Speed camera fine collection

Speed camera fine collection

The speed cameras have been running for a while.

Is there any public information available for how much has been collected? If the fines were enforced, you would think it would be a decent amount of revenue.

Also according to the website, there's greatly reduced fines for lower income.

My opinion is maybe the lower speed infractions could be reduced but if you're way over the speed limit? Just because your income is lower shouldn't mean you can speed for a cheaper rate.

Your thoughts on either of these?

Oak Knoll Development by Freehold Communities

I've been waiting for the oak knoll development for over twenty years.

Looks like Freehold Communities taking over project management in 2025 was the last major change.

Anyone else been waiting for this development to be completed? Any updates you've heard?

Berkeley Bowl versus, Farmer Joe's or Monterey Market

Sorry to bend the rules since two of the three markets are in Berkeley.

Having said that, I frequent Berkeley Bowl weekly for my produce and bulk goods.

Is there anything I'm missing by not shopping at Monterey Market or Farmer Joe's?

Anything that they carry, that isn't at Berkeley Bowl or at a better quality/price?

Strong Vietnamese coffee recommendations

I finally tried the latte syndrome pop up that shows up at Mẹ Và Con Vietnamese Kitchen on Thursday mornings.

Pretty decent Vietnamese coffee for around $8. It was pretty strong (and sweet) so it made me wonder who else serves this type of drink?

I remember the drip with condensed milk was pretty common in Vietnamese restaurants in the 90s. Now most of the places serve it already made.

Looking for strong!

Your one go to dish when asked for recommendations

You're asked to recommend one favorite dish from an Oakland restaurant.

What restaurant, what dish and why?

For me it would be Nam Khao from Vientiane Cafe. It's a fairly unique dish for a fair price. Also something I'm not likely to replicate at home.

Your choice?

Street vendor recommendations

I've eaten at many food trucks but have not purchased food from Street vendors.

Do you frequent them often?

If so, are there things I should be looking for or avoiding?

How often can you NOT find a recipe ingredient?

We have so many ethnic grocery stores as well as Farmer Joes and nearby Berkeley Bowl.

So what's that ingredient you haven't been able to purchase here?

Maybe someone can help you find it!

Oakland compliment sandwich thread

Let's give Oakland some healthy respect.

Please provide a reason for loving Oakland, an area it can improve and another reason to love Oakland.

Compliment sandwiches are a nice way to provide critical feedback.

Bonus points if you still to a general area (food, culture, nature, etc).

Please stick with the rules. An insult and two backhanded compliments does not match the intention of this post.

How does diversity factor in your reason for living in Oakland?

I've lived in Oakland over 25 years.

Diversity is a secret sauce here that can enthrall as much as frustrate me.

I recognize this fact when I'm away for over a week.

Where's my variety of food? When I look at a crowd, why is it a monoculture? Those are my thoughts in Midwest cities but also some peninsula or north bay cities.

So where does diversity factor in when you think about why you choose to live in Oakland?

Note - Oakland residents/respecters only. Negative or unhelpful comments will be flagged.

Chinese roasted chicken stuffed with sticky rice

Any place in Oakland that serves this dish?

Usually it's a whole deboned or partially deboned chicken that's roasted with sticky rice.

Golden Horse in San Francisco serves a great version but haven't seen in the East Bay.

TIA!

Cleaning up our neighborhoods - Skyline Blvd

Unusual tactic to put up a makeshift billboard but I'll take it.

Council member ken Houston is showing he's serious about cleaning up our streets.

There's been a constant barrage of dumping on Skyline Blvd between Grass Valley Road and Keller Ave. Glad he and Kevin Jenkins are trying to address the dumping issues in Oakland.

Oakland pride - what do we excel in over the city by the bay?

Was reading another post about how much better the Oakland Zoo is over the SF Zoo.

No duh!

What else do we shine over that other city across the bay?

Oakland Emergency Response and Safety

I was in a nearby city today running some errands.

There was an erratic male talking to himself and getting into people's personal spaces. I was hoping he would leave soon but he continued to walk around.

With my spidey senses tingling, I decided to call 911. Someone picked up immediately and I described the situation. I was as much concerned for my safety as for others. I also felt it wasn't safe for this man himself to be on the street.

They were very polite and said they would send someone out.

My point is that outside of Oakland, I feel a hidden safety net that is available in unsafe situations. I feel that if the police were called, they would take action.

In contrast, OPD does not seem to be here to protect me. I know there's a ton of other crime in Oakland, so how would my issue get prioritized (or not)?

Your thoughts on this?

Police dispatch time and 911. The median police response time for life threatening violence is nine minutes.

This article is very telling including the average answering time for a call to 911 is almost a minute.

The fact that you could be in a life threatening situation and OPD will not respond for nine minutes is awesome in the worst way possible.

Not to be sensational but reading the numbers shows how far we need to go to become even an average law enforced city.

Do you remember when Oakland was a major manufacturer of snack foods?

Because Oakland was a major port city and had easy access to raw materials, we were also a large food processing center.

Brands like Mother's Cookies, Sunshine Biscuit, Granny Goose, CornNuts, Shredded Wheat and even Jelly Belly beans were produced locally in Oakland.

Do you remember that era or hearing stories from friends or relatives?

It's nostalgic and a bit sad to think of the products we used to manufacture in Oakland that are now just memories.
