Quokka would’ve been a better pov for book 17 over kinkajou
I don’t hate kinkajou. I think she’s ok as a side character but I think she’d be annoying and grating as a main character. I didn’t like the way her sloth story was written in the guide book so I’m very nervous to have her as a pov. I know she has “Trauma” from the Nightwing island and being attacked by chameleon but those two are never brought up in arc 2 and she doesn’t have any reaction to it other than maybe not trusting moon a little at first and then being ok with her because “she’s not like the other nightwings” or something. Book 16 introduced a ton of new characters too so having someone who was already in a lot of arc 1 and 2 while a ton of new characters were introduced who needed development disappointed me.
She really infuriated me at the end of book 10 too. She didn’t give Darkstalker the strawberry (that was foeslayer) but she did write the enchantment for it. Turning darkstalker into peacemaker went against one of the messages in arc 2 of how it was bad to change people with magic. If that wasn’t bad enough darkstalker isn’t even the same dragon anymore, Kinkajou completely erased his Icewing heritage by making him half Rainwing instead for absolutely no reason other than “I thought it would be good for him” which is gross imo. Not to mention no one telling winter what happened and kinkajou saying “We can trust you to be a loyal friend but we can’t tell you what happened to darkstalker” or something like that And all of this is treated as good.
Having someone on the dungeon isles would be a bad idea for book 17 since it’s about the missing queens but Quokka and Wollemi left with Umber and mulberry. Maybe something could happen in the book where Umber, Mulberry, Quokka and wollemi encounter the missing queens and they meet kinkajou somewhere in the book too so she can be a side character. Quokka would be interesting to have a protagonist since having a pov from someone who lived on the dungeon isles after Umber experienced it as an outsider would be cool. The book could also explore how being a servant/maid for Beryl and being separated from her sister personally affected her. Her past with Platypus and their relationship as sisters could’ve been explored more since I really enjoyed their dynamic in book 16. Quokka and Wollemi also seem to be in some sort of romantic relationship or she has a crush on him. They seemed to be childhood friends and Tui is usually good at writing romance when the characters knew each other for a while instead of the “love at first sight” bullshit. This would be good too since Wollemi doesn’t have a character yet and could be developed more and what his and quokka past were like
