2-Month Update: Verteporfin Trial on Leg Scar Excision with Dr. Bloxham (New York) Baby hairs and melanin returning

Here is my 2-month update on the Verteporfin trial for a body scar. The procedure was a scar excision (left completely unsutured) performed by Dr. Bloxham in New York, using a 3 mg/ml dose of Verteporfin.

What happened so far:

Delayed Healing: We noticed a significant slowdown in the healing process caused by the Verteporfin, which was expected.

Suboptimal Aftercare: Unfortunately, the wound care wasn't perfect. A thick scab was allowed to form, and the area was accidentally exposed to direct heat sources, which might have compromised the final result.

Current Observations (2 Months In):

Baby Hairs: We are seeing brand new baby hair growing right in the middle of the wound. This is huge, as hair follicle regeneration is impossible in normal, fibrous scar tissue.

Repigmentation: The tissue seems to be regaining melanin. It used to be completely white and featureless, but now the color is blending back in.

Our Take & Expectations:

We likely won't get a 100% "scarless" result due to the lack of sutures and the aftercare mishaps. Instead, it looks like it will be a hybrid of fibrous tissue and healthy skin. However, the hair growth is an incredibly positive and encouraging sign of regeneration.

Next Steps:

We plan to run more trials in the future using the same dose (3 mg/ml) or slightly lower on other body scars. Crucially, we will use sutures next time, as we noticed the outer edges of this wound—where the tension was lower—are healing almost completely scarless.

IF YOU ARE FROM NY AND WANT TO CONTRIBUTE DR BLOXHAM IS SEEKING NEW PATIENTS TO TREAT THEIR BODY SCARS.
