Building my first PC, but had some doubts about some of my part choices and cooling

I've been using a gaming laptop for a few years now after making the jump from console and with some money coming in I wanted to build a proper desktop that works as both a workstation and gaming PC. As a note, I live in Argentina so availability of parts is a factor and so will probably have to order parts internationally.

Parts (PC Part Picker Link):

  • CPU: Ryzen 7 7800X3D
  • GPU: Gigabyte OC Radeon RX 9060 XT (16GB)
  • CPU Cooler: Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 SE
  • RAM: 2 X 8GB DDR5 (Will grab whatever is available with at least 5200 MHz)
  • Storage: Samsung 990 EVO Plus 1TB
  • Motherboard: ASRock B650 Steel Legend ATX AM5
  • PSU: Corsair RM750x 2024 (750W)
  • Case: Fractal Design North Mid Tower (Includes two 140mm case fans)
  • Extra Case Fans: 2 Noctua NF-A14x25 G2 PWM Sx2-PP 140mm

Limitations:

Aesthetics are not very relevant to me, especially since I'm not using a fish tank case, but would prefer no RGB.

I want something capable of running games at 1440p but would prefer increasing graphics settings over jumping above 60 FPS. My idea is to build something that currently runs most games with reasonable requirements so that it will hold up at least for a while even if I have to downgrade to 1080p.

In terms of peripherals, all I really need is 2 ports for monitors, 2 USB-A ports, 1 USB-C port, and 1 USB-A/USB-C port to connect everything I need.

My budget is fairly flexible, but I'd prefer to keep spending below $2000 before taxes and other costs at the most.

Main Questions:

  1. Is the cooler I picked and the 4 total case fans (2 front intake + 2 top exhaust) good enough to keep temps steady? After using a gaming laptop I'm pretty worried about temps.
  2. Are there any important parts I'm missing for the PC itself?
  3. Is the PSU good enough? I heard that 50% over expected average consumption is ideal so I tried to find a good model at 750.
  4. Is the motherboard way overkill? The motherboards all seemed a bit pricy, and the specs were all gibberish to me so honestly I just picked something highly rated.
  5. What's a solid RAM speed for the build? Currently the PC Part Picker list has DDR5-6000 RAM because I don't really know what the sweet spot is.
  6. Is looking for a less powerful but cheaper NVIDIA GPU better? I picked a 9060XT because it was cheaper than NVIDIA cards that performed similarly on comparison tests, but I was wondering if NVIDIA better because of features like DLSS, improving performance and saving money in the budget.

I'd appreciate advice on anything I overlooked while picking out the parts, or any ways to help bring down the cost a bit.

RM1000x SHIFT + 90° PCIe5 cable compatibility with AORUS RTX 5080 MASTER

Hi,

I’m planning a build with the following components:

  • Corsair RM1000x SHIFT
  • Gigabyte B850 AORUS STEALTH ICE (back-connect motherboard)
  • Gigabyte AORUS RTX 5080 MASTER 16G
  • be quiet! Light Base 600 DX (horizontal layout)

I’m considering using the Corsair GPU 90° PCIe5 Type-5 Style B 12V-2x6 650mm 600W cable.

I have a few questions regarding compatibility and clearance:

  1. Has this 90° cable been tested with the recessed 12V-2x6 connector on the Gigabyte AORUS RTX 5080 MASTER 16G? Will the connector fully seat and click into the GPU without clearance issues?
  2. Is the connector head slim enough for deeply recessed Gigabyte GPU power connectors? I’m concerned about thick angled connector housings preventing full insertion.
  3. Will the RM1000x SHIFT fit well in the Light Base 600 DX with enough clearance for:
  • proper airflow,
  • access to the back-connect motherboard connectors,
  • and comfortable cable routing behind the motherboard tray?

Thanks!

Is this a fair deal?

So I’ve been trying to get some to trade a prebuilt Lego Millennium Falcon (75192) with everything that originally came with the set. Plus cash. He wants 500 and I wanted 300, he’s trying to get us to settle on 400. But I dunno if it’s worth it.

Beginner building a PC for AI/MI- opinion on what I customised?

Me and my partner are beginners and would like to invest in our first custom PC for the purposes of AI and machine learning. I have built this PC with AWD (I have used other websites for comparison but not all are user friendly):

https://www.awd-it.co.uk/awd-it-vector-v100-ddr5-amd-ryzen-5-8400f-six-core-nvidia-rtx-5060-8gb-desktop-pc-for-gaming.html?config=29766-653776,29769-614787,29793-575986,29796-576556,29799-597887,29802-332694,29808-588927,29811-332916,29814-332952,29817-332970,29820-333030,29823-333045,29826-333066,29829-333081,29832-333117,29835-333234,29838-333249,47494-509734,48447-653692,55220-577028,58622-625220,59544-619464.

I am now satisfied with this build but I wanted to get some advice from the community before purchasing. FYI- the graphics card will not be what is selected as I will pay an additional £125 to upgrade to the Palit 16GB 5060 Ti Infinity 3. Our non-negotiables were 32gb RAM, 12+gb graphics card, 1TB storage, CPU that is minimum 8 core/16 thread. Are we missing anything, should we be considering something else, is the price worth the build? Thanks in advance

Not showing graphics card

I bought a used prebuilt from someone the graphics card wasn’t showing up in device manager so I bought a new graphics card and put it in and it’s still not showing up. I change settings in the bios. I updated Windows. Yes, the card is seated. Yes the card has power. I just hit a wall and I don’t know where to go from here aside from updating the bios.

First ever PC build sanity check: white RGB RTS/emulation build, any blind spots?

Hi all,

First ever PC build and I’d appreciate a quick sanity check before ordering. Main use: RTS/strategy games, StarCraft II, future Dawn of War/Warhammer RTS, emulation/ROM hacks, modding tools, trading/charting and general Windows tinkering. I have a PS5 for AAA games, so this is mainly a strategy/emulation PC. Using an ultrawide monitor.

Parts list:
CPU: Ryzen 7 9800X3D
Cooler: Arctic Liquid Freezer III Pro A-RGB White 240mm AIO
Motherboard: ASUS ROG Strix B850-A Gaming WiFi
RAM: TeamGroup Delta RGB 32GB 2x16GB DDR5 6000 CL30 White
GPU: ASUS RTX 5070 Ti TUF Gaming OC White 16GB
OS drive: Kingston NV3 500GB NVMe
Games/storage: Lexar NM790 2TB NVMe
PSU: NZXT C850 850W Gold ATX 3.1 White
Case: Lian Li O11 Vision Compact White
Bottom fans: 3 x Arctic P12 Pro Reverse A-RGB White
Rear fans: 2 x Arctic P12 Pro A-RGB White
OS: Windows 11 Home

Planned airflow:
Side 240mm AIO as intake
Bottom 3 reverse fans as intake
Rear 2 standard fans as exhaust
Top empty/glass

Main questions:
Any compatibility or clearance issues?
Is the 240mm AIO enough for the 9800X3D?
Does the airflow plan make sense?
Do I need a fan/RGB hub, or can the Arctic fans daisy-chain?
Any concern using cable extensions, especially with the GPU 12V-2x6 cable?
Any blind spots before I order? Cheers.

All in around £3000.

Should I return newly purchased Lenovo Legion 5 and Buy PC instead?

My younger brother just purchased his first laptop (Lenovo Legion 5 15AHP10 15.3") from micro center for $999. I did some research and it was the best price to performance. Now for the same price there is PC available that i somehow missed and it got me thinking if we should return that laptop. Sure enough for PC you need a monitor ($150-200 extra if not something crazy) but RTX 5060 compare to laptop RTX 5060 is different things.

Here is 4 PC in $999-$1099 range:

Lenovo LOQ Tower 26ADR10 Gaming PCAMD Ryzen 7 8745HX 3.6GHz Processor; NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5060 8GB GDDR7; 16GB DDR5-5600 RAM; 1TB Solid State Drive ($999) (RAM 2x8gb) this is pretty good for $999.

HP OMEN 16L TG03-00XXXX Gaming PC (Refurbished)Intel Core Ultra 7 265F 2.4GHz Processor; NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5060 8GB GDDR7; 32GB DDR5 RAM; 1TB Solid State Drive ($1099 2x16gb) is refurbished worth it?

PowerSpec G738 Gaming PCAMD Ryzen 7 5800XT 3.8GHz Processor; AMD Radeon RX 9060 XT 16GB GDDR6; 32GB DDR4-3200 RAM; 1TB Solid State Drive ($1099) (RAM either one 32 or 2x16gb i don't know) this one is probably the best.

Acer Nitro 60 N60-640-UR21 Desktop ComputerIntel Core i5 14th Gen 14400F 1.8GHz Processor; NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5060 8GB GDDR7; 16GB DDR5 RAM; 1TB Solid State Drive ($1099) (RAM 1x16gb) one channel RAM is not good.

I'm thinking of either Lenovo LOQ Tower or PowerSpec G738?

He doesn't really need portability and if i did my research better i would probably look into one of this instead of laptop, what do you think?

How much would you pay?

I was browsing the second hand market and I came across a build with the following specs:

AMD Ryzen 5 3600 (6 cores / 12 threads)
• RX 5700 XT
• 16GB DDR4 3200MHz RAM
• 1TB NVMe SSD

The rest of the build is not specified. No bid has been placed yet. So my question is how much would you guys pay for a used pc with these specs?

Advice on SFF AMD build

Hi everyone I hope you all are well!

I’m currently building a DIY steamOS build and was wondering if I’m overpaying for certain parts I’m using in the build. Also if all the parts are compatible within the fractal Terra case/ and steamOS

(All prices in USD)

CPU: Ryzen 5 9600x (180$)
GPU: GIGABYTE RX 9060XT (460$)
Mobo: Asrock AMD 850i (179$)
PSU: Lian Li SP750 V2 Gold (125$)

Operating System & Version: WINDOWS 11 Home
GPU Drivers: AMD latest
Chipset Drivers: latest

Background Applications: none

Description of Original Problem:

Hi everyone,

I built a gaming PC with my son, teaching him about all the parts and sharing the passion with him but I am having a tons of issues. 🙁

The last PC I built was over 10 years ago. I’m new to AM5, DDR5, EXPO, and the related stability issues. I’m a software developer, and I used to game and build PCs, but I’m definitely out of touch and not up to date.

I just finished installing all the drivers, Windows updates, and essential software. I also ran some short tests in OCCT, but Cinebench failed to start. When I enable EXPO, Windows crashes.

I’m concerned there may be some stability issues and underperformance even with Expo disable.

Please see the attached screenshots in the link below.

Any advice is welcome.

Note: CPU and socket are good, no bend pins. No nylon sticker left on cpu heat sink of nvme m.2 ssd.
All parts are brand new from Amazon.

Troubleshooting:

Ai help:

OK, this changes things. I have to walk back my “Cinebench is just buggy software” call from earlier — the pattern is now too consistent to be software.
The pattern across this build:
• MEMORY_MANAGEMENT (0x1A) during install
• EXPO crashing Windows before desktop
• Cinebench failing to initialize
• KERNEL_MODE_HEAP_CORRUPTION (0x13A) now
• A random .sys driver file showing as corrupt (0xc0000221)
All five of these point to the same root cause: memory corruption. Either the RAM, the CPU’s memory controller (IMC), or insufficient SOC voltage is causing data in RAM to silently flip bits — and when those bits land in code or critical OS files written to disk, you get exactly this mix of “different error every time” crashes plus corrupted driver files.
What to do right now, in order:

  1. Press F1 → Recovery → Startup Repair. If that doesn’t get you back to desktop, boot from your Windows USB and choose Repair, not Install. You may need to reinstall Windows since the OS files appear corrupted on disk.
  2. Once back at desktop (or before reinstalling), disable EXPO in BIOS. Run at JEDEC DDR5-4800 for now. This is the diagnostic baseline.
  3. Download MemTest86 (free, from memtest86.com), make a bootable USB, and run it for at least 4 passes (~4 hours). This is the actual test, not OCCT’s short memory check. MemTest86 runs outside Windows and will catch what we need to catch.
    • If it errors at JEDEC: hardware fault. RMA the RAM. If new RAM still errors, it’s the CPU IMC → RMA the CPU.
    • If it passes JEDEC but errors with EXPO: your specific CPU’s IMC doesn’t handle DDR5-6000 with 64GB cleanly. Common with 2x32GB kits, which stress the IMC harder than 2x16GB.
  4. If MemTest passes JEDEC but fails EXPO, try this BIOS tweak: Set VSOC (CPU SOC voltage) manually to 1.25V (Auto can undervolt it). AMD’s max safe limit is 1.30V — never exceed that. Also try VDDIO_MEM at 1.40V manually. This sometimes rescues marginal 6000 kits on 9950X.
  5. Check SSD health with CrystalDiskInfo. Memory corruption can damage files on disk, but I want to rule out the SN7100 itself being faulty.
Realistic expectation: with a 2x32GB kit on a 9950X, there’s maybe a 15–20% chance the CPU IMC just isn’t strong enough for DDR5-6000 and you’ll need to run at 5600 MT/s instead (still a 1:1 ratio, still fast). That’s not a defect — it’s silicon lottery. But first, MemTest86 to find out where the actual problem lives.
Don’t put more hours into Windows setup until MemTest86 has run clean for 4 passes. You’ll just keep fighting ghosts.
