Sangre de Valencia

Sangre de Valencia

This is a play on Agua de Valencia slightly higher alcohol, different juice, brandy instead of vodka, and grand marnier adding a bit more depth and sweetness. First attempt at this garnish for our anniversary dinner, I should have cut it a little smaller for a cleaner heart but I think it still came out okay.

¾oz Spanish gin

¾oz Brandy

½oz Grand Marnier

3oz Blood Orange Juice

3oz Cava

[Homemade]Tapas Anniversary Dinner from scratch

Charcuterie for lunch

Tuna crudo with lemon caper dressing

Smoked ribeye with olive chimichurri

Tapas con huevos y setas (egg and morel mushrooms)

Spanish butter beans

Serrano ham, manchego, and cherry pintxos

Sangre de Valencia cocktail (a riff on Agua de Valencia with blood orange, a splash of grand marnier, and brandy in place of the vodka)

Bruleed double caramel flan (the brulee was unnecessary, but the flan was out of this world)

PSA Jaywalking

Hey folks, basic reminder if you are going to jaywalk, especially crossing a major road like New Hampshire Avenue, it is a good idea to pay attention to traffic and not stare directly at your phone while you leisurely stroll across a road that regularly sees traffic moving at 50+ MPH. I'm not going to hit you because I'm paying attention, but there are other idiots out there just as stupid as you staring at their phones while driving. Please be safe.

Best bread in MoCo?

Hey folks, my sourdough starter has long since died, and my favorite bakery doesn't exist anymore... Can anyone recommend a bakery that does really good sourdough baguettes? I need them for an anniversary dinner next week. Doesn't matter where in the county it is, happy to travel for good bread.

The Trump Administration has been trying to deport a Maryland born citizen since December including holding her in detention for over a month despite being provided with her birth certificate since very early in that process. As of Tuesday her deportation case has officially been dropped.

Sayles Travel History

The Banner's article on Sayles's travel revealed even more troubling trends about Councilmember Sayles.

  1. number of trips outside of the region: 11 since she was elected, more than all of her colleagues combined.

  2. amount spent on travel: $20,307. The next highest spender was Councilmember Glass at $3,720.

  3. travel on a Sister Cities trip to a city that isn't a sister city to Montgomery County.

  4. Timing of the Hawaii trip reimbursement request. She only signed up for the NOBCO conference AFTER her request for reimbursement for the NACo conference was denied. While she has not been reimbursed for any travel for the NOBCO conference yet, her statement that any reimbursements will follow County laws certainly leaves open the possibility that she will get reimbursed for the Hawaii trip.

  5. The article notes that while attending Council sessions virtually she was frequently frozen and did not participate the way she would in person.

Is there a penalty for drivers going out of order?

We just had our driver pull into our driveway and immediately leave without leaving our food. Apparently he went to our house first by accident so rather than just dropping our food while he was here he decided to drive 20 minutes back towards the restaurant to his first stop and then 20+ minutes back to us.

Council gavels out after 30 seconds and pushes budget decisions to tomorrow

https://www.youtube.com/live/9rHTi2ZRwLg?si=AeXG7dqVPtAhCPBd&t=2521

Just to add, I don't think they are cowards as someone else suggested, I just think they have backed themselves into a corner. They took a fundamentally balanced budget (say what you will about the tax increase but the Executive's budget was balanced) and put in place a larger flat tax increase on homeowners while leaving out commercial property and landlords entirely and adding significantly to the budget without removing anything. The 3 CE candidates are all going to vote together because if they do anything else their opponents are going to pound them for whatever it is. Mink isn't going to vote for it without more funding for schools and that probably isn't happening so they don't have the 8 votes they need to pass the budget. I honestly don't know how they balance it at this point.
