NEW TO UNIFY - best gear for 3800SF home?

In short, I am somewhat techy, but by hobby not profession. I’ve had Eero with WiFi 5 mesh network in house for about 9-10 years which has been okay.

Recently installed 1Gb fiber and I’m finally adding Ethernet drops in a few key areas. Just realized how much the eero was holding me back in terms of speed, and mesh issues since the extenders are not hardwired.

I run home assistant with a fair number of smart home devices, although the majority are NOT WiFi. I’m running Ethernet for POE cameras (not ubiquity).

I was looking to get the UCG Ultra, and 3 APs.

After reading a lot of this subreddit tonight, I see everyone push for the UCG fiber and U7 pro APs. But I’m not convinced I actually need all that. If my home has been running satisfactorily on my current slow and poor set up, any upgrade to WiFi 6/7 and hardwired APs should give me a massive upgrade.

Trying to make the best value decisions without breaking the bank. I know it’s ubiquity and the bank is prepared for a hit, but maybe I’ll be fine with U6 plus or U7 lite APs?

WiFi is basically just for <10 people (if I have guests), mostly phones and laptops, maybe 1-2 TV that aren’t hardwired.

I’m not sure I need 6GHz or faster than 1Gb from my WiFi. I don’t think I’ll ever need more than 20 ubiquity devices. I’m not having 300 people over.

I’m sure you’ll still tell me to go for the UCG fiber and U7 pro, but tell me why I really need it. If you tell me I need to future proof, tell me how long you think any of these options will last before my next upgrade? My guess is no matter what I install today, I’ll need to upgrade in 5-10 years.

As a tech hobbyist/tinkerer (still learning about VLANs and networking) I appreciate all of your insight and wisdom. I know that there will be many things ubiquity offers that I won’t fully understand or be able to take advantage of, but I want quality gear and this seems to be the place to be.

Thanks!

Wide double lens camera or turret style for a very wide front exposure?

Corner property that is wide. I like the Reolink products.

I have a doorbell, which is centered on the front exposure. I was planning to add 2 cameras to the front of the house, left and right corners.

I bought a duo 3v and a CX820.

I was going to put the duo on the corner end of the property since it would potentially be easier to come at the camera from behind via an easy public access road. The CX820 on the opposite end, angling towards the middle of the property. Given the property layout, there is still a bit of land on the side of the house that the CX820 would miss.

Am I better off installing TWO duo 3v (one in either corner) for better coverage. Or is the quality of the CX820 that much better that it’s worth sacrificing some loss of field of view? I could always use the CC820 elsewhere if I were to buy a second duo 3v.

Thanks!!

Help me decide if I need Proxmox and or Frigate…

Background is in nerdy, obviously somewhat tech inclined but still consider myself a bit of a noob in this area.

I set up HA on a miniPC a few years back. As this was my first time doing anything with a miniPC (never had a pi or anything like this) I had read a lot about Proxmox, but was concerned about adding too much complexity to my system that I was worried I wouldn’t be able to manage or troubleshoot.

Few years later, everything has been rock solid stable, haven’t touched my miniPC since the first week I set it up.

Now I’m adding Reolink cameras. I have the home hub since my doorbell had to be WiFi, but now I’m adding POE cameras.

With my current setup - no proxmox and no frigate, I think I’ve been very satisfied and everything working to my liking.

Am I blissfully ignorant on what I’m missing out on?

Please help me understand why I need either or both of these? What will they add to my current setup?

And if I decide to go back and add these, how much of a pain will it be for me to reconfigure or reformat my miniPC. Of note, the only thing on my miniPC is home assistant.

I’m sure someone will ask, my miniPC is:
Beelink Mini PC, Mini S12 Intel 12th Gen 4-Core N95(up to 3.4GHz), Mini Computer 8GB DDR4 RAM 480GB SSD

Changing my 5 stock portfolio after 10 years… thoughts on the “small” change and allocations?

About 10 years ago, after some research I came up with the following portfolio strategy:

VOO: 60%
QQQ: 4%
VXUS: 25%
VXF: 10%
BND: 1%

As a younger investor with a long time frame I wanted more of a tech tilt (hence QQQ) and I really wanted 0% bonds but wanted to remind myself that as I get older I’d want to add more BND so wanted it as part of my portfolio with the plan to adjust the allocation as I aged.

Don’t get me wrong I’ve done well over ten years slowly adding to my positions.

Now I’m rethinking some of my strategy. I still like the overall plan, but with the very heavy tech tilt that the S&P already has I don’t feel I need QQQ as much. I’m thinking of changing from QQQ to AVUV with the following allocations:

VOO: 54%
VXUS: 25%
VXF: 15%
AVUV: 5%
BND: 1%

Again, I still have a 20+ year time horizon, a tolerance to withstand market swings and not ready to add any significant BND yet. I don’t think I’ll sell QQQ, but naturally as I reallocate to the above positions, the percentage of QQQ will decrease significantly.

Open to all advice and suggestions.

Today, if starting from scratch I’d probably just do VTI to simplify down to a 4 ETF portfolio, but given I already have decent amounts in my current ETFs, I feel I should mostly keep it and just make smaller adjustments.

Very appreciative of this community.

Reolink WiFi Doorbell - Reolink app sucks, can I use HA to communicate instead?

Have the Reolink WiFi doorbell and home hub. When someone rings the doorbell and I try to open the app, it’s slow and often fails to connect/load to the doorbell.

I have it integrated in HA. I have a dashboard that anytime motion is detected the dashboard shows a live view of the front door for 1 minute and this works FLAWLESSLY.

But I can’t talk through the doorbell from the dashboard, or from my phone via HA.

Is there any way to do this? I want to use HA instead of my Reolink app.

Thanks!

Appreciate any and all advice. Can’t wait!

Samsung Tab S7 Plus - countertop frame/stand for dashboard - Need help/ideas?

Bought a Samsung Tab S7 Plus to display my dashboard in my kitchen. Mostly for information, less for interactions/control.

Want a stand. But needs to be aesthetically pleasing for the kitchen. Maybe something that looks like a picture frame?

Also, want something that will help hide the cord (won't be completely hidden like a flush mount on a wall). Want maybe like a right angle flat charging cord and something to help run the cable out the back.

Any products, ideas, suggestions??

Have tried to google and searched Etsy.

Recommendations for free standing dashboard hardware - basically a tablet to sit on a counter

Basically I’ve fully designed a dashboard but don’t have the hardware to display it yet. I’m ready to buy it.

Plan is for a 11-13” tablet that will put in some sort of frame - so it will sit in landscape like a picture frame on the kitchen counter (don’t want it wall mounted). Want good quality item for reasonable price. Was looking at the Samsung tab A11+, or maybe like an old/refurb s7+. I’d love AMOLED and the larger screen but not sure if worth the price.

For the stand either plan to buy something or have it 3D printed. Something to hide the bezels and cord as much as possible.

Not sure if it matters but my dashboard is more informational and not meant for lots of interaction:

- family calendar
- alarm status
- light count (bubble card navigates to full light list)
- live doorbell feed when motion detected
- open door/window alert
- leak sensor alert
- fridge/freezer temp out of range alert
- sports scores
- media player info

Etc…

Any other ideas?

I’ve tried contact cement 3 times now. Every few months it falls off.

I clean as much of the old glue off as possible. Clean the area with alcohol. Apply the cement per directions. Clamp the foam on and leave it for 2-3 days.

Any other ideas? No local shops fix helmets.
