Crackling noise from new PC build. Not sure if it is GPU, PSU, or audio. How do I diagnose this?

What in the seven hells is that crackling noise coming from my PC.

I just upgraded from an 8 year old build that never gave me a single problem. Not one blue screen, not one weird noise, not one headache. Eight years. Ran it until the storage was literally dying and it became unbearably slow for work. I finally upgraded to a brand new build, not even a month old, and it is already stressing me out more than the old one ever did. This is not the energy I was expecting.

Old build for context

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2600
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 6GB
  • RAM: 16GB
  • SSD: 256GB Samsung 860 EVO
  • Motherboard: Gigabyte B450 Aorus Elite

Seven to eight years. Zero crackling. Zero drama. Retired peacefully.

New build, less than a month old

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D 8C/16T 96MB 120W AM5
  • GPU: MSI RTX 5070 Ti Gaming Trio OC
  • Motherboard: MSI MAG X870E Tomahawk WiFi, AM5, ATX
  • RAM: G.Skill Trident Z5 RGB 48GB DDR5 8000 CL40-48 1.35v
  • Case: Lian Li Vector V100R Black
  • CPU Cooler: Arctic Liquid Freezer 3 360 Pro aRGB AIO 360mm
  • Case Fans: Arctic Cooling P12 Pro aRGB Black 3-pack (included with cooler)
  • PSU: Corsair RM1000e 1000W Gold Full Modular ATX3.1 PCIe 5.1
  • SSD: Samsung 990 Pro 4TB NVMe
  • HDD: WD Red Plus 10TB NAS

The issue

There is a crackling noise coming from somewhere in the build. I am not 100 percent sure if it is coming from the speakers, the GPU, the PSU, or something else entirely. It happens during use and I cannot pinpoint the exact source yet.

I want to ask a few things:

  • What are the most common causes of crackling noise in a build like this?
  • Is this likely an audio driver issue, a coil whine from the GPU or PSU, or something more concerning?
  • How do I actually isolate where it is coming from?
  • Is this something I should be worried about given the hardware is brand new, or is it relatively normal for a new build to settle?
  • What are the steps I should take to diagnose and fix this before it becomes a bigger problem?

My old PC ran for 8 years without making a single weird noise. This one is not even 30 days old and already doing this. Modern PC's stress me so much.

Any help is genuinely appreciated.

Just finished a build around a 9800X3D and RTX 5070 Ti. Work remotely for about 16 hours a day so screen real estate honestly matters more to me than chasing high refresh rates.

I mostly play Total War, Shogun 2, Rome II, Three Kingdoms, and the rest of the series. On the FPS side I still play Fortnite here and there, clocked hundreds of hours in Apex a few years back, dabbled in Valorant and Marvel Rivals. FPS is not really my thing anymore though, barely have time and when I do sit down strategy is just way more satisfying after a long work day.

Really looking forward to Total War: Warhammer 40k, Game of Thrones: War for Westeros, and Dawn of War IV. Also planning to grab Helldivers II and Warhammer 40k: Space Marine II when they go on sale.

Here is where I am coming from with monitors:

  • AOC G2590PX — 25 inch, 144Hz, 1ms, FreeSync. It is on a monitor arm now which I just got recently and honestly it is one of the best things I have done for my desk setup, so much freed up space. This one is VESA compatible so no issues there.
  • N-Vision — 27 inch, 60Hz, no sync, nothing. The most basic monitor you can imagine. The stand is fixed too, you cannot even remove it, which means no monitor arm for this one. I actually had to buy a separate PC tabletop riser just to get it to a decent height because it angles downward otherwise. It is functional but it is a pain. Haha.

So right now I am on a dual setup with both of them. Neither of them are doing justice to an RTX 5070 Ti and 9800X3D. That is the honest situation.

I am leaning toward 32 to 34 inches mostly because of work, 16 hours a day in front of a screen means more real estate would genuinely help. But I am also open to being told a really good 27 inch is the smarter call if the value argument is there. Not married to a size, just want the right answer.

Budget wise, just going to be upfront since I know someone will ask. I just upgraded my whole PC so funds are tight right now. I would rather not go past PHP 50,000 (~$800 USD) on a monitor. That said if someone recommends something slightly above that and the value genuinely makes sense for what I described, I am willing to save a few extra months and just get the right one. I am staring at this thing for 16 hours a day so I do not want to cheap out, but I also need to be realistic about where I am right now. Drop your recommendation and if it goes a bit over, tell me why it is worth it and I will consider it.

Follow-up post. Shop visit is this weekend, having the build done in-store, not sourcing parts myself.

I am a remote Virtual Assistant, Executive Assistance, Operations, Project Management. Workday: 120 to 200 tabs, a dozen active apps, meetings back to back. CPU and RAM carry the load. Goal is a 5 to 10 year build with future plans for DaVinci Resolve and Premiere Pro.

Gaming

  • Total War: Warhammer III, Three Kingdoms, Shogun, Medieval, full series
  • Upcoming titles I am preparing for: Total War: Warhammer 40,000 and Dawn of War IV. FOR THE EMPEROR! These are going to be brutal on hardware. The Blood Ravens will have their glory.
  • Helldivers II, Age of Darkness, Arc Raiders, Fortnite, Apex Legends

What I am replacing after 7+ years and zero issues

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2600
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 6GB
  • RAM: 16GB
  • SSD: 256GB Samsung 860 EVO, 26GB free after cleanups and forced deletions
  • HDD: 8TB WD, two 4TB partitions. Disk D: 649GB free. Disk E: 4.13GB free. Yes, 4.13.
  • Motherboard: Gigabyte B450 Aorus Elite

Built 2018-2019. Zero headaches for 7+ years. That is the standard the new build has to match.

New build base, same across both options. Having this built in-shop, not buying parts separately.

  • GPU: MSI RTX 5070 Ti Gaming Trio OC
  • Motherboard: Gigabyte X870 Gaming WiFi6, AM5, ATX
  • RAM: Corsair Dominator Titanium 64GB DDR5 6000 CL30
  • PSU: Corsair RM1000x Shift 1000W Gold Full Modular
  • Case: Lian Li Vector V100R Black
  • Case Fans: Arctic Cooling P12 Pro aRGB Black 3-pack
  • HDD: Seagate IronWolf 12TB NAS
  • CPU Cooler: Corsair RM1000x Shift 1000watts PSU, gold
  • Thermal Paste: TBD

The two builds. Only CPU and SSD differ. Photo attached, neon highlights show exactly what changes.

Build A, PHP 251,715 (~$4,266)

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D, 8C/16T, 96MB cache, 120W
  • SSD: Samsung 990 Pro 4TB NVMe Gen 4 (R/W: 7,450/6,900)

Build B, PHP 273,960 (~$4,643)

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D, 16C/32T, 128MB cache, 170W
  • SSD: Samsung 9100 Pro 4TB NVMe PCIe 5.0 Gen 5 (R/W: 14,800/13,400)

Difference: PHP 22,245 (~$377)

What I need your honest take on

  • 9800X3D vs 9950X3D: What is the real-world difference for my use case? Is 9950X3D worth it or is 9800X3D more than enough? Is the 9900X3D a smarter middle ground?
  • Samsung 990 Pro vs 9100 Pro Gen 5: In actual day-to-day use will I feel the difference? For a 5 to 10 year build does Gen 5 future-proof enough to justify the cost or is Gen 4 perfectly fine?
  • Motherboard: Currently on the Gigabyte X870 Gaming WiFi6. Also considering the X870E. Worth the upgrade for my setup or is X870 already enough?
  • Thermal Paste: The shop has Arctic MX-6 available. MX-7 exists but is rare in my area. Which would you go with or is there something better I should ask them to source?

I need someone to talk me down

Already over budget. Original target was $4,000 to $4,200. I walk into shops and go "you know what, forget it, let's get the best." My 2018 build happened that way, lasted 8 years, and I keep using that as my reason. I am not rich. I just have terrible impulse control with PC parts. If Build A is the right call, make the case. Clearly. Before Saturday.

P.S. Posted earlier this week for case, cooler, and fan recs. Back today with the final check before shop day this weekend. Let's go.
