Tried out polychromos for this one instead of my usual prismacolors!

Tried out polychromos for this one instead of my usual prismacolors!

Wow what a learning curve. My hand is now a claw and my wrist hurts but I really liked them! Anyway, here’s a barred owl to add to my bird collection. Polychromos on Strathmore 400 toned gray paper.

Artist looking for reference photos

Edit: thank you everyone for sharing your beautiful photos! I’ve got some great photos to work with and I am so appreciative! I will share the finished piece when it’s done. Yall are the best!

Hi! I am an artist and I’m seeking reference photos of female Muscovy ducks for a project. I’m not sure if it’s allowed to ask for this but if any of you have cool photos of them that you would be willing to share and give me permission to use in my art, I would be super grateful. I would be happy to share the finished piece via digital scan when it’s done.

An indigo bunting

Did you know that male indigo buntings don’t actually have any blue pigment in their feathers? Anyway, this one does have blue pigment because I drew it with prismacolor pencils. Paper is Strathmore 400 toned gray.

A sassy blue heron

I kind of did a speed run on this one but I like how he turned out. On to the next bird!

Rose breasted grosbeak

I’m still on a bird kick so here is this little cutie. Prismacolor pencils on Strathmore 400 toned gray.

Another bird in my bird series, the belted kingfisher.

I love how punk rock these guys look.

Drew this as a gift for someone that hunts these beautiful birds. It’s a ruffed grouse.

This was the most challenging bird I’ve done yet. Lots of textures that felt kind of impossible at first but I kept going and I’m pleased with the result. There are some areas that I wish I could have done better but I didn’t want to overwork it.

Finished up this kitty last night.

Prismacolor premiers on toned gray paper.
It was a challenge, cats are all shadows and curves.

To the quilter in this sub who gently bullied me into hand sewing my binding, thank you!

Made this baby quilt and recalled when I was frustrated with machine binding during my last quilt, one of you gently (and kindly) bullied me to consider hand sewing the binding. I hate to say it, but wow the results are night and day. Thank you! Whoever you are!

Continuing to learn this medium.

I relied heavily on a white posca pen to get the fur to look fluffy. My main medium is embroidery and I have an embroidery commission I need to get back to but I can’t stop playing around with colored pencils.

This is a new medium for me, I have a question about light values.

I’m a beginner with colored pencils, I am more used to regular pencils and paint so please forgive me if this is a dumb question. I have a set of prismacolor premier pencils and the lighter colors don’t seem to provide a lot of pigment, the light areas of this drawing were done using mostly negative space and the white pencil seems to be great for blending but not adding light where I need it. Is there a specific kind of colored pencil that can help me with adding lighter values?
