If you have not read Circe by Madeline Miller, please do

A few quotes I’ve collected from this beautiful and thoughtful book:

“When I was born, the word for what I was did not exist”

“You cannot know how frightened gods are of pain. There is nothing more foreign to them, and so nothing they ache more deeply to see.”

“Her only love was reason. And that has never been the same as wisdom.”

“The truth is, men make terrible pigs.”

“How many of us would be granted pardon if our true hearts were known?”

“I had been old and stern for so long, carved with regrets and years like a monolith. But that was only a shape I had been poured into. I did not have to keep it.”

“It was my first lesson. Beneath the smooth, familiar face of things is another that waits to tear the world in two.”

“I thought once that gods are the opposite of death, but I see now they are more dead than anything, for they are unchanging, and can hold nothing in their hands.”

Would adcoms have a reason to see photo IDs in secondaries? My driver’s license photo looks like I drove drunk to the DMV to get it.

Submitting proof of residency for my secondary. Out of town and only have my drivers license with me, which has quite honestly the worst photo I’ve ever taken. But at home I have a wonderful and professional passport photo. I want to get this app in super early because I feel it has some weak areas, but I don’t know if anyone on an adcom would see my photo ID. I am mid-blink and look drunk or half-asleep in the photo. Why is the DMV the tenth circle of hell?

That’s the goodwill special right there

Charging more for a piece of cardboard than the store charged for it … when you got it for free

What is the latest any US MD school will send out secondaries? I’ve been verified for weeks and still nothing from my #1 school.

Does this look like a legit email? I got this from Wix and was not even aware that I had an account.

Greeting/addressee of a LOR

Had a letter writer specifically ask me this. I’ve been thinking “to whom it may concern” or “dear admissions committee” but not sure. Does anyone know what is common or recommended to use?

The “Why do you want to be a physician” question on secondaries

Bro, I have plumbed the depths of my clinical experience, have no more relevant stories to tell. Don’t have another “angle” to tell anything from because I’ve answered this question in so many ways on the primary. What is the point of this question? Would it be bad to just give a shortened summary of my P/S? I saw someone jokingly suggest they do this to avoid reading the primary, but I cannot come up with a better explanation.

What kind of snake ate these house finch chicks? [Southern US]

We have rat snakes here but I can’t tell from just this limited viewpoint. If it’s venomous I guess I’ll have to change out of my flip flops to deal with it.

Empty tool evidently can only be used on a filtered deck? Is that just a deck with custom tags?

Deleted a useless cloze but am stuck with this.

Do I need to disclose in the activity description that I was previously acquainted with the doctor I shadowed? Also getting a LOR from this person so they will mention it.

Thanks for any advice. Didn’t know them very well before but got to know them while shadowing and ended up asking for advice on several occasions during premed coursework.

Scored a 506 on FL3, hated my life. Did about 500 practice questions and finally the passages started getting easier to read.
