Getting used to progressives and working on the computer

I just got my first pair of progressives 3 weeks ago. For daily general use they're great! Watching the TV and knitting on the same time. Driving the car. Checking my phone. But for reading a book or especially working on the computer for longer periods I'm not so sure yet.

Will you eventually get used to the fact that you only have a relatively narrow area of sharp vision? Especially if you work on a regular 27" screen every day, how have you found your progressives for that?

Also I notice I need very good lighting to be able to read comfortably. If I'm not in bright light, the corridor gets even more narrow. Does anyone else experience this?

Passwords

Is there an app that works well with degoogled dumber os, where I could securely store my passwords?

I'm an iPhone user currently (or mostly Nokia, but iPhone is my second device, mostly sitting at my desk), so all my passwords are on my iPhone, I've no idea about Android alternatives and how safe & secure they would be.

If you have tips on how to transfer the passwords safely, that would be appreciated too!

What happened when you switched to a dumbphone?

I've switched to a dumbphone this week. (I still keep my iPhone on my desk at home, because I want to be able to use WhatsApp on my laptop, and I have my banking ID etc. on my smartphone.)

I notice I'm more open towards having real-life interaction even with people I don't know. Like at events, chatting with people I don't know or someone from uni I haven't seen in 10 years. Or when I pass by a store, instead of googling their services, I go in and ask. It feels like I'm more connected thanks to my Nokia, not connected via my phone but in real life.

Nokia used to have a slogan "connecting people", I think that is accurate

what did you notice when you made the switch to a dumbphone or simplified your smartphone?

iPhone and digital minimalism

Hey there! Would love to hear some tips from other iPhone users, how have you successfully maintained a digital minimalist lifestyle while having an iPhone as your main device?

How did you set up your iPhone to be more minimalist? Did you use the "Assisted Access" mode or is there some other way to simplify and restrict the phone a lot?

How do you stick to using your minimalist iPhone settings and not go back to scrolling? It's so easy to just change the settings and go back where you used to be. Is there a way to control this from your laptop, to have some kind of a barrier?

I've been experimenting with a Nokia 3210 feature phone, and I just feel it won't be a long term solution. I still need to keep my iPhone running in the background to have WhatsApp on the laptop and access banking, and so on. But based on this experience I know I could get rid of like 95% of the apps on my phone.

The nice thing about Nokia is that there is nothing else than calls & texts, so there's no reverting!

Banking apps

Dumber Mini FAQ says "With the google variant many banking apps are supported. However there are a lot of banking apps that will not work on this device due to the Google Play Integrity check. As a good start - please look for your application in https://privsec.dev/posts/android/banking-applications-compatibility-with-grapheneos/ "

I checked and the apps I'd need are on that list. Will they work in a degoogled Dumber Mini? Or only when I have the Google variant? The FAQ answer I have pasted here seems to indicate towards the apps only working in a Google variant.

What is returning retro for you?

I notice there are quite "puritanist" views regarding dumb phones on the /dumbphone sub. It's like either you're on a Nokia feature phone or something similar, or you're not using a dumb phone. Maybe that's technically true, but also I think for most people what they're looking for is an intentional device with the apps that add value in their life, instead of just texts and calls. I notice this either/or view is catching up on me and I feel like I'm failing even thinking of buying a Dumber Mini to have certain comforts a smartphone can bring (like maps app and email). But also having a Dumber Mini would allow me to ditch my iPhone completely. It would make sense to have just one phone instead of having my Nokia with me all the time, and iPhone in the drawer to do certain necessary things e.g. regarding banking or MFA.

First day with a dumbphone

First day and it feels harder than I thought!! I've planned for this change for about a month. Comparing different dumber smart phones and then perhaps waiting for months to receive it felt like I'm just dabbling around and not actually doing anything to change my habits. So I decided to not overthink it, and bought a feature phone (Nokia 3210) second hand. I thought I'd give it a go and see what happens. Could I actually get by with this - or do I need to get a dumber smartphone.

But first day with a real dumbphone I start to realize all the things where I'd need a dumber smart phone - things I didn't realize earlier even though I was reading this sub a lot.

E.g. I'm going to an event this weekend and the tickets are sold on an app, but there's no way to print them on paper. This must be a bit unusual. I usually don't buy tickets from this app, so I couldn't know this beforehand. And then coming back to work from my vacation I realized, that I do actually need MFA every now and then for work, so I'd still need to keep my iPhone on and connected to WiFi every day when I work.

How many of you have two phones: mainly using dumb phone but need to supplement it almost daily with your smartphone? Or would it make more sense to have a dumber smartphone like Dumber Mini?

First progressives/varifocals in my 30's

I'm getting "baby progressives" for hyperopia, prescription for both eyes is: +0.75 distance, ADD +1.00. No astigmatism. I got Zeiss lenses, which I believe should be very good

Do you think it's likely that I'll be able to use these glasses for working at a computer daily, or should I be prepared to get a separate pair for office use? It would mainly be for computer use (around 60cm distance). How about reading a book? Will I find progressives comfortable for reading, or are they mainly an "everyday pair" and for reading it would be more comfortable to get a pair of readers? Luckily, I have no astigmatism, so I could easily buy a pair of readers with the needed near power.

Optometrist said that this varies individually, and that I might be happy wearing these even at the computer, but I'm eager to hear about different experiences!

(Sidenote: I'm aware that my prescription is considered small and not many people would need progressives at this stage and age, but I do. I have a hyper strong accommodation that gives me a lot of eye strain and headaches, and the accommodation doesn't fully relax even with cycloplegic drops. The plan is to let my eyes slowly relax into my full Rx, which probably is even more than +1.75)

Semi-dumb phones and privacy

There seems to be a lot of semi dumb phones on the market. Light, Mudita, Sidephone, Dumber mini...

What's the data safety and privacy of these? Some of them offer Mail, wallet/NFC, banking etc. apps. Can I trust my data to these devices?

Another newbie thinking of making the switch

... to a dumb(er) phone

but I have a lot of doubts and questions, and I'd love to hear how people who have gone to a dumb phone see these?

For background, I'm currently using iPhone 15. I have dumbed it down to some extent, switched to black and white, and deleted social media apps.

I keep going left and right between choosing a dumber smartphone'ish such as Mudita Kompakt, Light III or Sidephone - or just going with a feature phone which is actually dumb. I find myself comparing these and looking for the 100% optimal solution, which is tiring me and keeping me from doing the switch.

Why I'm looking at these semi dumb phones? Besides basic texts and phone calls I'd prefer to have Maps, and preferably also an app for local public transport (Finland) BUT I think 90% of the time I actually could do without those two. It's only when I go someplace I haven't been to, when I'd need Maps or the public transport app. I could use my iPhone for Maps in the car when necessary, but for this it would be ideal to have a dumb phone with hotspot ability.

And it is an intriguing idea to just go raw and switch to an actual dumb phone. See how it goes.

At the same time I'm also thinking I'd need to keep my iPhone powered up in a drawer for situations like logging on to WhatsApp/Gmail/other accounts on my laptop (I have all my passwords on my iPhone), and surely for banking etc. If any of you have your smart phone in the drawer and occasionally use it when necessary, has it worked well for you? I also think I'd like to keep my iCloud for photos, and probably would need to bring my iPhone to special occasions to take photos? Unless I buy a phone such as Light...

Blurry vision only with glasses on…?

I often have blurry distance vision with my glasses on. When I take my glasses off, it’s crisp and sharp again, no blurriness

These are my first glasses, got them 6 weeks ago for hyperopia.

I’ve been told at Specsavers that it’s just my dry eyes that make this blurriness, and making it hard to adjust to my glasses, but I don’t think so because I don’t have any blurriness once I take my glasses off

This blurriness initially got better over the first 3 weeks I was using my glasses, but 2 weeks ago I started using steroid and Ikervis drops. And at the same time the blurriness has become an everyday every moment experience. More or less blurry in the distance all the time but only with glasses on. I suspect the steroid drops to be the reason and I’m going to stop using them.

Tacrolimus/Protopic and IPL

Hi, is there anyone else who is using tacrolimus ointment (such as Protopic) on their face/eyelids and has done IPL? What was the safety measure, did you need to stop using the ointment some days before and after IPL or how were you advised?

(Just thinking whether IPL will be a treatment option at all for me as I have atopic dermatitis and really need Protopic)

Reason for dry eyes is inflammation? Would IPL help?

I’ve had dry eyes for over 2 years now. First meeting with an eye doctor 1,5 years ago. She did some tests and only outlier was TBUT = 3. Amount of tears was normal, so it seems my dry eyes are caused by excessive evaporation. This doc didn’t say anything about Meibomian glands.

Second visit to another eye doctor this week. She didn’t perform all the same tests to estimate my tears or their quality, but said based on her inspection that it’s not about Meibomian glands - and so IPL won’t help. Is this true?

I didn’t get any diagnosis as to why I have dry eyes but we are treating this as inflammation.

I also have atopic dermatitis and it’s been flaring up over the past couple of years. First eye doc mentioned this could be the reason for my dry eyes. My skin doc said she doesn’t believe there’s a connection between dry eyes and my eczema but to me it would only be logical.

Eye doc prescribed Ikervis and some steroid drops to help before Ikervis starts to work, which can take 4-6 months.

Other than that I use Hylo Dual Intense and Hylo EvoTears

Any tips? Would IPL or LLLT or both combined help even if it’s not about my Meibomian glands?

Vision is blurry with glasses on in dim light

These are my first glasses and I’ve been wearing them all day every day for 2 weeks. I only have Rx +0.75 in both eyes, no astigmatism.

In dim lightning, such as walking outdoors right before it gets dark in the evening, my mid and far distance vision is very blurry with glasses on. Without glasses it’s normal. Will my eyes adjust eventually or what is this about? I’ve always scheduled a recheck with my optician for next week.

I just got my first ever glasses for hyperopia / farsightedness. I’m 33 and my prescription is +0.75 in both eyes and nothing else so pretty mild. But it did cause me daily headaches and major eye strain.

The optometrist said that hyperiopia affects also how your eyes accommodate to see far. She recommended wearing the glasses all the time. At the same time I understood from her feedback I had very good test results in seeing far.

Now I got the glasses and I get eye strain from my glasses especially from watching objects in distance like the TV. Is it really true I will get used to it? Should I wear the glasses now all day every day to get used to them?

(Going to the optometrist I told them I had great vision but my eyes get very strained. Lol now with the glasses I feel like the world up close is in HD, it’s great. It’s weird how you don’t really notice how your vision changes over time.)
