The Multi-Combat Fighter 800, endearingly called MulCo, was introduced at a time, when a lot of sovereingty movements popped up in the Colony Worlds and the Outer Rim.

It was supposed to offer a solid basis for PD Forces and other young defense institutions. A special deal structure was offered, giving 36 Star Fighters, a License to produce the Star Fighter indiginously, an assembly line, and a parts support contract. This scheme helped WMR expand into the Outer Rim massively and obtain dozens of small yard stations and thousands of acres of real estate.

Sanewashing the Hammerhead

A lot of times there is no real point in asking, why things are the way they are in the Star Wars Galaxy.

But that doesn't take away from the fun of coming up with in-universe answers!

So today I'd like to talk about possible explanations for the striking, dare I say iconic, building practice called "Hammerhead".

___

To immediately put my cards on the table, I believe the Hammerhead (read as the building practice, not the Ship Class), is an economic and utilitarian decision.

One of the things noticeable with hammerheaded ships is, that they are relatively short and slim. That is possible thanks to putting the bulk needed for weapon subsystems, shields and the like, in the head-shaped bow of the ship, a point we will revisit later.

Such configuration is allowing for example to put things like hangars on a relatively small frame, tucked in safely behind the head.

Slimmer construction is also understood to generally save construction costs, by using less material and it is also most likely lighter than burlier constructions, improving performance and maneuverability, especially with the comparatively large engiens often found on hammerheads.

Smaller ships also are much easier and affordable to build and can be built in many more yards than larger cruisers of similar capabilities.

Next of course, there is the opportunity cost associated with crews. People cost money, food and space. A crew of 80(300) can survive longer on a thousand metric tons of consumeables, than a crew of 16.000 (3.000), boosting operational range, endurance and of course supply efficiency.

___

We have laid out that one might want an affordable, low crew requirement, fast and well armed ship. How does one achive such a ship then?

If we compare hammerheaded ships to other ships their size, we often find a gap in capabilities, usually in favor of the Hammerhead.

The reason for that, I believe, is the "citadel", located in the head.

Citadels in naval construction represent/represented the most protected and critical areas of a ship. It is where ammunition is stored, where the internal engiens lie and where the command of the ship is situated.

For the Hammerhead, we put all our proverbial eggs into one basket. The head.

There is an astute interest in Star Wars for fighting head on, as one can presents a much smaller target that way. Armor and shields, as well as weapons can therefore be concentrated very effectively in the bow of the ship, as the rest of the body doesn't need as much armored plating or all around shielding (though the question as to how shields work is a completely different discussion).

___

Through the power of concentrating the things that make ships bulky, heavy and expensive in a slim citadel structure in the direction of fire we end up with much more smaller and lighter and thus affordable ships that can comfortably punch up.

___

Thank you u/Ahriman-119 for the blue hammerheads.

STS-5 "Thunderspike" [OC]

Length: 12.3m

With: 7.3m

Height: 3.7m

___

Year of Introduction: 26BBY

Producer: WMR

Type: Space Superiority Fighter

Price: 186.000 Credits

___

Hyperdrive: Class 2

Shielding: Light Vessle Deflectors

Armaments:

- 4 Laser Cannons

- 2 Concussion Missle Launchers

Crew: 1

___

Roles: Space Superiority, Long Patrols, Anti Piracy

Affiliations: Ducal Star Fighter Corps; Confederacy of Independent Systems; Neutral System Alliance

___

The STS-5 (Star Superiority Fighter) was introduced to markets after a long series of pre-production runs and development pauses.

Development began during the Stark Hyperspace War, which has led to intense Bacta shortages on Lavoo. The end of the war meant withdrawn funds from the Ducal Navy, forcing financing by outside investors.

A year before, the Delta A-7 "Aetherspike" by Kuat made its public debut. When WMR presented their new, heavier fighter during the year's Anaxes Defense Show, the press was quick to dub it "Thunderspike".

The Thunderspike is fast, heavily armed and was advanced for its time, with an integrated hyperdrive.

It was larger than many concurrent star fighters and not as maneuverable as the style of the time dictated, but it proved itself survivable thanks to the shields and the adoption of new tactics.

Later models would improve shields, sensors and engien performance and a strike craft variant was also released during the war.

After the war, most of the produced fighters were sold off by the occupied Lavoo government, to fund the reparations owed to the Empire, spreading the Thunderspike across the Galaxy.

___

I hope you like it! I went from a nose mounted armament through roughly 6 redesigns, before arriving at this result. I must say, I am very happy.

THEEE BEST Cruiser. Maybe. The Munifex Light Cruiser

It is old, it is cold, it is gold.

Pretty well armed light cruiser that is cheap, capable and a staple of the Outer Rim.

A hangar, a company worth of soldiers...what more could you want? Except maybe some laser cannons.

Screenshot from Fall of the Republic Mod for Empire at War, because there is basically no art of it.

With: 64m

Height: 63m

___

Year of introduction: 20BBY

Producer: CEC

Type: Frigate

Price: 5.500.000 Credits

___

Hyperdrive: 1

Backup: 10

Shielding: Light Frigate Shieding

Armaments:

- 8 Quad Medium Turbolasers

___

Roles: Cruising, Fleet Action, Screening

Affiliations: Rebel Alliance; Sector Forces; Corellian Forces; New Republic

___

Born from the same project that developed the famous DP-20 Gunboat, the Corellian Frigate-33 was a heavily armed screen leader.

It's protection was not something to write home about.

But it's firepower was unrivaled in it's weight class. One of its biggest hamstrings was the relatively short range, with only 6 Months' worth of consumeables. This came from the assumption of being the Republic Navy's rear security.

___

And the last one for today! I hope you like it, let me know what you think!

Affiliations: Lavoo Revolutionary Navy; PFD/Sector Fleets; Rebel Alliance

___

The SFC-600 was a star fighter built by WMR in the hot phase of the Galactic Civil War.

Unlike most producers of the time, WMR hadn't invested strongly in fighterborne ordinance. The space in the hull was taken up by redundancy systems and stronger shields. The Ion Cannons made it highly competitive anyway in the fighter jousts.

The Mastiff traced its lineage to developments from the Clone Wars and experiences made from production performed under imperial occupation.

___

Probably my favorite fighter I made. Smooth curves, a new Cockpit approach...the wings are inspired by the TIE-Phantom and the corpus by the Z-95.

I hope y'all like it!

___

The Corellian-General-Cruiser-1 was the starting shot for a new wave of capital ship designs by CEC. Based on experiences gained with the model and the chassis, many improved and new ships would follow.

A clear clash between old systems and future visions, it was overtaken soon by other developments, but the foundations the General Cruiser laid, can't be denied.

[OC] Alnikov II Cruiser - WMR

Length: 617m

With: 99m

Height: 115m

___

Year of introduction: 21BBY

Producer: WMR

Type: Cruiser

Price: 12.000.000 Credits

___

Hyperdrive: 2

Backup: 9

Shielding: Heavy Cruiser Shieding

Armaments:

- 4 Quad Heavy Turbolasers

- 3 Tractor Beams

Crew: 2.000

___

Roles: Cruising, Trade Protection and Interdiction, C4i

Affiliations: Lavoo Ducal Navy; PFD/Sector Fleets; Confederacy of Independent Systems

___

Based on the Alnikov Class of Frigates, West-Mid-Rim Yardworks (WMR), developed a bigger cruiser concept for the now raging Clone Wars. The Alnikov II Program bore a capable cruiser in the characteristic wedge shape.

Unlike its smaller namesake, the Alnikov II Class was equipped with a sizeable hangar, inspired by the Providence Class.

The relatively rare ship type was popular as a Support Vessle and EWS ship, often being deployed on privateering and raid missions. A single cruiser could keep an eye on many systems.

The Loss of the War meant the End for the Alnikov II cruisers. Most that survived the war were scrapped or scuttled and production was never resumed.

Finally, the Sucessor to one of my favorite creations. Now with a new original Logo!

Have a nice day!

Crew: 80 - 120

___

Roles: Frigate, Anti-piracy, Trade Protection, Catastrophy Relief

Affiliations: Lavoo Ducal Navy; PFD/Sector Fleets; Trade Federation

___

The Warspite Frigate was developed and built by West-Mid-Rim Yardworks (WMR) to fill the need for modernized light warships in the far reaches of the developing Outer Rim. The first batch was delivered to the Jewel Sector Fleet in 50BBY. Following orders by Outer Rim worlds and newly formed Sector Forces spread the design all over the Galaxy.

After a brief legal battle over construction methods, WMR had to share the design with the Corellian Engineering Corporation, who promptly were awarded a large contract by the Trade Federation.

What made the ship popular was it's vast cargo capacity, the ability to land and fly in rough conditions and the high speed. The ship in its standard configuration made rather little provisions for consumeables (only about 2 months) meaning any travel had to happen fast. This was usually fixed by allocating parts of the vast stowage area.

The heavy weaponry was intended to be effevtive against any and all threats encuntered at the time.

The munitions clamps were added, because the Ducal Navy asked for a minelayer following trade disputes.

Later on, equipment packages for the class were released, that intended to uparm and futureproof the design.

___

Hammerheads are peak.

I am very proud how this one turned out. A bit smaller again, but still quite impressive, I think.

Let me know if you'd want some of those in your structure. Critique is always welcome.

Year of Introduction: 27-20 BBY

Producer: Tanthar Royal Star Arsenal (TaRSA), Fornak Star Yards, WMR

Type: Heavy Cruiser

Price: N/A

___

Hyperdrive Rating: 2

Shielding: Heavy Frigate; Heavy Cruiser (upgraded)

Crew: 3.300

___

Roles: Heavy Cruiser, Pocket Battleship

Affiliations: Kingdom of Tanthar; Noble Houses of Tanthar

___

Shortly before the outbreak of the Clone Wars, during the Seperatist Crisis, the Kingdom of Tanthar began looking into upping their defenses, a move that would be awarded with a form of armed neutrality during the war.

The ships would undergo many redesigns and hotly debated priorities, spending a lot of time in the desing phase. The partnership with WMR, who delivered Alnikov-Frigates before, brought the experience from the Dux-Class Heavy Cruisers.

The result was a well armored and armed battleline ship, with enough prestigous air to be acceptable as a flagship. Designed to be built in groundfacilities, it was a sturdy ship.

The first three ships were built over Lavoo, before the design plans were handed over to the TaRSA, where production continued over the decades.

___

Finally, a new ship!

Let me know what you think.

Hull: oxidiced alloys

Affiliations: Hutt Cartell, Outer-Rim Security Forces, Judicial Forces (rarely), Confederacy of Independent Systems (rarely)

___

The history of the Mansvolt Privateer, called ATV-60 (Armed Transport Vessle) in most registers, is closely tied to the company that made the ship.

Mansvolt Free Yards was founded in 140BBY by Kasha Mansvolt on Nar Shadda and quickly expanded from a repair yard to actual production. Financing was secured via a huge loan by the Hutt Cartell. The Hutts gained a whole third of ownership in the company, on top of the massive intrest payments.

Through circumstances, the entire Hutt ownership fell to Jabba the Hutt eventually, who didn't much care for the small shipyard, outside of appreciating the trickling extra income.

This powerful overlord (and a further 25% share given to CEC) allowed Mansvolt to develop freely and remain independent well into the Galactic Civil War.

The unique enviroment of the Outer-Rim, with companies, cartells and syndicates fighting for dominance and intense pirate activitiy called for a cheap, armed transport. The Privateer was heavily armed, decently fast in realspace and benefited from simple construction and sturdy comm systems.

___

Back with a little snapshot. Let me know what you think! Would you like to use this vessle?
