Prosthetic Impatience

I got my right BKA just over a week ago (September 25th) and I’m feeling pretty discouraged today. I hate having to ask for help every time I need something or even just have to use the restroom. My house is barely wheelchair accessible, so it’s difficult to get around in my wheelchair without help. I know I’m very early in my journey, but how long did it take most of you guys to reach a point where you could wear your prosthetic and function more independently again? I’d also appreciate any tips to make me feel less burdensome during the healing stage.

I found out I have to get a below-knee amputation in less than two weeks and my fiancé got down on one knee and promised to be with me every step of the way!🥰

Smart Drive Switch Control

Hey guys! Does anyone use the smart drive switch control on their manual chair? I need some tips on how to accelerate while still controlling my chair with the wheels. I’ll attach a pic of the device!

Recently Engaged and Facing Amputation-M22 & F20

Hello everyone! My (M22) fiancé proposed to me last Sunday and it was everything I dreamed of, but this week I found out that I’ll (F20) be getting a below-knee amputation on September 10th. My fiancé has been with me through many surgeries and medical crises, so I know he’ll be with me every step of the way. We also knew the amputation was likely happening, so it’s not a complete shock. I care a lot about us though, so if anyone has been through something similar I’d really appreciate tips on how to best support each other through this?

BKA Scheduled

Hey all! Sorry that I’m posting so often, but my surgery was officially scheduled for September 10th. I’m extremely nervous and feel unprepared even though I’ve done so much research. Hopefully you guys can answer a few of my questions. Did they provide a residual limb support for your wheelchair at the hospital or did you buy one? Also what kind of rehab did you do and how long after surgery did you begin? Are transfers much different than how I do it with my injured leg? Any extra tips are much appreciated!!💜🦿

🍃 and bka

Do any amputees here still consume weed? I’ve been using both edibles and flower for years to manage my chronic pain, but I have to quit for surgery and rehab. Will it ever be safe to do edibles again in the future or would that still put me at risk for complications even after recovery?

Upcoming BKA Advice

Hello everyone! I’m a 20 year old woman and yesterday I found out that I’ll be getting a BKA in about 2 weeks. I was in a nearly fatal accident at 16, so I’ve had 9 surgeries on my foot over the past 4 years and I’m hopeful that this will be my last surgery for a while. I also got engaged to my wonderful fiancé less than a week ago. I’m looking for tips on how to support each other as well as how to get through this physically and mentally? Are there any specific must-haves or things I should bring to the hospital?
