Caring for wife 38f help

Good morning everyone, I 42m have become the caretaker for my wife 38f after a massive left hemisphere hemorrhagic stroke. There is no prognosis of meaningful recovery. She's not on machines but she has a PEG and a tracheostomy.

My main question.....I have 8 and 6 year old daughters. What are some ways to help / prevent them from into an assisted caretaker roll as they grow. I want them to be kids and go experience life not feel relegated to a caretaker life. I'm sure there will be some run over, but for those that have navigated this with young kids.... how do you keep them kids, young teens, etc...I hope that makes sense.

PrayerRequest Jona

Good afternoon everyone, today I'm asking for y'all to pay for my beautiful wife Jona. Yesterday they noticed increased inflammation in her blood tests, indicating an infection. They placed her on a broad spectrum antibiotic until they can pin point the origin of the infection. Today she seems more relaxed for sure, but we are definitely not out of the woods! Please pray for my amazing wife!

Smells I'll never forget!

I'll start.....

After the fall of Mosul, Iraq in 2017 I never thought I'd experience a smell that has so traumatized my sense that it renders me inoperable like that of burning flesh! ISIS would drop gas cans with grenades attached to them from roofs of buildings into the troops and citizens. The gas would explode and set human bodies on fire. This has traumatized me for years...BBQs are sadly a no go for me. For the first time in years I felt that same stress/ fear/ and survival impulse kick in after smelling a hall of neurological rehab patients all with diarrhea or C. Difficile for 5+ months straight. Sitting at home with some neighbors and friends, one of their infants blows out their diaper and I immediately get flash backs to burnt flesh, rotted human remains and C. Difficile. I'm broken....!

Prayers for Jona

Good afternoon everyone, today is the 5 month anniversary of my wife's hemorrhagic stroke. She's stable still in-patient. She still has a tracheostomy and a PEG feeding tube but she's making small progress. We still have such a long road ahead of us. I'm asking for prayers for her progress in swallowing properly so we can remove her tracheostomy. Thank you all for your bold and wonderful prayers thus far.

5 month update

5 months post left hemisphere hemorrhagic stroke and my wife Jona 38f now moves her head and follows conversations on a consistent bases. She still has a PEG, Tracheostomy and has severe paralysis of all extremities beside her left arm. She doesn't really follow any command short of asking her to look at you which she does often. Still have faith for more progress. after 2 months in a comma and another month weening her off of massive amounts of sedation and meds that impacted her cognitive functions she has made leaps and bounds the last month!

Husband/wife vs Caregiver advice

If you had to do it over again, what would you change about being a caregiver to your spouse. For those who have done caregiving for a extended length of time, is there truly a way to remain a spouse vs transitioning to caregiver?

I hope this makes sense.

Prayer Warrior's needed

Today while visiting my wife jona in the hospital, she started to shake, spike a BP, and get cold to the touch. They have taken stat labs to check for infection. We could really used some strength of prayer right now.

4 months and a week.

Just looking for a place to vent my fears / worries, frustrations and hopes!

A little over 4 months ago my love had a hemorrhagic stroke of the left hemisphere.

She spent 2+ months in neuro ICU heavily sedated after emergency surgery, then craniotomy, shunt placement, removal due to infection and development of an abses, pneumonia and eventually a new shunt was placed.

The last two months in neurological rehabilitation where she has battled through wild BP swings "now stable". They've removed most pain meds or other meds that create a sedation effect on her. She looks at us as we visit, moves her left are really well. Still nothing truly on command and no attempts to talk.

She smiles when she sees me, or hears me talk, but won't follow commands. She's going to battle sever paralysis of right side I'm told and her left leg is very stiff from spasticity. If I put a picture or a book in front of her she will grab it and look at it. She also just started grabbing her right hand this week. Would avoid touching it with her left hand like the plague last week.

Strokes are sooo unpredictable and hearing timelines from doctors leave me with a heavy heart but I have faith.

Share your good news stories out there after 4+ months of little progress to start out?

Needed Tablet advice for 8 and 6 year old for a long trip.

I want to get tablets for my two girls, mostly for drawing, reading and maybe some light learn games.

I don't want to spend money on something that will be crap in 6 months either. Anyone have recommendations that aren't 500+ dollars.

How to initiate and navigate SSDI or SSI application 38f

Does anyone here have experience initiating disability for a spouse who's unable to file themselves. Is it a bunch of work without a power of attorney?

I am working on gaining my guardianship of my wife. As she's not able to communicate on her own with little prognosis of improvement for the future.

Prayer Request for Jona Guardianshipm

I'm sending up a prayer request for a successful petition for guardianship of my wife. We are currently stationed in Germany and she had a catastrophic medical emergency. We did not have any power of attorney stelablished. As she's still inpatient at a local german facility I need to petition the courts to allow me to assume guardianship of her. Before I'm able to fly her back to America. Thank you all for the support!

Tracheostomy Cuff deflated

Winning on a Monday, friday the Neurologist completed a FESS on my wife Jona, she's had a tracheostomy for four months now. He said her swallowing muscles and reflexes seem to be in tact. She is struggling with her transition to actually swallowing. But this week they will begin the 1 hour twice daily of deflating the cuff to see how she handles swallowing and breathing without aspiration. Little wins y'all is what matters. My baby is still with us and progressing even eith such a small win I am eternally grateful to God, the doctors, and everyone here.

The weight of no control

I really don't have anywhere else to go to express myself so I appreciate having you all here. I just want to talk about the weight that is carried when you have no control over the outcome of a situation as a caregiver. For the last few days my wife has been doing rather well in the rehabilitation center physically she seems more alert she's not trying to talk yet when she doesn't really truly follow commands yet but she seemed to be alert comfortable she would smile when she saw me and then fast forward to today where she seemed almost inconsolable the entire visit. This is where the weight gets heavy my wife cannot tell me what's wrong she doesn't respond to commands she's just laying there crying or what looks like crying for hours on end. I'm currently in Germany in the doctor does not believe that is pain related or anything like that and so he wants to allow her to remain this way believing that it is her Awakening from her semi comatose/vegetative state and the realization of what's going on. Me on the other hand I see my wife crying, upset which increases her heart rate and in turn her blood pressure. when she's crying and coughing it's increasing her cranial pressure as well. the doctor seems to not be worried and believes that it's a natural part of the process of her coming out of herself.

It hurts my soul watching her battle those emotions knowing there's nothing I can do myself to help. Thank y'all for always listening.
