Mossberg 940 SPX and Self Contained Thrower

Mossberg 940 SPX and Self Contained Thrower

Mossberg 940 SPX, Holosun 507K, Surefire M640DF, Magpul sling and a modified choke. Also some B’s Dummys to try and suck less at twin/quad loading.

I’m more proud of what’s behind it. It’s a Champion Wheelybird with wobble attachment that I modified to be self contained. A lithium battery and its charger ride onboard. The thrower can’t shake itself away from its power source in the middle of shooting.

Despite the battery’s small size I’ve done two consecutive trips on a single charge (on accident). My usual ritual is just to plug it in to the wall the night before each trip.

Bought a KUNA

I wanted a family friendly alternative to my ARs and 9mm handguns. On family shooting trips, my elderly parents and daughter struggle to shoot those without help loading/charging. Ambi was also a priority because they are all right handed and I am wrong handed.

- To keep the front end light the suppressor is titanium (Liberty Infiniti X). I added a tri-lug adapter for quick install/removal. The old BBQ mitts in the range bag also assist with this

- Streamlight TLR-7X on a Magpul cantilever mount provides enough light for indoor use while keeping it lightweight. The mount gets the light away from your knuckles and minimizes suppressor shadow

- Holosun ARO MRS is in an American Defense low mount to co-witness with the factory irons

- HB Industries 1913 stock adapter adds a little durability. More importantly, it provides an ambidextrous rear sling point

- Magpul MS4 sling in single point configuration. Not really a single point sling fan but there isn’t much room for a forward two point sling mount

A little less than 500rds of 147gr subs through it with no malfunctions so far. It draws onlookers at the range because of how quiet it is. Subs under the indoor range lights are visible in flight like copper color tracers.

I think it will need some love soon though as the non-flow suppressor sends a lot of fouling back into the action/mags.

WSM More Repeatable Temps

Been doing this for a number of years, figured it might help folks here struggling with temps that still manipulate dampers rather than thermostats. Try using an allen wrench as a gauge to set your intake damper openings more consistently.

I started small and increased the allen wrench size until dampers were open enough to maintain the temperatures I’m looking for.

This gives me consistent temps 225-240 degrees top grate temperature for the duration of a load of coals year round here in AZ. I’ve kept it the same for over a decade now.

WSM 22 (no modifications):
- 25 lit briquets added to full charcoal ring of Kingsford blue bag
- 3-4 Western BBQ wood chunks
- 7/32” (5.5mm) for all three intake openings
- Fully open exhaust vent

I’m sure that inconsistencies in smoker manufacturing and different charcoal will yield different wrench sizes for others. And this temperature range is probably not tight enough tolerance for competition. But it should be helpful for struggling DIYers.
