the Hot Water up because we had guests staying and noticed.

  1. The Boiler didn't get over 54.4C at any point
  2. The ASHP ran non-stop overnight.
  3. The towel rails in the en suite and bathroom were burning hot.

Is it common for the Hot Water tank loop to pass through the towel rails?
Is it something I should have expected the installers to notice or mention when they were installing the system?
Do I need to get it replumbed somehow?
Can I turn the valves down on the towel rails over summer so the hot water loop doesn't have to heat the bathroom?

This was our first April with the panels installed and our 14kWp 50% east / 50% west array has performed so far above our pre-installation projections I'm shocked.

We've generated 1.66MWh from a projection of 1.25MWh. Our projected peak genration in April was 75.0kWh (peaks are listed as 1 day in 20 years) but we did 86.5kWh today and had several days in the mid to high 70s)

So was this just a particularly good year or were our projections excessivley conservative?

I have a one shot coming up and we've been given pregen characters for it. It's been a long time since I've played a paladin and this one has a hexblade dip so I'm not really sure how to make the most of it.

STR 15, Dex 8, Con 14, Wis 10, int 8, Cha 20
Custom Lineage (Small)
Feats: Fey Touched (Gift of Alacrity), Polearm Master
Paladin 8 (Watchers) Fighting Style: Dueling
Warlock 2 (Hexblade) Invocations: Agonising Blast, Repelling Blast

Recommended Spells Paladin: L1 Alarm, bless, Command, Detect Magic, Shield of Faith, Wrathful Smite L2 Aid, Branding Smite, Find Steed, Lesser REstoration, Locate Object, Moonbeam, See Invisibility

Warlock: Cantrip: Eldritch Blast, Mind Sliver
L1: Shield, Protection from Evil and Good, Unseen Servant

Feat: Gift of Alacrity, Misty Step.

Items:
Staff of Fate: (+3 to ATK/DAM, 6 charges of +1d4 to allies)
Shield of Missile Attraction (+2 Shield, reaction to impose on ranged attacks against Allies)
Mariner's Plate Armour
+1 Amulet of the devout

So I can see that I'm wielding a staff and shield for melee and primarily using Eldritch Blast for ranged attacks. Staying close to my allies before the fight to boost their initiative and maybe close during for aura of protection and the Shield of MA.

But am I saving spells for Smiting? Or should I be using the smite spells? Or am I more of an eldritch blaster with occasional melee?
