Please Help! New Allergies are ruling my life.

I keep developing new allergies and I hate it.

Im 30, Enby, and ai am currently allerigic to most things. I wont go into anaphylaxis, but my throat get's scratchy and my it causes my sinuses to get really bad, giving me a sinus pressure headache. Then I will have an acne flare up a day or two after exposure.

I didnt used to be allergic to anything other than fragrance soap. I used to get nauseated and get migraines at the smell of perfume/cologne. And fragrance heavy soaps would cause me to get hives or break out. But I never had seasonal allergies and I never had food allergies.

Then 3 years ago I opened the window in my classroom to let some air in because it was hot and all of sudden my throat was getting swollen and scratchy and my face felt hot.

Slowly I noticed things with nuts in them, things that I had been eating for years, were causing similar reactions. I got a butter pecan coffee and couldnt feel my throat. My hazelnut creamer made my tongue itch.

So I finally get to an allergist like 6 months later, avoiding nuts and wearing a mask outside. And Im now allergic to it all.

Thats right

- All nuts but pistachios

- Every grass

- most trees

- cats (I have 4)

- dogs (I have 2)

- hay

- cockroaches (ew?)

But Im also developing new allergies that

A: Werent tested for/not on the test

B: That I wasnt allergic to before

- Oats

- Cinnamon

- Carob seeds/carob chips

And the piece de resitence

-This week is White sugar. I put white fucking sugar in my coffee and started coughing as my tongue got swollen. But when I switch to brown sugar. It's fine. When I got coffee from McDonald's and it was fine but that could be because the sugar is in the syrup. Maybe my sugar just got contaminated. Im just so tired yall.

I fucking hate this. What is wrong with me? My doctor set me up for allergy shots I cant take because the stupid allergy doctor is on the other side of town from my work so by the time I get there after work theyre closed. But they arent trying to figure out WHY it's happening.

I miss peanuts and cinnamon rolls so fucking much. And If I can't have normal as coffee, Im gonna scream.

Has anyone else noticed the aggressiveness towards food allergies online?

Like nowhere else have I experienced people be aggressive towards me when I mention food allergies except for on reddit.

I can't tell anyone about my allergies off of the food allergy sub without people getting angry at me.

Example: I will simply mention I don't like it when people say "so sorry" to me or telling me how "I must not enjoy life" when I mention I have an allergy because I don't want them to pity me. People got genuinely angry at me for that.

Even mentioning that there are actually some restaurants I can eat at, people will get aggressive and are convinced everyone with allergies must stay inside forever or that we are all faking it.

Anaphylactic shock without typical swelling, rash, allergy symptoms etc?

Just used my EpiPen for the first time, ate a cookie that must’ve had almond extract, immediately started feeling bloated and severe GI distress. This has happened before so I thought I was in for a day of misery &throwing up. But then After 15ish minutes I started getting really dizzy, asked my girlfriend to drive me to ER, on the way there my heart started beating chaotically, I completely lost sensation in my hands and feet, sense of doom , almost blacked out. I stabbed myself with epipen and slowly got better, was mostly stable by the time arrived to hospital

Meanwhile, I had zero symptoms of the typical allergic symptoms like throat swelling, hives, itching, rashes, etc. Just severe GI distress and then the symptoms of low blood pressure/shock. I had no idea it’s possible to go into anaphylactic shock without these symptoms. Unless I was somehow experiencing anxiety and that caused the dizziness, lack of sensation in extremities? Has anyone experienced similar? The doctor wasn’t convinced it was anaphylactic shock since I didn’t have any of the typical symptoms, thought it was anxiety along with the GI reaction, but I’ve had allergic reactions before and none of them escalated liked this. They gave me steroids anyways and my blood pressure slowly rose back up to normal over my stay .

Does this sound like it could still be anaphylactic shock? Could I have died today? The whole experience has me shaken up, I’ve always had the EpiPen just in case, but never thought I’d actually need it

Avocado Allergy

Hello,
I believe Ive recently developed an avocado allergy and never had one before. Whenever I eat it, I get itchy mouth, lips, my throat will itch. Sometimes my lips will swell or it’ll just straight up burn. I was wondering if anyone has this allergy as well and it’s gone away for them? Or if it’s gotten worse over time? I love avocados and hate the symptoms I get when eating them.

Am I Overreacting?

My almost 2 year old daughter, we’ll call her Jane, had an anaphylactic reaction to eating half a perfect peanut butter bar about 4 months ago. She started coughing like crazy, had a hoarse voice, hives and threw up. Initially went to Urgent Care thinking I was over reacting, who then sent us by ambulance to the ER.

It was horrible. I never want to experience that again. I have multiple siblings and their spouses who were all sympathetic about the situation as well as my parents. Fast forward to tonight at our 4th of July gathering…

My niece made white chocolate covered peanut butter bites. Everyone is eating them, including her cousins who love playing with her and my mom who loves kissing and snuggling her. So I announce, probably with a bit of a frustrated tone, “Anyone who is eating those isn’t allowed to touch Jane anymore” I get a couple looks and someone says “Is she really that allergic?” Thankfully one of my sisters said “Well let’s not find out” then my mom says “What?? No really? Aww I’ll wash my hands!”

I tried to explain that wouldn’t be enough but everyone was looking at me like I was being a little extra. I now feel uncomfortable setting my daughter down because she puts everything in her mouth and there are crumbs of it everywhere. I had to go outside and take a walk because I started to get emotional and didn’t want it to be seen. I’m so confused. It could send her to the hospital people!!! How is this even a thing? Anyway.. I feel like no one around me is taking it serious. It makes my weak mind wonder if I’m overreacting.

I do not actually know how allergic she is. I do not know if a small peanut butter smear could send her into anaphylactic shock. But dang it I don’t want to find out.

Edit: I wanted to mention that we have been to an allergist. Blood test and scratch test have been done. Blood test showed it was a “low” allergy but my allergist said the number doesn’t really mean a whole lot. That if she had an anaphylactic reaction that’s all we need to know and she could have a worse reaction next time. We are starting OIT next month to help with accidental exposure. Also, have 2 epi pens on us at all times.

Advice on toddler with egg allergy at parties

My daughter will be 2 this month and has a pretty severe egg allergy (hives, severe vomiting, difficulty breathing). We were at a 4th of July party today with other families with young children and our girl had an allergic reaction :(. She is okay thankfully but I’m unsure how to navigate this new world of kids being more independent in shared eating settings.

In today’s case, we watched her carefully the whole time, mostly just worried about general safety with open stairs, being around the pool etc, and we never saw her eat anything with eggs. There was plenty to eat that did not contain eggs and I gave her those (hot dogs and bun, beans, chips and guac). On the buffet table there was potato salad, and on snack trays there were mini quiches, both of which we made sure she stayed far from. Perhaps she picked something off of the ground or maybe one of the other toddlers hands touched the egg-containing food then touched her?

In the future, do we ask the host to make sure nothing is made with eggs? If they can’t accommodate we don’t go? Do we just have to accept she might have allergic reactions at parties? Would love to hear what others have had success with at this challenging age.

Edited to add: Ya’ll are right and I feel like a horrible mom :( The buns were brioche hamburger buns (I had assumed they were processed Pepperidge Farm or similar). Thanks for all the advice! We will definitely be packing our own food to parties from now on, always.

Worried I’m developing a seafood allergy, I work at a seafood restaurant

When I’m at work my chest gets red and all the skin that comes in contact with the seafood is extremely itchy and I’m starting to get red spots. The rest of my body feels sore, my eyes feel itchy, and I am just in general itchy all over. I don’t want to have to quit and if I eat stuff that had close contact with seafood I’m ok but I don’t want to risk eating it straight up because I don’t have a lot of money to go to the hospital. I am going to make a diy allergy test my boiling so seafood at a low temp and concentrating the broth. Then soaking a piece of gauze and taping that to my skin and my boyfriend’s skin (as a control since he is not allergic). If it’s possible is there a way to keep my job and treat this so it doesn’t get worse? I have allergy medicine I can take but I don’t know if I can afford taking it every time I’m at work. What should I do?

Is 10x8mm wheal a severe reaction?

To a skin prick test.

Asking here as I would like a sense of how bad it is. I know it’s bad enough for our allergist to have prescribed an epipen.

Recently diagnosed with a moderate allergy to sesame, do food allergies tend to get better or worse with time or exposure?

Recently, I have been tested and diagnosed with a moderate sesame allergy after consuming a dish with sesame seeds in them. My reaction thankfully wasn’t life threatening, but it definitely scared me. It started with numbness that appeared from the back of my throat and made its way to the roof of my mouth and tongue. It lasted for about an hour after I stopped eating the dish. This is the first time I’ve ever had a reaction like this before to something I ate.

When I spoke with my allergist, they basically told me to avoid sesame at all costs and try to get myself an EpiPen if I could get it at an affordable price.

With that being said, do moderate food allergies tend to get better or worse overtime or with exposure? I’m not planning on eating dishes with sesame anytime soon, but I was curious to know if you could outgrow them like some kids do with certain food allergies.

Please keep in mind I’m very new to food allergies so I apologize if the answers I’m seeking to this question are very obvious.

Dairy ladder & eating out

Context: I have a 2.5y/o with a moderate dairy allergy. We’ve worked with his allergist and pediatrician to introduce dairy and see what he can and can’t eat (I’m in the US where the dairy ladder isn’t commonly recommended, but it’s somewhere around the milk chocolate/cheese steps that he can handle). He is completely fine with some dairy but not straight milk, cream, ice cream, yogurt, etc.

Question: how do you handle eating out with this kind of allergy? I’ve had it go both ways where I can explain it and they will still serve him what he’s able to eat or I’ve had the restaurant refuse to serve him anything. It feels wrong not to disclose that there is an allergy, but he’s also a picky toddler eater and it doesn’t help if they won’t serve him anything due to risks of cross contamination (which I am not concerned about generally) or misunderstanding of how dairy allergies work.

Looking for gluten free and nut free savoury snacks - UK

We have visitors arriving soon who are sensitive or maybe allergic to gluten and nuts.

What savoury snacks can I give them? Tyrrells Crisps say "may contain milk" but don't mention gluten or nuts. Are they ok?

Or are there other brands to go for? I have time to buy online.

Many thanks for any advice or recommendations.

Watermelon

I am not asking for medical advice.

I used to love watermelon. I could eat a quarter of a melon just while cutting it. But over the last few years I’ve noticed that any time I eat it I will get diarrhea. No stomach ache or any other symptoms but pretty consistent diarrhea. Is it possible for someone to develop an intolerance or allergy to watermelon?

Are coconuts part of tree nut allergies?

I don’t have any food allergies but the question crossed my mind. Since coconuts are technically fruits I wasn’t sure if there was any sensitivity as some with peanut allergies also have soy allergies for example.

Avocado- Oral Allergy Syndrome?

Does this sound like OAS or something that’s progressing to something more severe?

For the past 10-15 years whenever I would eat avocados my mouth, tongue, and throat (and sometimes inner ears) itched a little. If it’s mixed in guacamole or in sushi it’s usually fine and nothing happens so I’ve just kept eating it, probably a dumb choice but here we are.

However the other day when I ate one it felt like something was stuck in my throat, almost a pressure in my chest. I took some antacid and it got better. The same chest pressure thing happens when I eat kiwis, so I stopped eating kiwis probably 10 years ago.

Last Tuesday, I got a facial and they put a lip mask on at the end. The next day I had a severe painful blistering rash everywhere along the borders of my mouth, chin, and a small amount of my nose. My upper lip was swollen about 2-3 it’s normal size. I called the spa and found one of the main ingredients was avocado oil.

I will avoid avocado but I’m a little worried after the severe skin reaction, if I should get checked out by an allergist. Because avocado oil is in so much stuff now and it never seemed to be a problem before.

i found out my roommate has been micro-dosing me with shrimp paste my whole life. i'm severely allergic to shrimp.

TRIGGER WARNING: feeding someone food they're allergic to without informing them of the allergen beforehand

additional warning: this is both a rant and me seeking advice on what to do. not currently having a reaction because i haven't ate it yet. (also sorry mods idk if i used the proper tags or not i'll gladly change at y'all's discretion)

so to preface, i am severely allergic to shrimp and get hives/itchy rashes even being around dishes that contain shrimp. whether it be shrimp chips, a bowl of freshly cooked shrimp, raw shrimp, shrimp dishes— if it's shrimp, i'll probably get a reaction from being in the proximity alone. everyone knows not to bring shrimp near or around me, ESPECIALLY my roommate as she's the one who surprisingly kept me alive my entire life.

i went downstairs tonight to check on the food as we had agreed that she'd make dinner for tonight: a dish called sinigang. sinigang is one of my favorite comfort foods, and she makes it taste really good, so i didn't think much of it throughout my entire life, especially since she'd feed it to me a lot when i was a kid.

well apparently, i go to check the tamarind soup mix pack she used for tonight's dinner, and lo and behold: bright and in bold letters— shrimp paste. packet even said in the little allergen tldr that it contains shrimp and milk.

so i confront her going, "WTF? this has shrimp in it, i can't eat it," and she goes, "you're only allergic to fresh shrimp, you've been eating sinigang your whole life and you've been fine." so i just found out she's been sneaking shrimp into my food without telling me NOR caring to ask.

additionally, might i also point out, i always eat this dish at night, Right Before i take my antihistamines prescribed for a different condition, so i might not have noticed before due to the antihistamine medication. think benadryl^10 kind of antihistamine.

ALSO, this isn't the first time she's exposed me to shrimp, and she continuously does not care to be careful with shrimp around me in the past. she often puts shrimp-filled meals in containers then plops it right next to my food in the fridge because "she was craving them and it won't hurt me being in the container." the only reason i haven't moved is because i am dirt poor and currently pursuing my degree at the moment.

the reason i'm "seeking advice" is that i'm 1) reconciling with the fact she's been micro dosing me my entire life,
2) currently questioning whether different types of shrimp presentations react differently/get processed to where some allergic people can eat it (like raw vs cooked, but i'm also allergic to cooked shrimp so idk),
and 3) questioning if the reason my gut issues have been flaring more severely in adulthood is because she often feeds me veggies from the sinigang she makes to put with my other meals. i already have a gut condition since birth, but i'm wondering if my gut issues getting worse in the first place could be caused by the unknown quantities of shrimp.

i know i should probably bring this up to an allergist as well, but i have complex medical issues so i figured i'd ask if altered food states can change the way allergies are triggered first before i'm able to get an appointment in.

not sure if i worded that well, but i'll for sure not be eating her sinigang anymore after tonight.

TLDR: my main question is that if shrimp paste is cooked, is it any different from normal shrimp in terms of reactions?

Developer (no allergies myself) researching a meal-planning tool for multi-allergy households — would love your reality check

I don't live with food allergies, and I won't pretend to know what that's like. I'm a solo software developer, and in researching problems that existing apps handle badly, one pattern kept appearing: meal-planning apps cope with ONE restriction fine and fall apart when a household combines several — one kid nut+egg allergic, another celiac, and suddenly it's spreadsheets and the same 8 rotating meals.

Before building anything I'd rather hear it from the people who actually deal with this:

  1. How do you plan the week today, and how long does it take?

  2. Has any existing app genuinely helped, or do they all "not get it"?

  3. Would you trust an app that filters recipes across everyone's restrictions at once — if it always insisted you verify labels yourself and never guessed on safety?

If the answer is "this wouldn't help, here's why," that's exactly the feedback I need. (With mod permission I can share the concept page; there's a waitlist, but the input matters more.)

is it possible to develop an allergy many years later?

Ive eaten chicken my whole life, even more than beef. (especially considering chicken is less expensive than beef) however ever since last year after being put under a lot of stress due to uni academic issues, ive notice either my tongue or upper lip get like, slightly burnt feel wise everytime i eat my usual boiled chicken in a sandwich.

doesnt always happens, but it happens frequently i feel, kind of. while there could be an overlap with the hot liquid i pair my chicken-containing meal, it has happened now that i recall before, with no hot liquids.

the latest allergies i developed were to apricots (though the cooked ones are fine as long theyre orange) and some berries (strawberry but apparently its mostly on jam format, which is bizarre to me still as i can eat some raw or 7 even on my smoothies.

what really freaks me out is that chicken is supposed to be considered hypoallergenic, so how on earth couldve i developed this? mind you, it wasnt gradual at all. it just happened so one day i feel this burn and itd repeat itself almost everytime i ate chicken.

Dairy Allergy and Egg Allergy Question

For those of you that are adults who were diagnosed with an egg and/or milk allergy as a kid and have grown out of it- I have some questions.

  1. How long did it take you to grow out of those allergies?
  2. Did you do the ladders? Not sure when allergists started recommending those
  3. Did you keep both foods consistently in your diet throughout your life?
  4. Did you experience any type of relapse as an adult? For example, did you knowingly or unknowingly remove either food from your diet for a period of time and the allergy “came back”?

My son is allergic to both and I’m just curious of experiences people have had as they grew into adulthood so I can be better prepared.
