Part 15 of cool games I found: The Crystal of Kings

Certainly not the greatest Beat Em Up ever made but it´s certainly ambitious. The art style is a bit of a mixed bag but overall I really like it. Throws are considerably harder to pull off and there are a lot of combos and special inputs that I still don´t know. The magic attack changes depending on how much you have stored. However the UI is pretty unintuitive, having both a magic bar and a magic level gauge instead of just segmenting the bar. Routing to hoard fairies will make you busted real quickly, especially the passive magic regeneration.

It´s easy to tell that this was Brezzasofts first game and it´s performance on Mame is suboptimal to say the least but I would still recommend it to anyone who likes fantasy Beat em ups.

I wish the potential of Arcade FPS could have been developed further

I feel like War: Final Assault hits it out of the park right away. The enemies, the movement, the weapons, the levels, It feels great. It´s snappy, dense and retaining just enough simplicity. The aiming however is terrible no matter how much I tinker with the settings. There is a Deathmatch mode but I didn´t try it myself.

The game is the result of a cooperation of Atari games And Midway Games. Console versions were planned but sadly cancelled.

Once in a while a game like this comes along and reminds me how cool Dragons are

This is a fun game to get people into more advanced mechanics like rank and medal scoring.
The scoring revolves all around medal chains. Destroying ground units with the banish weapon reveals medals > Picking up 5 makes more valuable medals drop > Missing a revealed medal resets the chain, so sometimes its better to not reveal what you can´t pick up.

Managing your banish gauge is vital for everything score. As I have NOT demonstrated very well, save the power-ups for a full refill. As long as you speed-kill the yellow ships you get consistently big power ups.

There are no cops in this game btw.

Some of the enemies in this game can be real bastards. The bat guy can anti air you from halfway across the screen. Some you pretty much can´t beat unscathed without reserving a weapon for them. Make sure to get the alpha renewal version. The standard American version cut out a lot of stuff.

Regarding AI works

We have seen the reports about the vibe coded projects. We do not support the extensive use of AI in coding, however banning it completely will just cause more people to lie about it. For now we are going the Steam route and these projects will be marked accordingly with flairs. If these incidents take overhand we will implement stricter measures.

A tribute to my first arcade shmup

I remember first playing it as a browser game in school. Bullet visibility is kinda poor sometimes, but it´s still among the best of the 19XX series.

Both this and Mars Matrix have a charge up invincibility form and both are vertizontal. I wonder if there is a correlation.

What genre even is this game?

The aiming is wonky but its fun. Idk if there is a difference between the characters.

There are people who don´t know about Osman and that is unacceptable

The spiritual Successor to Strider, developed by Mitchell Corp who also created Gamshara and Funky Jet. It´s definitely harder, especially in the last 2 stages. The afterimages are very handy so losing a life in a boss fight is pretty devastating.

Thunder Fox rules

Again sorry for the gameplay, it´s too hot to focus.

The jumping attack is a big departure from Rolling Thunder. But it is well integrated and using it well is a big part of the game plan. Plus it´s pretty badass. I like the variety of enemy behavior of jumping and ducking that makes even the simple grunts interesting to engage with.

I have no idea how to use the car. The movement is too slippery for calculated play and barreling through just gets you killed.

Interesting fighting/run&gun/Beat 'em up game

First off, sorry for my crappy gameplay. My MAME is kinda laggy and idk how to fix it.

This is a Metro game, a developer I can´t find much about. All I know is they made a total of 5 games, most of them puzzle games and a shmup. https://www.arcade-museum.com/company/metro

The game does a good job of blending the genres together. Although in essence it´s mostly a 2d Beat 'em up. You have an attack and jump button, and most moves are bound to fighting game style inputs. I don´t know if it´s my controller or the game but the ledge grabbing input just doesn´t work sometimes.

You can freely choose in which order to defeat the bosses except for the first and last one. However there is a dynamic difficulty at play, As you clear stages bosses get more moves and support enemies become more aggressive.

You can´t go by the stars for difficulty. Aquarius for example is very easy at the beginning, and only gets challenging as the >4th boss onward.

Some of the mech bosses are kind of lame. You just need to memorize when they turn off their keepaway hitbox to do any major damage.

Its unique, well made game, but I couldn´t bring myself to put in a significant amount of time.

The history of Japanese FPS games is short but pretty interesting

Gunbuster or Operation Gunbuster in America is intended to be played with a joystick in one hand and a Lightgun in the other.

I´ve heard one of the reasons that FPS games never took of in japan is motion sickness. My theory is that they tried to prevent that by reducing the screen movement.

The game seems more like a proof of concept that was never followed up on than a full game. As cool as the gimmick is, it is little more than that. Aside from certain projectiles it doesn´t have much in terms of veriticality. Since you still use the gun to look around and enemies are pretty nimble, horizontal wise your crosshair is gonna be glued to the sides of the screen looking for them most of the time. Circle strafing is still pretty effective, its just a pain in the ass.

The characters each have different secondary fires, but they aren´t all that exciting. They are on a short cooldown so all you really do is fire them off as soon as it´s recharged for extra DPS.

Worst of all, you cannot skip the tutorials, popups and intermissions.

But the game came out in the same year as Wolfenstein 3D. it´s still interesting to see a completely no blueprint, alternate approach to FPS gameplay.

A car, a road and carcrashes, sometimes thats all you need

Bump n jump is an excellent example of superb simplicity. One of my favorite games ever. Not especially deep but I can always go for a few rounds. It makes me wonder why more arcade racers don´t have jump mechanics. If I had to nitpick something its that the jump feels a little easy to abuse in term of pure survival. Could use a small cooldown for more considerate jumping.

Remember when Capcom said: lets put everything awesome we can fit into a game?

It´s a fairly long game at a bit over an hour. You can go pretty heavy on the routing with the items and companions. The thing I don´t like is the constant health drain. I get they wanted to try something other than a timer, but it just feels unsatisfying when you route and play perfectly and still end up compromised. On top of that the items are semi randomized so health refills are not a guarantee. Other than that its very much worth playing.
