PSA - Keep Your NRS Receipts

Hey gang,

Quick note - tried submitting a warranty claim with NRS today. Didn't keep the physical receipt. Item was purchased at a local shop in Canada that unfortunately closed down. Huge bummer, they were a big supporter of our local whitewater club. Can't grab a purchase record from them.

Was related to material degredation, nothing that could be explained by mistreatment or wear.

Got shut down for not having a receipt when submitting the claim. Understandable, but a bummer for sure.

Stuff them receipts somewhere safe.

Clean lines!

Canoe Tripping w/ Dog Tips

Hey Friends!

This seems like a silly request - but I am looking for any tips or tricks for taking a dog on a canoe trip.

I am a very experienced paddler, guided for years and have spent years of my life in the backcountry. I have NEVER paddled with a dog!

My girlfriend is stoked about going on a canoe trip. She has done a bunch of backpacking but never really spent time on the water. We are planning something in the fall for a few nights, and we are planning on bringing her super well behaved pup. The dog has never been in a canoe and never slept in a tent. I want to plan whatever I can to make sure he has a fun trip.

He's not small, maybe 65lbs so I think we should go for a paddle with him before the trip just to see how he does hanging out in a boat. I do have a dog PFD lined up that I am borrowing from a friend.

Other than that, all I can think of is a small foam sleeping pad for him at night.

Any input would be appreciated :) Thanks!

Someone walked infront of me at the airport, I didn't slow down.

I spend a lot of time in different airports, all over the world. I fly a lot for work, it isn't for fun. Somewhat fatigued frequent flyer these days. Airports are super simple regardless of location - you check in, go through security, go to the gate. Somehow people turn this into chaos. I swear some people shut their brains off as soon as they get to the aiport and turn into main characters with zero situational awareness. I'm a bit over it.

The thing that annoys me the most are the people incapable of walking with the flow of traffic, randomly stopping in the middle of walkways, randomly changing directions without looking, etc...

I was tranferring though ORD, it was packed as always. Tight connection from a delayed flight, I was moving fast. Buddy was walking beside me with a fountain drink and pizza, also with the flow of traffic. He suddenly pivoted and slammed into me. Had maybe half a second to react or slow down, and I made the decision not to.

I'm not small. He bounced a bit, spilled drink, dropped pizza. He looked very surprised. I kept walking and made my flight. Felt good in the moment.

I feel bad about it now. Thanks for reading.

--------------------------

Edit for clarity after some comments and perhaps a slightly misleading title: This was a guy in his mid 20s clearly not struggling physically and also moving fast. Muscly dude, I'm just fatter. He basically pivoted on a dime, barged into me, and I made the choice to not stop/dodge in the split second before impact. I let it happen. Feel a bit bad about it now.

Edit 2: Apparently this blew up. To be clear, I did not assault someone, angrily plow into them, or run them over. It wasn't that dramatic, he kind of just fumbled what he was carrying in a shocked state. Got tired of the erratic movement and mindless behavior that seems to be concentrated in airports and stopped caring for a moment. Kind of like costco but actually needing to get somewhere. I simply didn't move out of his way when he suddenly turned into me. If I were equally unaware the same outcome would have happened.

Edit 3: I don't think I am better than other people because I travel a lot for work. I have given many clearly lost people directions in airports, helped people carry bags up stairs, helped people with their overhead bags. Last week I helped a crying woman figure out what to do after her flight was cancelled, spoke to the gate agent with her, and sent her a lounge pass to have a chill place to take a breather. All people who were respectful of others despite going through it. I have dodged hundreds of people in airports over the years and let the intrusive thoughts win this time. Yes, I could have been kinder.

Edit 4: This is a confession subreddit. I admitted my wrongdoing, and feel bad about not just dodging the guy and him spilling his stuff. Gotten a few weird hateful chat messages and RedditCare reports.... Let's not do that please, holy crap people.

Help Me Choose a Tent!

Hey Gang,

I am in the market for a new tent.

Had a Sierra Designs Zeta 2 for years that I absolutely loved. Replaced from storm damage with an MSR Elixer that has held up well for the last ~10 years. Last season I noticed the fly was wetting out so I reapplied DWR. Improved a bit but last weekend it rained all night, was wetting out after a few hours, started dripping like a seive, and there was a proper lake in the tent by the morning despite the ground being dry under the tent... Complete fly fabric failure I guess. Everything was completely soaked, sad soggy sleeping bag vibes.

Pretty set on just getting something new and not deal with trying to give it more life - I have gotten like 400 nights out of it and am not bothered replacing it.

Anyways, hoping to grab a 3 person for my the next one. I can get discounts with mountain hardware and big agnes, not opposed to other brands. Overwhelmed with options, also tents are expensive now holy crap!

I would like something with more mesh than the elixer, I found it didn't breath that well even with the fly off, and didn't get the best star views on clear nights. Not backpacking with this tent, all canoe tripping, rafting, car camping. Durability > weight but also needs to pack reasonably.

Anyways, would love to hear what you are using :)

Thanks!

Newer Dagger Plastic Kinda.... Soft?

Not talking smack in the post, just curious to hear thoughts. Totally expect boats to wear out. I have a plastic welder that has gotten a lot of use. Just seems like dagger plastic has changed in the last ~4 years?

I have owned many kayaks, C1s, OC1s over ~15 years. My current housemates are also boaters, last count was 27 boats in the yard. Just saying this to add context that I have hit a lot of different plastic on rocks and have a pretty good feel for what rocks hitting plastic does.

Picked up a new phantom a couple years back to replace one that was well loved. Really liked that boat. Out of production, so I went new to get some good life out of it. Immediately I noticed that it was gouging up really easily. Stuff like seal launching and small hits just taking an unreasonable amount of plastic. Ended up having to weld it first season from a gouge that went through. The previous phantom I had was not like this. Picked up a new rewind towards the end of last season and same story, lots of deep gouges that felt undeserved. I emailed dagger and they told me that I must just be hitting sharp rocks which felt like a weird response.

Paddling an option OC1 regularly as well. I swear I can crater that thing full of water off rocky boofs and it won't leave plastic but the phantom/rewind are getting carved up on chill rivers that I have paddled dozens of different boats on.

Buddy grabbed a new rewind three weeks ago and today on the river he made a comment to me about how rock hits seem to be eating it. Motivated me to ask if anyone else has gotten a similar vibe.

Anyways, love these boats just surprised how they are wearing compared to pretty much everything else I have owned.... Kind of reminds me of how OG bliss stick boats would carve up.

Thoughts? Or am I crazy?

Help With Crown Land Use Policy Atlas

Hey Reddit,

I am struggling to find a specific land policy report in the ON land use policy atlas. Wondering if anyone can help me out here.

Identifier C4381

The atlas shows it designated as Conservation Reserve, but I can't find a specific policy. Pops up as "kolapore uplands conservation reserve".

Friends are certain thet camping is fine here, and I don't agree. I do a lot of crownland camping and canoe tripping but also like rules / don't f**k with access.

Any help would be appreciated, this is the first time I have used the atlas where a policy isn't easy to pull up from the identifier....

Thanks!

Stop between Nagoya/Takayama and Matsumoto/Tokyo

I made a couple posts asking for help figuring out where to go to get away from the city for a bit after a work trip. This subreddit has been absolutely amazing! Went from overwhelmed with options to picking a direction and booking some things.

I have two nights left open - the night I finish work, and a night between Matsumoto and Tokyo.

For the night I finish work I am leaning towards staying somewhere in Nagoya. Every time I have stayed in the city it has been for some work event. Could be nice to actually explore a bit on my own. Sakae/Osu seem like it could be the move. Also open to staying somewhere en route to Takayama, Gero comes up as an option but honestly looks a bit underwhelming.

Last night of the trip I could stay another night in Matsumoto, but that feels a bit high risk with my flight the next day if I miss a train or something going straight to NRT. I have stayed in Shinjuku/Shibuya/Asakusa a couple of times and would be keen to stay somewhere new in Tokyo, or somewhere between Matsumoto and Tokyo. Fine with anything from relaxing and chill to having a few beers and some nightlife.

Stay Day
?? Finish work Anjo Aichi / Nagoya
Takayama Arrive Takayama, check out the town.
Hirayu Onsen Leave Takayama mid morning, maybe do Shinhotaka ropeway. Soak.
Kamikochi Hike to lodge, chill out in the park
Matsumoto Hike out, stay Matsumoto. Afternoon or next morning visit to Narai-Juku.
?? Head somewhere closer to Tokyo
N/A Arrive NRT ~2:30PM

Thanks :)

Onsen Town Visit for my Itinerary? Near Takayama - Kamikochi - Matumoto

Hey Friends,

I posted a few days back looking for some chiller vibes and some nature after a work trip. I have been to Japan a few times, and will already be getting plenty of city time on this one.

I will be ending my work part of the trip in Nagoya. Someone reccomended staying in Kamikochi which looks like a fun experience.

I think I will do three nights in that area, Takayama - Kamikochi - Matsumoto.

I would love to visit an onsen town for a night or two. Kinosaki and Kusatsu look pretty great, but I don't know if I could swing either based on how far they are and limited time. Hirayu Onsen looks like it might work? Gero too?

I will have 5 full days free, needing to be at NRT around ~2:30 on the 6th day. I can probably travel a bit after my last day of work, but it would need to be from Nagoya.

Thanks!

Short Trip, Nature Focused.

Hey there! I have 5 days free at the end of a work trip in Japan this month. This will be my 4th trip and I have spent a lot of time in Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Kyoto. After a long trip of meetings and moving from one factory to the to the next, I really want to get the heck out of the city for a bit. On my last trip I went to Hakone for a few nights and quite enjoyed it.

I will be starting in Osaka, and will need to be in Tokyo on the 5th night to fly out of NRT the next day. Gives me 4 full days and 4 nights, 5th day travel somewhere reasonably close to Tokyo and stay there, flying out the following evening.

I have spent probably 20 hours researching and can't make up my mind. I would love to get some hikes in, maybe stroll by a river, walk through some mountain trails, find some good food. I won't have a car.

I have looked at the Kii Peninsula, Takayama, Izu peninsula.... I am totally overwhelmed haha.

Thanks :)

Itinerary Help and Suggestions, 5 Days Free Between Nagoya and Tokyo

Hey Friends,

I am about to leave for my 6th trip to Japan and hoping to see some new places :)

I will be travelling for work, ending in Nagoya. I then have vacation booked for 5 full days, flying out of Tokyo on the 6th day. The flight is at night, so I have most of the 6th day free and don't need to wake up in Tokyo. I also have the night free when I finish work, so I can travel that evening as well, from Nagoya.

I am hoping to get some reccomendations on somewhere new to go. I really want something on the more chill end of things. I will already be spending some time in Tokyo earlier in the trip and have a night in Shinjuku. I have spent a decent amount of time in Osaka, Kyoto, Nagoya, and Tokyo.

My last trip I went to Hakone and really enjoyed it. The mount Kintoki hike was top notch. This has been my one trip outside of a city in Japan. It was great.

I would love to get some eco tourism in.... Some hikes and scenery. Also open to staying on the coast for a night or two. Preferably somewhere relatively close to where I will be starting / ending the trip, and accessible by public transport.... Kansai / Chubu / Kanto (maybe southern Tohoku). I have spent hours looking online and have really only come up with maybe going south to Nachi falls.

Thank you!

Only tentative thoughts right now.... I have heard Nara is nice and have never visited. I also enjoyed the nightlife vibes of Osaka before. Might do Nara/Osaka after my work trip then head from there.

Day Night
Finish Work, Nagoya Night 1 (Osaka or Nara)
Free Day 1 Night 2 (Osaka or Nara)
Free Day 2 Night 3 Free
Free Day 3 Night 4 Free
Free Day 4 Night 5 Free
Free Day 5 Night 6 Free
Free Day 6 Fly NRT

Very Overwhelmed Choosing! (Road/Gravel)

Hey Reddit,

Sorry for the noob question. I have spent hours researching and am still stuck trying to choose a bike or naviage the used market....

I haven't bought a bike in years. I ride a 90s rocky sherpa that I bought for 50 bucks. Threw a few upgrades and touring tires on it. Serves me well going to the grocery store etc.

Recently I have become interested in riding for fun - roads and gravel bike paths. I have taken my bike out a few times for 20-30km rides and it just feels a bit heavy with limited gearing. It also isn't that comfy/ergonomic. My girlfriend also races Ironmans and does well in her age group, it would be cool to ride with her on recovery/chill days and keep up a little bit or at least not get absolutely dusted.

I think I would want the following, but I really don't know....

  • Gravel Frame (Al or Al+Carbon Fork)
  • Drop Bars
  • 2 front gears, 10 or 11 rear gears
  • Disc brakes

So far that has only narrowed it down to what feels like a thousand different bikes haha. Lots of slightly different geometries, tire clearances etc... Preferably I am shopping used, but I am not opposed to buying something new if it is the right fit.

The list I have so far would be.... Trek Domane Al, Norco Search, Giant Contend, Cannondale Synapse.... I think?

Any input would be awesome. I think i am on the right track but honestly have no idea how the heck to shop for a bike.

Thanks!
