How do allergy parents deal with family who think you're "overprotective"?

Curious to hear from parents managing severe food allergies the label-checking, cross-contamination questions, declining outside food and getting called "paranoid" or "dramatic" for it by relatives who don't get that a trace amount can trigger a real medical emergency.

If you've dealt with comments like "a tiny bite won't hurt," how do you set boundaries without it turning into a full family blowup? Where's the line between holding firm and just avoiding the fight?

Coconut allergy: Do you rely on the “Contains” statement or always read the full ingredient list?

With the FDA's updated allergen guidance removing coconut from the list of major tree nuts requiring a mandatory "Contains" warning, coconut is no longer guaranteed to show up in bold allergen summaries at the bottom of packaging.

While brands still have to list coconut by name in the main ingredient list when used, it means anyone allergic can no longer use the "Contains" callout as a quick filter.

Have you noticed brands starting to phase it out of their allergen warnings yet?

Can dogs actually detect gluten?

I keep seeing videos of dogs sniffing food and apparently detecting gluten.

Turns out, some people with celiac disease do train dogs for this, but how reliable they are is still debated.

If you have celiac disease, would you trust a trained dog to detect gluten in your food?

Curious to hear from people who have actually tried this.

Genuinely curious

how do you handle products where the ingredient list is technically fine but you're still not 100% sure because of vague wording like 'natural flavors' or 'spices'?

For those who carry an EpiPen: how do you explain why it’s different from Benadryl?

Genuine question for people who carry an EpiPen .

I used to think of it as just "stronger Benadryl" but realized recently they work completely differently (antihistamine vs epinephrine).

Has anyone had to explain to a friend, coworker, or even a teacher why Benadryl alone wouldn't cut it in an emergency? Curious how that conversation usually goes.

How contact reaction works

Non-allergic person here, trying to understand something better. I always assumed severe allergic reactions only happened from eating the allergen, but I recently learned skin contact alone can trigger a reaction too. For those who deal with this, how different is a contact reaction from an ingestion one? Does it still scare you the same way, or is it more of a "manageable annoyance" most of the time?
