AITA for wanting to take the bus after someone drove to my house to go hang out?

I never ask because I know they'll either decline because they'll be in a rush to go off to whatever they have to do next or maybe say they don't feel comfortable on public transportation but I think that riding public transportation together is actual quality time as opposed to riding in a car to and from our destination. Like, we know how long it's going to take and we just fill the time with bullshit because we just want to BE there doing the thing we're doing but we're both kinda distracted by the act of being in a car. It feels awkward to me because I don't want to distract them from their or my driving but also I want to enjoy ALL our time together. Cars rob us of that IMO. I feel like on a bus or train we can fully lock in and actually interact with each other or just chill or whatever. I think it's just a waste of time driving to a destination that could be spent truly enjoying the trip AND the final goal.

Memoir 44 is a lot of fun if you like wargaming but also enjoy a bit of luck and maybe the fog of war being simulated in your games.

I like the *idea* of solo tabletop skirmish wargames but the reality of building terrain and coming up with scenarios usually takes all of my spoons and leaves me without the energy to actually play. I try too hard to build a story behind every skirmish. This board game scratches that itch really well. The scenarios are historic from WW1, meaning they actually happened, or at least started out the way the scenario starts. I like how a story unfolds and the action plays out quickly. The Command and Colors system makes a lot of sense and the choices presented are puzzling and cause tension, even in solo play.

I just finished the first scenario in the core box, "Pegasus Bridge", a historical scenario from just hours before d-day kicked off. I really enjoy the "play to find out" situation certain solo games present, like the baseball sim game "Deadball", for example. I enjoy just sitting back and playing both sides to the best of my abilities and letting the dice and some decisions unfold the fate of the game.

I play solo by playing one side with the normal amount of Command cards -1 (so in this case I played the Allies with 5 cards, they normally get 6) and for the Axis I just drew 2 cards on their turn and played the most advantageous card to their current board state. Then I discarded both Axis Command cards, and then I returned to the Ally's turn, drawing a card for every card played as you normally would. This way I don't know what's in the opponent's hand because they don't have one. In my first game the opponent actually won! It was very close, I had them nearly wiped out but they held the 2 bridges which kept me from gaining the medals (4 medals to win the scenario, holding a bridge is a temporary medal, wiping out an enemy unit is 1 medal). Well they killed 4 of my units and won the scenario. They were quite thinned out by the end but ultimately killed more of my guys than I did theirs.

The rules are both simple but have depth, and they make a lot of sense. There's Line of Sight, rules to Take Ground, the battles play out in a satisfying but quick way, and the terrain offers both Cover (Protection) and can stop your movement or not allow certain units to shoot from them. The core game only has 3 types of units: infantry, tanks, and artillery all with their own movement and firing rules but they are still quite simple. There's also rules for Elite units that upgrade them a bit and add to the fun. Other expansions give more units and Nationalities.

I will say that even though I bought the "Terrain" expansion pack I still didn't have the exact tiles I needed for all the rivers in the first scenario, so I just used a couple bent river shapes and put them under the Orne and "Pegasus" bridge tiles to hide them. They also have you use bent river tiles to proxy a lake on this map, but I had the terrain expansion so I found the lake tiles and was able to make a lake but they don't match up nicely and the lake looked kinda dumb, which was a bit annoying for me. Also I needed the expansion pack to have the two bridges match, otherwise one would have been a sort of dirt road looking bridge and the other would have been a metal framed one. It's quite annoying to buy a $60+ game and find out you don't get the appropriate pieces the scenario book calls for and even with the appropriate expansions you will find you STILL don't have enough. This is stated many times if you read the reviews of this game though. Many expansions are very expensive and then turn out to just be a deck of cards (Operation Overlord) with no maps or scenarios included. Just a map game board is like $25 and does come with a few scenarios but some scenarios call for 2 BASE BOX SETS like wtf. All in all I'm glad I bought it all, I think what I have in the picture cost like $150 all together, which is a lot of money don't get me wrong, but the map includes desert and winter warfare maps and the terrain expansion has a bunch for both environments IIRC and you can find special (free, fan made) scenarios on the Days of Wonder website to set up and play.

Anyways this is getting long-winded but if you're like me and love the idea of tabletop skirmish wargames or wargaming in general but don't have the bandwidth or means to go all in on terrain and tables and army's just to play by yourself but still want to play I highly suggest this game. I can very much see myself painting these very slowly and maybe even making some simple terrain hexes myself and definitely coming up with some house rules and whatnot, I know they have a Star Wars version of this called the Battle of Hoth or something like that and I feel like this will give me many many years of enjoyment. It also seems quite easy to learn so roping in someone else would be pretty easy if you know any WW2 or boardgame enthusiasts. I also tried Frosthaven but that game is more of a puzzle game than it is a wargame or skirmish game so I might just sell that one. It's a shame because it's a beautiful game it's just a big investment of both time and brain power. Anyways that's my 2 cents.

Suddenly had a powerful thirst for Hartzler's eggnog and found out they sell limited quantities at their flagship store in Wooster for Xmas in July.

Anybody else think eggnog is a fantastic summertime drink? I could slug down a half gallon right now, swear to God. Might have to make a double boiler and make my own 'nog today. Gonna have to go get some nutmeg though, which means I'll have to put on pants. Damn these cravings.

Average American pays $1k/mo for total cost of car ownership. That'll buy a lot of groceries. *But how will they get them home*😭

Ebikes are the best. It's like my little moped that is allowed on the sidewalks. Since it's a mid-drive, pedal assist model the range is like 60 miles so I charge it every 10 days or so. It only goes 20mph but the motor is bulletproof, apparently, and changing the tires is the same as a normal bike (unlike a hub motor bike). I like that I still get exercise on this because I could see myself getting lazy and giving in to temptation if I had a throttle like on other bikes. Not trying to virtue signal, just saying how I feel.

Used $1.52 worth of gas in June (somehow?), so of course my final gas bill is... $25!

I only lived here for half the month and never turned my heat on. It's the only way to use gas in that apartment so idk. New place is all electric so it's going to actually be more expensive. FML.

TIL that Ohio gave up their portion of the Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement (1998) and in 2007 sold (securitized) the future payments to Wall Street bondholders in exchange for roughly 5 billion dollars which they (we, taxpayers) are now paying the interest and principal on every year!

Every year Big Tobacco cuts a check for anywhere from $6 billion to $9 billion to the Federal government and then States are allocated their share according to their size. This money was intended to offset healthcare costs related to smoking. Instead the states collectively spend less than 3% of that money as intended and instead do whatever the hell they want with it instead. Some States literally give the money right back to the Tobacco companies!

>The $5 billion cash windfall from the 2007 securitization deal was completely stripped away from healthcare. The legislature spent the money on school building construction, higher education facilities, and expanding the state's Homestead Exemption property tax program. Residual funds left over after annual debt obligations are met flow into the state's General Revenue Fund (GRF) to balance the daily operating budget and back corporate job-creation incentives.

>Originally, Ohio was a model state for tobacco cessation. In 2000, the state created the Tobacco Use Prevention and Control Foundation (TUPCF), allocating a massive portion of early MSA funds to community health, youth mobilization, and a statewide quit line. Between 2002 and 2009, Ohio's adult smoking rate fell from 27.6% to 20.1%.

>However, during the 2008 economic recession, the Ohio Legislature faced a severe budget crisis. To plug the hole, lawmakers raided the TUPCF's remaining $230 million trust fund to use for general state spending. When the public health foundation legally fought back to protect the money, the state legislature responded by completely dissolving the foundation.

>Today, according to the Ohio Revised Code (Chapter 183), any loose, unpledged tobacco funds are split minimally between a generic public health fund administered by the Director of Health and the Biomedical Research and Technology Transfer Trust Fund (managed by the Ohio Third Frontier Commission).

>To prevent future state budget raids, Ohio set up the OneOhio Recovery Foundation—a private, independent nonprofit. Legally, 55% of the state's opioid settlement money bypasses the legislature entirely and goes straight to this foundation, ensuring the funds are strictly locked down for addiction prevention and treatment rather than filling potholes or balancing budgets.

But there's some "good" news (?):

>Declining Smoking Rates: The revenue backing these bonds relies entirely on Americans buying cigarettes. U.S. smoking rates have sharply declined for decades. If cigarette sales drop faster than expected, the tobacco companies pay less money, leaving less cash to pay the bondholders.

>Bankruptcy Risk: If major tobacco giants (like Altria or Reynolds American) face severe legal crises or go bankrupt, the Master Settlement Agreement payments could dry up completely.

>By accepting a high interest rate, investors took the long-term risk completely off Ohio's hands. If cigarette sales collapse entirely tomorrow, state taxpayers are not legally responsible for paying back the remaining multi-billion-dollar bond debt. The Wall Street investors are the ones who will take the financial loss. Therefore, the high interest Ohio pays is essentially the "insurance premium" the state accepted to get its cash guaranteed upfront. The issue compounded over time.

>Because smoking declined sharply and tobacco companies engaged in legal payment disputes, Ohio's original 2007 bonds began facing severe financial strain. In 2020, Ohio had to issue a massive $5.3 billion restructuring bond package just to refinance the old 2007 debt. While this lowered some rates, it locked in new interest payment schedules extending out to 2055.

This is all stuff I learned by Googling "what were the price of cigarettes in 1998 in Ohio" and it took me down a rabbit hole

If anyone has any more insights into this I would love any information you have.

Sorry for the wall of text I just thought it was extremely interesting and worth sharing even if only a few people read this crap I copy/pasted.

Anyone know where I can donate 4 vials of pet insulin? My cat went into remission and I have 4 unopened pens that I got from the pharmacy for basically nothing. The APL doesn't accept meds.

Also, God bless the pharmacist who worked his magic and got the price reduced. Would have cost a fortune but he helped me out. Made me cry, a grown cat dad. I'm not used to such kindness, usually I'm the one trying to help. He probably saw how worried I was and then my cat went into remission a few days later like a dick. I'm keeping one pen that I opened in case his diabetes comes back.

I still have some hair left I'd like to tear out in frustration. Maybe one that has alarms that are even more absurdly difficult to turn off? One with only one or even no buttons? Damn this piece of shit device and whoever designed it.
